Malaysia, Russia to begin talks on AI integration in firefighting operations MOU
PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia and Russia have agreed to begin talks on a memorandum of understanding (MOU) in integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into firefighting operations, flight simulation technology and firefighter training.
The Housing and Local Government Ministry said the decision was reached during a bilateral meeting between its minister Nga Kor Ming and Russian Minister of Civil Defence, Emergencies and Elimination of Consequences of Natural Disasters, Colonel General Alexander Kurenkov, on Thursday (June 19).
The ministry, in a statement on Friday (June 20), said the meeting marked a significant step towards strengthening diplomatic ties and fostering strategic collaboration between Malaysia and Russia.
Nga, in the same statement, confirmed that both the government and the Russian Ministry of Civil Defence, Emergencies and Elimination of Consequences of Natural Disasters had agreed to initiate talks on the MOU.
"I believe we can enhance the nation's emergency response capabilities through strategic cooperation and the sharing of expertise in firefighting and disaster management,' he said.
The Housing and Local Government ministry also expressed interest in exploring and assessing the potential use of firefighting technology from Russia, including the EXA aerosol extinguishing system and IPEX extinguishing powder produced by Pyrogen. – Bernama

What's happening with ‘BMW-class' smart toilets, Ti asks Nga
Former MCA vice-president Ti Lian Ker said housing and local government minister Nga Kor Ming owed the public an explanation. PETALING JAYA : Former MCA vice-president Ti Lian Ker has demanded an update from housing and local government minister Nga Kor Ming on the minister's initiative to turn four public toilets into smart toilets. Ti said there had not been any progress report after Nga announced in November that an additional RM4 million had been allocated for the toilets to be built in four locations in Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya. 'It isn't a paltry sum, which is why the ministry owes the tax-paying public an update,' he said. Ti said the public needed toilets that were clean and functioning. However he questioned the need to spend RM4 million on four toilets at a time when the people were grappling with the increasing cost of living. 'This money could be put into better use by providing low cost housing for the needy. We should not be tone deaf to the plight of the hard-core poor by replacing their needs for shelter with million dollar toilets,' he said. Last year, Nga said funds were allocated to construct two 'BMW-i' or Bersih, Menawan, Wangi (clean, attractive, and fragrant) smart toilets each in Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, with such features as built-in automatic bidets, automatic floor-cleaning machines, and automatic doors for people with disabilities. Ti said today: 'We don't need no BMW-class toilets. We need functional and easy to maintain toilets instead of high class toilets with higher end maintenance.' He said a recent outcry over a MyKiosk project by Nga's ministry had made it even more urgent for an update on the toilet scheme. In May, Selangor MCA Youth filed a complaint calling for an investigation into the project's funding and execution. In response, Nga dismissed allegations that the initiative was a white elephant. Under the plan, standardised trading spaces will be provided for rent by the B40 group and small traders.

Indonesia's Prabowo says he wants more Russian involvement in his country's economy
Indonesia's President Prabowo Subianto speaks during a plenary session of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) in Saint Petersburg, Russia, June 20, 2025. -- REUTERS/Anton Vaganov ST PETERSBURG (Reuters): Indonesia wants to see more Russian involvement in its economy, President Prabowo Subianto said on Friday, a day after signing a declaration with President Vladimir Putin on creating a strategic partnership. "We know Russian corporations and we would like to see Russia participate more in our economy," Prabowo said in a speech to the St Petersburg International Economic Forum. Indonesia is a non-aligned country that values the leadership of Russia and China, Prabowo said, adding that he believed many countries in the Global South would agree. He said Indonesia was moving ahead of target towards its goal of self-sufficiency in food, and would be a net exporter of rice and corn within a few years. Indonesia also expects to sign a free trade agreement with the Russian-led Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) this year in a move likely to boost demand for its commodity exports, its senior economic minister said. Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto said the agreement would open up new opportunities for commodities including crude palm oil, coffee and natural rubber. Both parties announced on Thursday they had completed substantive talks for the agreement.
