Ancestral sacrifice held in Chinese Yan Emperor's hometown Suizhou
SUIZHOU, China, May 23, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- A grand ancestral worship festival in the hometown of Chinese Yan Emperor was held in Suizhou, central China's Hubei Province, on May 23.
A Media Snippet accompanying this announcement is available in this link.
This year's festival, highlighted by sophisticated ritual music, seeks to create a national-level sacrificial ceremony rooted in cultural traditions and showcasing the spirit of the times.
On the morning of May 23, the Lieshan Ancestral Worship Square was filled with the rumble of drums and the melodious chimes of bells. Worship guests formed neat lines and, guided by the ceremonial procession, the grand ceremony to pay homage to Yan Emperor Shennong began in a solemn atmosphere.
The lunar April 26 of each year marks the birthday of Yan Emperor Shennong. This year, Suizhou launched an online co-sacrifice initiative, innovatively using digital technologies such as AI interaction with Yan Emperor and virtual candle-lighting and flower-offering, which allows Chinese descendants at home and abroad to participate in the ceremony in real time and offer blessings online.
The festival, organized by the People's Government of Suizhou City, was inaugurated in 2009 and the Suizhou Shennong sacrificial ceremony was listed as a national intangible cultural heritage in 2011. It has become a landmark cultural event demonstrating the long-standing Chinese civilization, a spiritual symbol highlighting the unyielding spirit of the Chinese nation, and a bridge uniting Chinese worldwide.
The festival was co-hosted by the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles, the All-China Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese, the Association for Yan Huang Culture of China, and the People's Government of Hubei Province.
Exchange and cooperation platforms themed around special-purpose vehicles, emergency response, cultural communication and cultural and tourism promotion were also organized during the event, with an aim to boost the introduction of investment projects and promote characteristic products and services to the world.

Edmund White, Author of 'A Boy's Own Story' and 'The Joy of Gay Sex', Dies at 85
Writer Edmund White has died at age 85 The author was widely regarded as a pioneering figure of LGBTQ+ literature, and published over 30 books throughout his career Some of White's most notable works included the semi-autobiographical novel A Boy's Own Story and the nonfiction book The Joy of Gay SexEdmund White, the pioneering author who documented the gay experience through acclaimed works of fiction and nonfiction, has died. He was writer's death on June 3 was confirmed by his husband, Michael Carroll, and agent Bill Clegg, The New York Times, The Guardian and NBC News report. White collapsed while waiting for an ambulance after experiencing stomach illness symptoms, though an official cause of death has not yet been released. White was born on Jan. 13, 1940 in Cincinnati. His parents divorced when he was a child, and White moved around the country with his mother, Delilah, and sister, Margaret. White came out to his mother when he was a teenager, and was sent to a psychiatrist. "As a young teenager I looked desperately for things to read that might excite me or assure me I wasn't the only one, that might confirm my identity I was unhappily piecing together," the author wrote in his 1991 essay 'Out of the Closet, On to the Bookshelf.' Though he was accepted to Harvard for college, White decided to attend the University of Michigan, in order to stay closer to his therapist. He majored in Chinese before he moved to New York in 1962, where he worked at Time-Life Books. White became immersed in the city's LGBTQ+ scene, and recounted seeing the Stonewall leaving the city to live in Rome and work as an editor for The Saturday Review in San Francisco, White returned to New York in 1973. 'I was writing all the time and I was considered a good journalist but I had no idea if I could write a novel,' White told The Paris Review in 1988. 