China's Baidu looks to patent AI system to decipher animal sounds

Reuters08-05-2025

BEIJING, May 8 (Reuters) - Ever wished you could understand what your cat is trying to tell you? A Chinese tech company is exploring whether it's possible to translate those mysterious meows into human language using artificial intelligence.
Baidu (9888.HK), opens new tab, owner of China's largest search engine, has filed a patent with China National Intellectual Property Administration proposing a system to convert animal vocalisations into human language, according to a patent document published this week.
Scientists have long attempted to decode animal communication, and Baidu's patent represents the latest effort to leverage AI to do so.
The document says the system will collect animal data, including vocal sounds, behavioural patterns, and physiological signals, which will be preprocessed and merged before an AI-powered analysis designed to recognise the animal's emotional state.
The emotional states would then be mapped to semantic meanings and translated into human language.
The system could allow "deeper emotional communication and understanding between animals and humans, improving the accuracy and efficiency of cross-species communication," Baidu said in the patent document.
"There has been a lot of interest in the filing of our patent application," a Baidu spokesperson said when asked how soon the company could turn the patent into a product. "Currently, it is still in the research phase."
Baidu was among the first major Chinese companies to invest heavily in AI following the 2022 debut of OpenAI's ChatGPT.
It unveiled its latest AI model, Ernie 4.5 Turbo, last month, saying it matched the industry's best in several benchmark tests. However, the Ernie chatbot has struggled to gain traction amid fierce competition.
A number of efforts are underway outside China to try and interpret what animals want to convey.
International researchers at Project CETI (Cetacean Translation Initiative) have been using statistical analysis and AI since 2020 to understand how sperm whales communicate, while the Earth Species Project, a non-profit founded in 2017 whose backers include LinkedIn's Reid Hoffman, is also trying to use AI to decode animal communication.
Local media reports about Baidu's patent application sparked discussion on Chinese social media platforms late on Wednesday.
While some were excited about the possibility of eventually being better able to understand their pets, others were sceptical.
"While it sounds impressive, we'll need to see how it performs in real-world applications," commented a user on Weibo.

Oil falls as investors weigh chance of US intervention in Iran-Israel conflict

BEIJING, June 19 (Reuters) - Oil prices slipped on Thursday as investors hesitated to take new positions after U.S. President Donald Trump gave mixed signals on the country's potential involvement in the ongoing Israel-Iran conflict. Brent crude futures fell 37 cents, or 0.48%, to $76.33 a barrel by 0110 GMT after gaining 0.3% in the previous session marked by high volatility, with prices falling as much as 2.7%. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude for July fell 28 cents, or 0.37% to $74.86 a barrel, after settling up 0.4% in the previous despite dropping by as much as 2.4%. The July contract expires on Friday and the more active August contract was down 21 cents, or 0.29%, to $73.29 a barrel. There is still a "healthy risk premium baked into the price as traders await to see whether the next stage of the Israel-Iran conflict is a U.S. strike or peace talks", Tony Sycamore, market analyst at IG, said in a note. The former could lead prices to rise by $5 while peace talks could lead to a drop of around the same magnitude, Sycamore said. Trump on Wednesday told reporters that he may or may not decide for the U.S. to join Israel in its missile attacks on Iran. The conflict stretched into its seventh day on Thursday. Direct U.S. involvement would widen the conflict, putting energy infrastructure in the region at higher risk of attack, analysts say. Iran is OPEC's third-largest producer, extracting about 3.3 million barrels per day (bpd) of crude oil. But more crucially, about 19 million bpd of oil and oil products move through the key Strait of Hormuz waterway and there is widespread concern the fighting could disrupt trade flows there. The U.S. Federal Reserve kept interest rates steady on Wednesday but pencilled in two rate cuts by the end of the year. Chair Jerome Powell however cautioned the rate cuts would be "data-dependent" and that more consumer inflation is expected from President Trump's planned import tariffs. Lower interest rates would stimulate the economy, and as a result demand for oil, but that could exacerbate inflation.

