Sean Barton was visiting family in North Carolina when the fun day at Sunset Beach turned dangerous on Wednesday. 'I just got done riding a wave, standing up, I felt something bite down on calf-shin region, just bite down on my leg and then let go pretty quickly there after,' said Sean Barton. He said the adrenaline kicked in.
'Immediately I thought, 'I think I just got bit by a shark and I think I should probably get out of the water now,'' said Barton.
He yelled for his nieces to get out of the water and ran onshore. Barton said his brother-in-law, a former Air Force EMT, patched him up on the beach chairs while his sister called 911. 'Overall, pretty scary. I'm glad it was me and not any of my nieces or any of the kids playing in the water. And definitely lucky that it wasn't a lot worse than it could've been,' said Barton.
Barton ended up in the hospital with 11 stitches. Sunset Beach Fire Department also put out a release warning people about a potential shark in the water. 'You really never expect something like this to happen, especially when you look at the statistics. So, I don't know if it's necessarily a reason to fear the water, but you definitely have to respect that you're in the habitat of some of these creatures,' said Barton.
He said this won't keep him from catching another wave.
'Making my way home now, back to the desert, maybe away from the ocean a little bit. I'll definitely be back in the water at some point in the near future,' said Barton. He has to have his stitches in for 10 more days.
According the the Florida Natural History Museum, last year the U.S. had 28 confirmed unprovoked shark bite incidents which is 60% of bites worldwide.

12 Ukrainian soldiers dead, 60 injured after Russian missile strike on training center

A Russian missile struck a Ukrainian military training ground on the morning of June 1, killing 12 and injuring 60, Ukraine's Land Forces has said. A statement on the attack did not identify the location of the training grounds, nor the specific type of missile used by Russia. "We emphasize that no formations or massive gatherings of personnel were being conducted," the Land Forces press office said in the statement. The authorities say that the bulk of service members present were in air shelters following the alarms that preceded the strike, and that they have assembled a commission to investigate what caused the attack. "In the event of a determination that the action or inaction of responsible individuals led to the death and injury of servicemen, those responsible will be brought to strict accountability," the statement continued. A similar Russian missile attack on a shooting range killed six Ukrainian soldiers in Sumy Oblast late in May. Ukraine Says Russian Strike on Military Base Killed 12 Soldiers

A Russian missile attack on a Ukrainian military training base killed at least 12 soldiers and wounded more than 60 others on Sunday, the Ukrainian military said, in a rare statement acknowledging casualties within its ranks. Ukraine's military did not disclose where the strike occurred, saying in a statement only that there was not a mass gathering at the time of the attack. 'At the time the air raid alert was announced, all personnel were in shelters, except for those who may not have had time to reach it,' Vitalii Sarantsev, a spokesman for Ukraine's Ground Forces, said in an interview with Ukrainian news media. Ukraine's military does not typically disclose official casualty figures, which are treated as a state secret and are a highly sensitive topic in the country. The strike on the training base came after what Ukrainian officials said was Russia's largest combined overnight aerial assault on the country since the start of the war. Russia launched 472 drones and seven missiles overnight, according to Ukraine's Air Force. It said that the vast majority of the drones and three of the incoming missiles were intercepted, but that at least 18 targets were struck. The air force did not provide further details on what was struck.