'Part of my problem as a young writer was that I was too much a New Yorker, always second-guessing the 'market.' I became so discouraged that I decided to write something that would please me alone — that became my sole criterion.' White published his debut novel, Forgetting Elena, in 1973. Over the course of his career, White wrote more than 30 books. One of his most notable works was the 1982 semi-autobiographical novel A Boy's Own Story, now seen as a cornerstone of LGBTQ+ literature. The novel was also the first in trilogy, later followed by The Beautiful Room is Empty (1988) and The Farewell Symphony (1997).White's nonfiction also included the 1977 book The Joy of Gay Sex, which he cowrote with his therapist Charles Silverstein. Inspired by Alex Comfort's The Joy of Sex, White's book served as both a manual and a narrative about life in the gay community. His other nonfiction books included States of Desire: Travels in Gay America (1980), City Boy: My Life in New York During the 1960s and '70s (2009) and The Loves of My Life: A Sex Memoir, published in January 2025. White also authored several biographies of notable French writers, including Arthur Rimbaud, Marcel Proust and Jean Genet (Genet: A Biography was a finalist for the 1994 Pulitzer Prize). The author also documented his time living in France in the 2014 memoir Inside a Pearl: My Years in taught creative writing at Brown University and Princeton University. In 2019, he received the National Book Foundation's Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters.'It's never a day job; it's always a tremendous challenge,' White said of his work in a 2012 interview with the Los Angeles Review of Books. 'People always ask me, 'Do you ever start a book and then put it aside and do something different?' And, unfortunately, no, I always write everything right to the bitter end." Moody Soju Cocktails and Dim Sum Reign at Oakland's Neon-Lit Mahjong Den
Just as mahjong reaches new TikTok-fueled heights, an Oakland bar and restaurant swoops in to make good on the legendary pastime. The new 13 Orphans opened Friday, May 30, in downtown Oakland, just upstairs from Baba's House. Jenn Lui, Alan Chen, and Eman Garcia own the entire building now, including the first-floor restaurant space and this second-story newcomer. The Asian American-centered mahjong clubhouse provides tea-infused cocktails — and 'tea-tails' (alcohol optional) — with Filipino and Chinese dim sum-inspired bites and bookable tables for laying down tiles through the late night. At 13 Orphans, Lui handles the drinks while Garcia runs the kitchen. Lui found inspiration in the five elements of traditional Chinese culture; to honor the earth, a 2014 Shu pu'erh tea mingles with lapsang souchong tepache, cinnamon, beetroot juice, black sugar, and pear-infused soju for the Pu'er Petrichor. The watermelon tonic, nodding towards metal, blends a Gongmei white tea with goji-infused soju and pei pa lo, a Chinese herbal cough suppressant. Lui worked with Hatching Dragon and Teaphile, a source and an importer of Chinese teas to the Bay Area. Garcia walked through a variety of inspirations for the small bites-focused menu. The Chinoy siu mai is a pork belly, prawn, water chestnut, and smoked trout roe play on the classic dim sum dish popular for Chinese and Filipino diners alike. Plates are just a few bites-worth, sort of the opposite size and scope of the kamayan meals he's prepared with his friends and family for Baba's House events since its debut over three years ago. The first floor, previously BHK, is now exclusively Baba's House. The food and drink menus for that project are still forthcoming. Getting a table at 13 Orphans aims to be difficult: Groups book a game table for just 45 minutes. There are just 16 seats at the reservation-only space. The name 13 Orphans is a nod to an obscure hand to draw in mahjong, a game Lui points out is essentially gambling. Throughout the years at Baba's House, mahjong nights were booked out over and over. The comedy nights and live music were well-attended, too, sure. But mahjong just kept doing numbers. They've hosted free classes for more than three years now. Lui, at least, says she feels the game is reaching a fever pitch due to a generational passing of the torch through immigrant communities to the digital natives, the same that are eschewing binge drinking and clubbing more than their predecessors. 'Once we took over the restaurant, we were trying to identify who we are,' Lui says. 'The personality forming within our community.' Baba's House itself sprang from Lui's mind. The hope was to honor her dad, who died in 2020, and Chen and Garcia joined her on her quest to build community and feed their friends. Chen points out that all three co-owners claim Chinese ancestry, though only Lui is fully Cantonese (Chen is half-Taiwanese, and Garcia is Filipino, as well). Now, this project is meant to give the three founders a chance to move their intentions into an even more specific, upscale project. 'With Baba's House, we did what we thought was going to make our community happy and grow our community,' Garcia says. 'Now with 13 Orphans, we can be intentional and deliberate about what we want to do, and we've built up a community that trusts us [to do that].' 13 Orphans (410 15th Street, Oakland) is available for reservation and open 6 to 10 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.
