I take my phone with me wherever I go, and I'm not afraid to admit that I have come to rely on it for just about every aspect of my life -- from getting news, weather and navigation help to staying in close contact with friends, family and coworkers. They're bulky. They require a cable. They charge wirelessly but don't include a magnet to keep the phone in place so it's hard to maintain that connection. There's always something. The Anker 622 is half an inch thick and snaps onto the back of my iPhone using the MagSafe-aligned magnets. I don't have to turn it on to start charging -- power flows as soon as the connection is made. Now, this isn't the highest-capacity (5,000 mAh) or fastest portable charger. That's fine. Honestly, it doesn't look like it should work well: It's a fabric-covered set of plastic pieces that lie flush against the case, folds in two places and attaches to the back of the unit with a magnetic strip when extended. That means you can replenish it while the stand is open -- many chargers' ports are stuck on the bottom. Having the USB-C port on the side keeps it accessible even when in its stand configuration. Jeff Carlson/CNET How the Anker 622 MagGo compares to similar power banks Before getting the Anker 622 MagGo, I carried an Anker PowerCore III 10K Wireless, which doubles the battery capacity, includes a USB-A port and charges wirelessly but without magnets to hold the phone in place. That meant if I didn't use a cable, the phone and charger needed to be stable and level; too often I'd find the iPhone slid off its wireless perch and not charged. It's also larger and heavier. I still use it, but it's the power bank that goes into my carry-on suitcase as a backup charger. The Anker 622 MagGo is much smaller and lighter than my old reliable Anker PowerCore III 10K Wireless, which is now a solid backup. The $55 Anker 633 (currently on sale for $45) packs 10,000 mAh into a slightly thicker brick, includes a USB-A port in addition to USB-C and has a metal kickstand for resting the phone upright. Its main appeals are faster 15-watt magnetic charging and Qi2 compatibility, plus a small display on the side that reports the battery capacity and an estimate of the remaining battery in hours. My Favorite Laptop for Travel Just Hit a New All-Time Low Price
Back in January at CES 2025, I knew the moment I saw the Asus Zenbook A14 that it would be my new favorite travel laptop. It boasts an incredible 32 hours (!) of battery life, a Snapdragon X Plus chipset, 16GB of RAM, 512GB of storage and an OLED display. It's also one of the lightest 14-inch laptops you can buy, weighing even less than Apple's MacBook Air. With all of that going for it, it's no wonder the Zenbook A14 ended up winning a CNET Editors' Choice Award and a Best of CES Award for best laptop. The single biggest downside at that time was the price. But I just spotted the Arm-powered laptop on sale at Best Buy for $250 off, bringing it down to a new all-time low price. My favorite version of this laptop, in the Zabriskie beige color, is now available for a discount of $250. As a result, the $1,000 laptop is going for just $750, no special codes needed. The first time the Asus Zenbook A14 went on sale was for Memorial Day, and even then it only saw a $200 discount. If you've been looking for a lightweight, midrange laptop, this sale is your chance to score one you'll love at its best price to date. Why I recommend the Asus Zenbook A14 Prakhar Khanna/ZDNET The Asus Zenbook A14 is one of the best laptops you can buy right now and there are three reasons it's become my go-to device. First, it offers a long battery life, and by long, I mean you can extend it up to two days without needing a charger. I can carry it in my travel backpack without worrying about the availability of a power outlet. In fact, the Snapdragon X variant is only the second laptop CNET has reviewed with a battery life of more than 24 hours, with the HP OmniBook X 14 lasting an hour longer. That brings me to the second reason I like using the Asus Zenbook A14: its OLED screen. The HP laptop lasted longer during CNET's test thanks to an LCD display, but the Zenbook doesn't compromise on its screen to deliver a stellar battery life. Hey, did you know? It might not be as sharp as the 2.8K OLED screen on the Asus Zenbook S 14, but you won't find another laptop with this combo of 24-hour+ battery life and OLED display in this price range. I appreciate the OLED screen for its excellent contrast and deep black levels. In CNET's tests with a Spyder X colorimeter, it showed 100% coverage of the sRGB and P3 spaces and 97% of AdobeRGB. My only slight annoyance is the thick bezels, which