
Temperature tops 50°C in the UAE on Friday in hottest May since records began
The UAE recorded the hottest temperature for the month of May on Friday, when it hit 50.4°C in Al Shawamekh, Abu Dhabi. The country's National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) confirmed to The National it was the highest recorded temperature in May since records began in 2003. The previous highest temperature for May was 50.2°C, in 2009. While the temperature in Al Shawamekh was the highest recorded in the country on Friday, other areas were not too far behind. The temperature hit 48°C in Mezaira and Swehain, and peaked at 46°C in Abu Dhabi. In Dubai it reached 44°C. The NCM predicts temperatures will reach 49°C in Al Ain on Saturday and 48°C in Swehain. Both Abu Dhabi and Dubai will experience highs of 47°C. The heat won't subside on Sunday either. with 48°C expected in Al Ain. Temperatures in Abu Dhabi are forecast to hit 47°C, with Dubai enjoying an ever-so-slightly cooler 44°C. The NCM confirmed to the The National earlier this month that the UAE had the warmest April since 2003. Average daily temperature highs for the month stood at 42.6°C.

On Saturday, refreshing rainfall hit various areas of the country, triggering waterfalls and causing wadis to overflow, while some residents played in the rain. The showers provided residents with a respite from the scorching temperatures, which have been steadily climbing ahead of the summer solstice on June 21. Some parts of the UAE has been under a spell of rain over the past few days and it look likely to continue over the long Eid Al Adha weekend. The met department has again forecast for rainfall in some parts of the country on Sunday, June 8. The National Centre of Meteorology said that there will be fair to partly skies at times, with a probability of some convective cloud formation, associated with rainfall eastward and northward. There will be a gradual increase in temperatures and it could get humid by night and Monday morning over some coastal and internal areas with a probability of fog or mist formation. There will be light to moderate southeasterly to northeasterly winds, freshening at times with a speed of 10kmph and 25kmph, reaching 40kmph. The sea conditions will be slight in the Arabian Gulf and in Oman Sea. Temperatures in Abu Dhabi are likely to see a high of 39°C and a low of 28°C, while in Dubai, it will be 38°C with a low of 27°C. Sharjah will identical as Dubai with a high of 38°C and a low of 27°C.
