AI gives first tantalising look inside a 2,000- year-old Roman scroll

The contents of a 2,000-year-old burnt scroll from the Roman town of Herculaneum have been seen for the first time with the help of artificial intelligence (AI) and X-ray imaging.
The document is one of many scrolls charred by the volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79AD and is too fragile to be physically opened.
It comes as part of a project called the Vesuvius Challenge, which is a competition to read ancient scrolls launched in 2023 by Brent Seales, a computer scientist at the University of Kentucky, and Silicon Valley backers.
The thick, paper-like material called papyrus cannot be physically opened as it would crumble.
The researchers discovered a considerable part of the papyrus and some columns of text.
One of the first words to be translated was the Ancient Greek διατροπή meaning 'disgust,' which appears twice within a few columns of text.
Efforts are now underway by University of Oxford scholars to interpret more of the text.
How does the tech work?
The scroll was placed inside a synchrotron, a machine that uses electrons to produce a powerful X-ray beam that can look into the scroll without damaging it.
The scan creates a 3D reconstruction and then the AI looks for the ink, which then digitally appears. The AI works like 18th-century copyists, replicating what it sees.
' This scroll contains more recoverable text than we have ever seen in a scanned Herculaneum scroll,' Seales, Co-Founder of Vesuvius Challenge and Principal Investigator of EduceLab said in a statement.
'Despite these exciting results, much work remains to improve our software methods so that we can read the entirety of this and the other Herculaneum scrolls,' he added.
Hundreds of carbonised scrolls were discovered in Herculaneum, buried under volcanic ash. The University of Oxford's Bodleian Library holds several of the scrolls.
'It's an incredible moment in history as librarians, computer scientists and scholars of the classical period are collaborating to see the unseen,' Richard Ovenden, Bodley's Librarian and Helen Hamlyn Director of the University Libraries, said.

Archaeologists believe the ship was sailing from northern Italy loaded with ceramics and metal bars before it sunk. Despite a little modern household waste dotting its sunken cargo at 2,567 metres (more than 1.5 miles) below sea level, they were excited about the potential of an archaeological site largely preserved intact. The drone was patrolling the seabed as part of a government project to explore and monitor France's deep-sea resources, from minerals to deep-sea internet cables. Archaeologist Marine Sadania said experts discovered 200 jugs with pinched spouts among the wreckage at the site they have dubbed "Camarat 4". Some of these jugs were marked with the monogram "IHS", the first three letters of the Greek name of Jesus, or covered with plant-inspired or geometric patterns. Those details seemed to indicate the jugs hailed from the Liguria region in what is now northern Italy, she said. 'As if time froze' Experts also identified piles of around 100 yellow plates, two cauldrons, an anchor and six cannons. Modern waste, such as a soda can or an empty yoghurt pot, were spotted too. But despite this, "the site -- thanks to its depth which prevented any recovery or looting -- has remained intact, as if time froze, which is exceptional," Sadania said. Over the coming two years, she and colleagues plan to draw up a 3D digital version of the ship, as well as extract samples from the site to better study them before returning them to the public domain. According to the defence ministry in charge of exploring France's deep seas, researchers can remove an item from a shipwreck by guiding a submarine robot with pincers or arms, via a long cable linking the device to a boat on the surface. The deepest French authorities had found a sunken vessel until now was 2.3 kilometres under sea level off the southern city of Toulon in 2019. The wreckage belonged to La Minerve, a French submarine that plunged to its demise in 1968 with 52 navy crew on board, four minutes only after the start of a routine assignment.

The modest catch nevertheless quickly drew several islanders in search of fresh fish, a rarity in past years in this island chain in the northeastern Aegean Sea, which has fewer than 1,500 inhabitants in total. "Once destroyed, these forests may take decades or even centuries to recover," said the marine scientist, who has worked on corals in the Mediterranean, Caribbean and Pacific. "No one doubts that cutting down a forest is an ecological disaster. The same is true for animal forests," Bramanti said. Fournoi fishermen counter that trawlers do fish in their waters, but turn off their tracking systems to avoid detection. Under pressure globally, trawling is likely to be on the agenda at a United Nations Ocean Conference next week in the French city of Nice. Daoultzis said he fears for the survival of his profession. "Our fishing spaces keep shrinking. Our activity is under threat, and consumers will suffer -- fish prices will skyrocket," he warned.

Eurydice's son Philip II of Macedon conquered Lyncestis in the 4th century BCE, bringing the independent state into the Kingdom of Macedon . This set the stage for his son, Alexander the Great, to become the king of the Macedonian empire. 'It is a civilization that played a major role in today's understanding of the world and the desire to connect different civilizations and cultures,' Engin Nasuh, curator-advisor archaeologist at the National Institute and Museum–Bitola says.