make it a little less immersive than other Asus laptops. Third, the Asus Zenbook A14 is surprisingly lightweight. At just 2.4 pounds, it's the lightest Arm laptop you can buy. And Asus hasn't traded build quality for the lightweight form factor. Its Ceraluminum build is both rigid and lightweight, keeping the weight in check without making the laptop feel cheap or flimsy. Plus, it's scratch, smudge and fingerprint resistant. Things to keep in mind before you buy the Asus Zenbook A14 Prakhar Khanna/CNET Asus Zenbook A14's keyboard offers a satisfactory experience and the trackpad is reliable. The A14's Snapdragon X Plus variant (on sale) is more powerful than the Snapdragon X model, but it isn't built for power-intensive tasks. If you want to use power-hungry video editing tools, this laptop is not for you. The M4 MacBook Air might better serve you for this use. This Asus Zenbook A14 is for those who are always on the go and want an extra-long battery life without compromising on screen quality. It's a great laptop, particularly at this price -- and especially if you're looking for an ultralight, ultralong-running laptop for travel. Starlink Doubled Its Speed In Two Years. It Still Doesn't Meet the FCC's Minimum
Starlink is nearly twice as fast as it was two years ago, according to a new report from the speed test site Ookla. (Disclosure: Ookla is owned by the same parent company as CNET, Ziff Davis.) Median download speeds from the satellite internet provider have steadily ticked up over the past few years, going from 53.95 megabits per second in 2022 to 104.71Mbps today. That's an impressive feat considering Starlink added about 5 million customers over the same period and recently passed the 6 million mark globally. Ookla 'With Starlink's substantial increase to its median upload and download speeds and ability to deliver broadband speeds of 100/20 Mbps to nearly 20% of Speedtest users across the country, the satellite provider is becoming an increasingly attractive broadband option for many,' wrote Ookla's editorial director, Sue Marek. Starlink accomplished that by drastically increasing its capacity. At the beginning of 2022, the company had about 1,761 satellites in orbit; today, that number stands at 7,607, according to Jonathan McDowell, an astronomer who maintains a catalog of space objects. SpaceX, the company that owns Starlink, has said it eventually hopes to have as many as 42,000 satellites in space. It's going to need them. Recent changes to the Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) Program could funnel as much as $20 billion in government subsidies to Starlink for providing internet in rural areas. But many industry experts are skeptical that Starlink can add millions of new customers without sacrificing speed. Locating local internet providers That's a reasonable concern. Ookla's data shows that only 17.4% of Starlink customers are currently getting internet speeds that meet the FCC's definition of minimum broadband speeds: 100Mbps download and 20Mbps upload. That's also a requirement to receive BEAD money. While most subscribers are meeting the 100Mbps download speed threshold, Starlink's median upload speeds are just 14.84Mbps. Latency, or the time it takes data to get from your computer to where it's going, is also on the high side -- 45 milliseconds (ms) compared to 12ms for the country as a whole. CNET recommends around 50ms or lower for activities like online gaming. In Oct. 2024, Maine began offering free Starlink dishes to residents in its 'hardest-to-reach locations.' I asked Brian Allenby, the senior director with the Maine Connectivity Authority, if he was concerned about Starlink hitting that 100/20Mbps benchmark in a previous interview. "We have a very granular level of reporting through the Starlink portal, and it has all been compliant," Allenby said. "So we don't have immediate concerns about that." A representative for Starlink did not immediately respond to a request for comment. States that qualify for a free Starlink dish had higher speeds The Starlink experience can vary dramatically depending on where you live. Last week, the company instituted a "demand fee" of $500 in the Pacific Northwest to combat congestion in high-use areas. In other states with more capacity available, it's giving customers the $349 satellite dish for free. Ookla took a look at the areas where Starlink is offering free equipment and found that all of them, except West Texas and Alaska, had median download speeds over 100Mbps. South Dakota, Rhode Island and Wyoming had the highest percentage of customers meeting the 100/20Mbps benchmark, while Alaska, Mississippi and Louisiana had the lowest.
