PM Modi to address G7 session as India races ahead on economic front

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the Outreach Session of the G7 advanced countries on Tuesday in the backdrop of India having become the fastest-growing economy in the world, and the only country to clock above 6 per cent GDP growth. According to IMF data, India has taken the lead in economic growth with a 6.2 per cent GDP growth projected for 2025, well ahead of the other G7 countries with the US expected to post a 1.8 per cent growth rate, followed by Canada with 1.4 per cent, and the UK at 1.1 per cent, Japan and France come next with both countries seen clocking a 0.6 per cent GDP growth. Italy is in the 6th spot among the G7 countries with a 0.4 per cent GDP growth, and Germany trails with its economic growth expected at zero amid the global slowdown. India's industrial growth rate at 5.9 per cent for 2024 is also well ahead of the other G7 countries as Canada has posted a 1.2 per cent increase in industrial production, followed by the US with 0.9 per cent, the UK (0.7 per cent), France (0.5 per cent), Italy (0.3 per cent), Japan (0.2 per cent) and Germany with a (-) 0.1 per cent contraction in industrial production. Similarly, India outpaces the G7 countries in the services sector with the purchasing managers index at 60.1, compared with Italy, which has the highest PMI number among the G7 at 54.1. France comes next with 53.1, followed by the UK with 52.9, Germany (52.9), the US (51.4), Canada (51.1), and France trails with the services PMI index at 50.1. The number 50 is the critical mark on the PMI index that differentiates expansion from contraction. While India is not a permanent member of the G7 bloc, the country has been invited to attend the summit several times over the years, with its growing economic and geopolitical importance. Prime Minister Modi reached Canada on Tuesday after completing his visit to Cyprus and will also hold bilateral meetings with G7 leaders, including with host Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. He will depart for a visit to Croatia on Tuesday evening.

Student visas to the US in 2025: What has shifted and what does it mean for applicants

Thousands of international students, including a large number from India , are facing uncertainty as the United States continues a month-long suspension of new student visa interviews . This suspension, which affects F (student), M (vocational), and J (exchange) visa categories, has now entered its fourth week with no official announcement on when services will resume. The delay comes at a critical time for students hoping to begin classes in the fall 2025 academic session, leading to widespread concern among applicants, families, and university officials alike. Policy shifts under Trump administration The freeze on visa appointments is part of a broader tightening of US immigration policy under the current administration. The United States has also introduced a travel ban for nationals of six countries-such as Nigeria and Sudan—restricting entry for students who do not already possess a valid visa as of June 9. According to a report by the Times of India, meanwhile, even for students from countries not directly impacted by the ban, the overall visa process has become more complex. Heightened background checks and expanded scrutiny of academic interests, particularly in sensitive subjects, have become routine. Students are also required to submit extensive documentation, including social media handles, financial records, and academic histories. Many students, who had received offer letters and were preparing for pre-departure steps, now find themselves stuck without visa appointments. Several visa consultants and education counselors have advised students to defer their admissions to the spring 2026 session or to explore alternative destinations such as Canada, Germany, or Australia, where visa processing is comparatively smoother. Some Indian families have begun reassessing their investment in US education altogether, given the unpredictable policy shifts and extended delays. Institutions with significant international student populations have started planning alternatives such as deferred enrollment, remote classes for the first semester, or enhanced support services for affected students. However, for many students, the uncertainty around when interviews might reopen makes it difficult to plan ahead. Applicants are currently advised to regularly check embassy websites for updates and to maintain their paperwork and documentation in order to act quickly if appointments resume. As the fall semester approaches, the window for obtaining a US student visa continues to narrow. The delays reflect a wider shift in US immigration policy, where enforcement and security concerns are increasingly prioritized over accessibility for international students. For now, thousands of aspiring students are left in limbo, uncertain if their academic journeys to the United States will begin as planned. Giorgia Meloni's ‘secret talk' with Emmanuel Macron at G7 summit goes viral, starts meme fest on social media

Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni was caught on camera having a 'secret talk' with French President Emmanuel Macron during the G7 Summit in Canada. The two top leaders can be seen engaging in a whisper as they seemingly talk about a serious issue. In the viral video, Macron can be seen covering his mouth with his hand while he talked to Meloni. A few seconds later, the Italian PM showed him a thumbs up without saying anything else. This year's G7 summit is full of combustible tensions. US President Donald Trump already has hit several dozen nations with severe tariffs that risk a global economic slowdown. There is little progress on settling the wars in Ukraine and Gaza, and now the new conflict between Israel and Iran. Therefore, the leaders could have been talking about absolutely anything. The Internet, however, broke into a meme fest, featuring several 'Melodi' memes. 'Melodi' memes are based on Meloni's camaraderie with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during international events and bilateral meetings. Netizens compared Macron to the lady next door and said he has 'pados ki aunty vibes.' A social media user quipped: 'Me and my office bestie at work meetings.' 'PM Modi will be jealous of you guys,' claimed another user. Another user said, 'Tabi yeh biwi se tapad khatta hai,' referring to the recent slap gate incident between Macron and his wife. Several users also tried guessing about what they were talked about. 'Le Macron-Modi ji kisi ko ph pe babu bol rhe the,' a user said. A few users claimed that Macron is informing Meloni about PM Modi's arrival. 'He may be telling tomorrow modi will come u should not speak with him do promise... Meloni be pakka,' a user said. 'Are wo to devar ji hai, bata rahe hai bhabhi ko ki bade bhaiya Delhi se nikal chuke hai,' another added. Understanding the severity of the G7 summit, a user said, 'He said, Deal Maker Donald Trump wants Deal, but we have to say Big No.'