Delta unveils historic route flying to new country for the first time

Delta has launched the first-ever nonstop flight route connecting Utah to Asia, with a new service between Salt Lake City and Seoul. The inaugural flight departed Salt Lake City International Airport on June 12 It was met with fanfare at gate A25 — including live music, food, and remarks from Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall. Seoul, the capital of South Korea, is a popular tourist destination known for its vibrant culinary scene and being the host of the 1998 summer Olympics. 'This is a monumental step forward... my invitation to Salt Lakers is to start looking out for more visitors from Asia and welcome them with open arms here in the state of Utah,' Mendenhall said. The aircraft was designed to celebrate the Delta's 100th anniversary and included lie-flat seating, bedding, and four-course meals. It is an Airbus A350-900, which can seat up to 306 passengers not including flight staff. Direct trips to Seoul-Incheon International Airport take nearly 13 hours to complete, and over 11 hours to return to Utah. Delta announced its plans to create the nonstop route last year while its wealthiest fliers were beginning to switch airlines. 'As Salt Lake City continues to grow as a vital Delta hub, our strong joint venture with Korean Air allows us to offer unmatched connectivity between the U.S. and Asia, leveraging strong hubs on both sides,' said Delta's senior vice president of network planning Joe Esposito. 'This ensures that customers, including those in the interior U.S., have access not just to Seoul but to key destinations across Asia.' Each flight to Korea from Salt Lake City features Korean snacks and flight attendants and is expected to have free Wi-Fi available by 2026. 'With the service we already have, and the addition of this flight, 80% of the world's population is now within one stop of Salt Lake City, Utah. It's a pretty amazing thing to just absorb what that means,' said SLC's executive director Bill Wyatt. Other officials also believe this is more than just a historic route and is also a way to better the relationships of these countries with Delta. 'It's a bridge between two places with natural beauty, innovation and growing friendship,' said counsel general of the Republic of Korea Jung-taek Lim. '[The] Korean Consulate is fully committed to supporting this journey, whether it's helping travelers enjoy a safe and enriching state or promoting lasting partnership between Korea and Utah.' The party was held at gate A25, and included food, music, and an appearance from Delta's mascot Besides the iconic flight route, Delta has been busy working on modernizing its aircrafts. The Atlanta-based carrier was met with backlash last year after giving a preview of its new cabin design. The design plan went off without a hitch, and the first revamped aircraft took off on February 1. Delta also made headlines when it released photos of an upcoming futuristic and environmentally friendly aircraft. The new carrier is part of Delta's multi-prolonged approach to have net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. If all goes according to plan, the first futuristic aircraft is expected to launch in 2027.

Lucid Air Just Got a Little Better

Android owners rejoice! One of the most clamored-for functions on the Lucid Air has finally arrived: Android Auto connectivity. The automaker announced on June 16, 2025, that a simple over-the-air update to Lucid OS 2.7.0 will bring the 'Android Auto Smart Driving Companion Application' to all Lucid Air vehicles. If you own a phone with Android 11 or higher, you can benefit from Wireless Android Auto, whereas those with a phone on Android 9 or 10 must use a compatible USB cable. 0:02 / 0:09 Nissan's revolutionary self-driving tech hits Japan's streets Watch More 2025 Lucid Air Touring — Source: Ryan Brackin What was the alternative before this? Without Android Auto, owners would have to link their Spotify account directly to the car or rely on plain ol' Bluetooth for their tunes. The latter would still be required for phone calls, though. That wouldn't have been a massive issue, at least for me, if the Spotify connection wasn't spotty on my review car and/or if Bluetooth audio was compatible with album cover art. Much like my press car, however, those issues are now gone, and we can bathe in the glory of Android Auto. 'Android Auto is one of the most requested features by Lucid owners, and we are delighted to announce that we have begun rolling out a software update to add this capability,' said Dr. Jean-Philippe Gauthier, Head of Software Engineering for Lucid. 'Android Auto with Lucid Air's expansive 34-inch Glass Cockpit builds upon our commitment to compromising nothing by enhancing comfort and convenience for owners.' 2025 Lucid Air Touring — Source: Ryan Brackin What's a Lucid Air, again? The Lucid Air EV sedan comes in four flavors, ranging from the $69,900 base level Pure to the utterly ludicrous $249,000 Sapphire. The Pure gets by with plenty of power, up to 430 hp and a 0-60 mph figure of 4.5 seconds. It even has an estimated range of 420 miles and a 17-minute charge time to 200 miles. The Sapphire, on the other hand, gets 1,234 hp and a 0-60 mph time of 1.89 seconds. The range for that model comes in at 427 miles with a 15-minute charge time to 200 miles. One step down from that is the $110,900 Grand Touring, which is more likely the one most people would get. That one has 819 hp, a 0-60 mph time of 3 seconds, 512 miles of range, and a 12-minute charge time to 200 miles. According to the same Lucid press release, Android Auto connectivity for the automaker's new Gravity SUV is also on the way. That gives us even more reasons to celebrate.
