Deputy commissioner of Uttara Kannada urges for peaceful Bakrid celebrations
Karwar: Deputy commissioner of Uttara Kannada, K Lakshmipriya, urged leaders of all communities to celebrate the Bakrid festival, a symbol of sacrifice, peacefully and harmoniously in the district.

She spoke on Thursday while presiding over a district-level harmony meeting organised by the district administration and police department, at the district police office auditorium, in view of the Bakrid festival.
The DC instructed that the festival be celebrated in a traditional manner without disturbing law and order or hurting religious sentiments. She assured that the district administration will take precautionary measures for this purpose.
She also directed the officials of the urban development department to prioritise waste disposal during Bakrid, and to manage it systematically. Additionally, officials from the animal husbandry and revenue departments were instructed to provide all necessary support to the police department.
To prevent illegal cattle transportation, 24 checkposts have been set up by the police department, and offenders involved in such activities can face up to 7 years of imprisonment and a fine of up to Rs 10 lakh.
The DC advised public not to believe any fake news on social media that could incite religious sentiments, and encouraged them to contact the district administration and police control rooms for accurate information.
She urged people of all faiths to engage in peaceful and harmonious celebrations of Bakrid.
District police superintendent Narayan M mentioned that peace meetings have been conducted in all police station jurisdictions to maintain peace and harmony during Bakrid.

CCTV installations and appropriate security arrangements have been made at prayer venues across the district, and selected locations have also been equipped with CCTVs. Social media platforms are being monitored 24/7 to prevent the spread of fake news.
A heightened police presence has been arranged for four days during Bakrid. He warned against inflammatory speeches and urged the public to immediately inform the nearest police station of any law violations, assuring strict action against offenders.
Leaders of Hindu and Muslim organisations present at the meeting emphasised that the district is known for its peace, and will not allow any untoward incidents during Bakrid. They committed to celebrating the festival peacefully and harmoniously, and assured continuous support to the district administration for maintaining a peaceful environment.

The Gujarat Police on Saturday booked the accountant of a five-star hotel located near the Statue of Unity in Ekta Nagar in Narmada district for allegedly embezzling Rs 51.34 lakh. According to the manager of the Ramada hotel, the accused, Ravikiran Tiwari, allegedly diverted funds into his accounts instead of depositing them in the account of the hotel, following the collection of cash during the contentious financial years. The First Information Report stated that the accused had informed the complainant, Manojkumar Maharaj, the manager of two properties of Ramada chain of hotels in Ekta Nagar, that Rs 51.34 lakh were not reflected in the balance sheets of the hotels for the year 2023-24 as the 'online tag' was pending and would be done shortly. However, the complainant approached the police when the amount was not reflected in the accounts or the balance sheets of the following year, 2024-25. The FIR states, 'During the audit of the balance sheet of the year 2023-24, it came to light that the annual turnover for the financial year was reported as Rs 2.17 crore. However, there was a discrepancy of an amount of Rs 46.74 lakh at Ramada and Rs 4.6 lakh at Hotel Comfort. When we questioned Tiwari, he said that the amount did not reflect due to a pending online tag and would show up in the total soon. However, on May 22, when the balance sheet of the following year (2024-25) was audited, the amount from the previous year did not reflect…' The FIR further states that when the complainant tried to seek an explanation from Tiwari, he refused to take responsibility, allegedly stating that he had already quit the post of accountant. The complainant has said that on checking the accounts registers, it was found that Tiwari had allegedly signed to show that the money had been transferred but the amount was 'never deposited in the bank accounts of the two hotels'. The Kevadia police have booked Tiwari under Indian Penal Code Sections for criminal breach of trust.

UP: Eid-ul-Azha celebrated amid tight security
Lucknow, Eid-ul-Azha was celebrated across the state on Saturday with people offering namaaz amidst tight security. In the state capital, namaaz was offered at the Lucknow Eidgah under the Shahi Imam of Lucknow, Maulana Khalid Rasheed Farangi Mahali. After offering namaaz, prayers were made for the safety of the jawans posted at the borders and safeguarding the country. In a video message, Maulana Khalid Rasheed Farangi Mahali, on Saturday, reminded the Muslim community to follow the advisory issued by the Islamic Centre of India and sacrifice only those animals on which there are no bans, adding that sacrifice should take place at the designated spots." "The blood of the sacrificed animal should not be released in drains, and the waste should be disposed of as per the arrangements made by the Municipal Corporation. After offering namaaz, one should pray for the development and safety of the nation and also for the Army jawans safeguarding our borders," he said. UP's Director General of Police Rajeev Krishna on Thursday issued directives ensuring the peaceful and safe observance of the festival across the state. The police implemented a multi-pronged strategy, focusing on preventive measures, community engagement and heightened vigilance, with police stations thoroughly reviewing their festival registers to prevent the initiation of any new traditions. Meetings were held with religious leaders, peace committees, civil defence personnel and prominent citizens, in coordination with local magistrates and other relevant departments, to foster coordination and dialogue. Permission for any new traditions related to sacrifice was denied, while a strict ban on the sacrifice of prohibited animals was enforced. Furthermore, coordination was established with municipal corporations and other departments for the proper disposal of remains after sacrifice. The police catalogued all Eid-ul-Azha events and hotspots. Additional police, PAC , and Home Guard forces were strategically deployed under gazetted officers within zones or sectors. Similarly, in Sambhal and Bareilly, the Eid-ul-Azha namaaz was held peacefully amid heavy police deployment. "We had a peace committee meeting for Eid-ul-Azha. Everyone agreed to not sacrifice in public places. We have set up a three-tier security system and we spoke to maulanas, muftis, and representatives of mosques. There was an agreement to not sacrifice animals at public places and 19 designated places were agreed upon for sacrifice," Sambhal District Magistrate Rajender Pensiya told reporters at the Eidgah. In Amethi, prayers were conducted at 367 mosques and Eidgahs, with different timings established to ensure peaceful observance. Superintendent of Police Aparna Rajat Kaushik assured that people were celebrating the festival with great joy while maintaining peace.

Gujarat Information Commission demands end to CID's RTI exemption in cyber fraud cases
AHMEDABAD: In a game-changing decision, the Gujarat State Information Commission has slammed the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) (Crime) for hiding behind a 19-year-old RTI exemption to deny critical information to cyber fraud victims. The Commission has now recommended the state government revoke the special immunity granted to CID Crime regarding cyber fraud cases—delivering a major win for transparency and the rights of hundreds of duped citizens. The exemption, in effect since October 25, 2005, under a Home Department notification, placed CID Crime beyond the purview of the Right to Information Act for crime-related investigations. However, the recent judgment has pierced this shield in the context of cybercrime, which the Commission argued is no longer a conventional 'sensitive crime' but a rapidly escalating public menace impacting citizens daily. The ruling stemmed from a plea by Rakesh Kumar Prajapati, a Gandhinagar resident who lost Rs 4.5 lakh to cyber fraud. After filing a complaint with the Cyber Crime Cell, Prajapati sought the FIR copy and related documents under the RTI Act. CID Crime rejected his request, citing the 2005 exemption. Unwilling to accept silence in the face of theft, Prajapati took the matter to the State Information Commission.
