As the holy month of Ramazan nears, Islamabad and Rawalpindi are bustling with preparations. Markets, mosques, and community centres are witnessing increased activity as residents stock up on essentials for the 30-day fasting period.
Shopping centers in Islamabad are experiencing a surge in customers, with discounts and promotions on Ramazan-related items. In Rawalpindi, popular markets like Raja Bazaar, Moti Bazaar, and Saddar are packed with people purchasing dates, fruits, and other necessities for sehri and iftar.
The city administrations have also geared up to ensure smooth supply of essential commodities. The district administrations have set up price control committees to monitor prices of essential items. Meanwhile, mosques and community centers are being decorated and renovated to accommodate the large number of worshippers during Taraweeh prayers.
A resident of Islamabad, Maria Khan, while expressing her eagerness for Ramazan said residents are gearing up to welcome Ramazan with renewed faith, devotion, and a sense of community. "The city is taking on a festive look, and the excitement is palpable, and I am looking forward to spending quality time with my family and friends during iftar and Taraweeh prayers."
Another resident Qadir Rehman said "I have been shopping for new clothes and accessories for Ramazan and the markets are offering great deals. I am excited to try out some new recipes this Ramazan."

Meta in talks over potential $10b investment in AI firm Scale AI, says Bloomberg

Scale AI also provides a platform for researchers to exchange AI-related information, with contributors in more than 9,000 cities and towns. PHOTO: SCALE AI WEBSITE Meta Platforms is in talks to make an investment that could exceed $10 billion in artificial intelligence startup Scale AI, Bloomberg News reported on Sunday. The terms of the deal were not yet finalized and could still change, the report said, citing people familiar with the matter. Scale AI declined to comment and Meta did not immediately respond to Reuters request for comment outside regular business hours. Founded in 2016, Scale AI is a data labeling startup backed by tech giants Nvidia , Amazon and Meta. Last valued at nearly $14 billion, Scale AI also provides a platform for researchers to exchange AI-related information, with contributors in more than 9,000 cities and towns. According to the Wall Street Journal, which cited anonymous sources, Meta wants to provide a tool that 'enables brands to fully create and target ads using artificial intelligence by the end of next year.'. Businesses only need to submit a budget and a picture of their product, with Meta's AI advertising handling the rest. Meta's chief, Mark Zuckerberg, has previously hinted at this plan. Zuckerberg, in a conference call last August, stated, 'Over the long-term, advertisers will just be able to tell us a business objective and a budget and we're going to do the rest for them.'

Eidul Azha sees artificial price hike in Karachi as tomatoes, essentials soar

Market analysts caution that IMF-related measures in the upcoming FY2026 budget—particularly new taxes and adjustments in energy prices—may lead to a renewed spike in inflation. PHOTO: FILE Listen to article The customary artificial surge in prices of vegetables and condiments ahead of Eidul Azha continues unabated this year, with rates of essential kitchen items increasing by up to 200 per cent in Karachi markets, Express News reported. According to a report, the price of tomatoes has jumped from Rs60 per kilogram to as high as Rs160 per kilogram, marking an increase of over 160 per cent within a week. The cost of garlic, which was retailing at Rs500 per kg, has surged to Rs700 per kg, while ginger now sells at Rs800 per kg, up from Rs600. Fresh coriander, typically priced at Rs20 per bunch, is now being sold at Rs40, and green chillies have risen from Rs380 to Rs450 per kg. In Karachi, the price of lemons has surged from Rs250 to between Rs350 and Rs400 per kilogram. Raw papaya, commonly used to tenderise meat during Eid preparations, is now retailing for up to Rs200 per kilogram. Despite repeated complaints, there appears to be little regulatory oversight to curb these arbitrary price hikes as citizens have called on the city administration to intervene and enforce official price lists, warning that such unchecked inflation burdens lower-income households during the festive period.

US imposes new sanctions on Iran, targeting 10 individuals and 27 entities

Listen to article The US has issued a new round of Iran-related sanctions targeting 10 individuals and 27 entities, including at least two companies it said were linked to Iran's national tanker company, the US Treasury Department said on Friday. The sanctions, which target Iranian nationals and some entities in the United Arab Emirates and Hong Kong, were announced as US President Donald Trump's administration is working to get a new nuclear deal with Tehran. Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control added Ace Petrochem FZE, and Moderate General Trading LLC, both registered in the UAE, to its Specially Designated Nationals List, freezing any of their US assets. OFAC said they are both linked to the state-owned National Iranian Tanker Company which is under US sanctions for exporting oil. Talks between Iran and the US that aim to resolve a decades-long dispute over Tehran's nuclear ambitions have been stuck over disagreements about uranium enrichment. Iran's mission to the United Nations in New York did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
