Boca Juniors, Benfica draw 2-2 in Club World Cup match that includes 3 red cards, 22 fouls

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Boca Juniors scored twice in the first half and Benfica countered with a penalty kick in first-half extra time and a goal in the 84th minute as the teams drew 2-2 in a heated game the included three red cards in a Club World Cup Group C match Monday. Boca Juniors played in a home-like environment with the Argentine club's supporters making up most of the 55,574 crowd at Hard Rock Stadium against one of Portugal's premier teams. Heavily armed police were present at checkpoints to ensure order for a Boca supporters' group that is extremely fierce and passionate. But, most of the rough action was on the field, not in the stands, as the game included the three red cards — two for Boca — four yellow cards and 22 fouls, including 14 by Benfica. Boca scored on a cross and a corner — both from the left side — in the first half. Miguel Merentiel scored in the 21st minute and Rodrigo Battaglia in the 27th. Just before added time was announced in the first half, a penalty kick was awarded to Benfica by center referee Cesar Ramos after a VAR review on a foul by Carlos Palacios on Nicolás Otamendi. Angel Di María converted the kick to cut the deficit to a goal. Otamendi scored the tying goal on a header in the 84th minute. Key moment Otamendi's front post header helped Benfica salvage a point. Takeaways Boca Juniors, after underperforming last season in the Argentina first division and disappointing in the CONMEBOL Copa Libertadores, used the support of their fans to fuel them and earn a point in group play. Their second match, against Bayern Munich in Miami on Friday, will prove to be a more challenging game. Benfica, which was imprecise in its play and gave the ball away many times unprovoked, will take on the only semi-professional team in the Club World Cup, Auckland City, which was badly beaten by Bayern. ___ AP soccer:

Basketball legend says Caitlin Clark's 3-point onslaught left her speechless

Caitlin Clark put the rest of the WNBA on notice as she returned to the Indiana Fever lineup with a vengeance and upended the New York Liberty's undefeated streak on Saturday night. Clark's 32-point victory in the 102-88 win gave Indiana its fifth win of the season. Clark made seven 3-pointers, including three in a 38-second span that even shocked former Liberty star Rebecca Lobo. The Basketball Hall of Famer talked about Clark's performance and what she means to WNBA viewership as the league saw numbers dwindle a bit in her absence. "It means a lot more people are paying attention once again," Lobo said Monday on ESPN's "First Take," via Awful Announcing. "We know how much Caitlin drives ratings. We know how much Caitlin drives attention on the WNBA. For her to come back and do it in that way was just ridiculous. "I'm sitting there at the end of the first quarter when she had that 38-second stretch where she drained deep three after deep three after deep three. I was just sitting there thinking, I've been around this league since 1997. I have never seen that in a WNBA game. Have we seen players go on runs? Of course, we have, but not like that, not where a couple of the 3-pointers are from 30-plus feet." The Fever pointed out just how deep Clark's range was. Three of her 3-pointers came from beyond 30 feet. She hit the rest from at least 26 feet. The WNBA 3-point line is 22 feet away from the basket. "It was an exhibition by her after being out for 19 days to recover from an injury," Lobo added. "Couple that with the other passes that she made and some of the other plays, it was just ridiculous. It's not often that you're watching the WNBA, or that I'm watching it, and I'm like, 'Wow, I've just never seen this before.'" Indiana returns to the floor Tuesday night against the Connecticut Sun. Chicago Sky's Angel Reese seeks ‘mebounds' trademark in response to online criticism

By now, Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese has heard the criticisms of her game. A lot of it is centered around the notion that she is only good at grabbing rebounds, specifically ones that are generated by her own missed shots. The chatter has only grown louder as the Sky (3-7) have struggled to start this season, becoming prominent enough for a term for these rebounds to emerge: 'Mebounds.' Advertisement But rather than act insulted by the slights from online trolls, Reese, who had her first career triple-double Sunday, has taken it all in stride. In fact, she has gone so far as to apply to trademark 'mebounds.' 'Whoever came up with the 'mebounds' thing, y'all ate that up because 'mebounds,' rebounds, 'crebounds' … anything that comes off that board, it's mine,' she quipped in a recent TikTok video. 'And a brand? That's six figures right there.' 💋 ♬ original sound – angel The phrase 'mebounds' originated during an episode of the Club 520 podcast, a show featuring former NBA All-Star Jeff Teague and his co-hosts, DJ Wells and Brandon 'Bishop B Hen' Hendricks. Hendricks jokingly referred to Reese's rebounds as 'mebounds' due to her ability to secure her own missed shots at the rim. The co-host later insisted on X that he was not 'hating,' however, online trolls ran with the phrase, inevitably leading to Reese capitalizing on the momentum. And Reese wasn't kidding. A trademark application was filed on Saturday by her team with the United States Patent and Trademark Office under the goods and services category, meaning, if approved, apparel with the signature phrase could potentially be coming soon. The criticism may have been meant to mock Reese, but the numbers don't lie about her impact on the boards. In her record-breaking 2024 rookie season, Reese averaged 13.6 points, 13.1 rebounds and 1.9 assists in 34 games. Her 13.1 rebounds per game led the league and set a WNBA single-season record. Reese broke the WNBA single-season rebounding record held by Sylvia Fowles as part of a 17-point, 19-rebound effort in a 79-74 loss to the Minnesota Lynx on September 1. That record was broken by Las Vegas' A'ja Wilson later in the month after Reese missed her final six games due to a wrist injury. Reese also became the first player ever to have three consecutive games of 20-plus rebounds and set the record for most consecutive double-doubles, scoring a minimum of 10 points and grabbing at least 10 rebounds for 15 games in a row. Advertisement 'The trolling? I love when y'all do it because, like, the ideas be good,' Reese said. 'Like, when y'all have to alter my face and [expletive] because I'm cute, alright, whatever. That doesn't get me. But when y'all came up with 'mebounds' — because statistically, all the rebounds that I get aren't always just mine. They're, like, the defense's, too, or somebody else on my team. But, when y'all came up with 'mebounds,' y'all ate …' The trademark application wraps a significant weekend for Reese, who recorded the first triple-double of her WNBA career with 11 points, 13 rebounds and 11 assists in Chicago's 78-66 victory over the Connecticut Sun on Sunday. Filing a trademark for a term used by trolls, fresh off a win, is not a bad way to flip the narratives. And with this move, she can, almost literally, laugh to the bank. (Photo by)
