'It looked like we were mentally tired'

BBC News02-04-2025

Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner, speaking to Sky Sports: "It was a very difficult game, we were not on our top level, especially with focus and mentality, it looked like we were mentally tired. But it was nothing to do with our attitude. We fought until the last second to get the equaliser,"It's important to keep going and keep believing, we kept going and even after scoring we wanted to win the game."The points is from the character of the team, we know we can play better but sometimes it's not to perform at the best level but to fight and keep going until the last minute. It's a very important point."We were missing the accuracy in the final third, the final pass or cross was sloppy."On Matheus Franca scoring his first Premier League goal: "His first goal for Palace. His first game in one and a half years, injured for 10 months, he also had his birthday this week. It was a great win for him."

Guardiola and Man City to poach second Liverpool mastermind in matter of days

Pep Guardiola is rebuilding his backroom staff at Manchester City in the search for fresh ideas, with the Spaniard targeting Premier League title rivals Liverpool Manchester City are set to raid Liverpool for analyst James French as Pep Guardiola continues to revamp his backroom staff. Following a disappointing season that left City without a major trophy, their boss is looking to reinvigorate his reign. He has started by dispatching with three key assistants, with Juanma Lillo, Carlos Vicens, and Inigo Dominguez all leaving the Etihad Stadium. Guardiola is pushing for new voices and ideas to challenge him next season. ‌ That push has seen him look towards Liverpool to raise standards at City. Liverpool have been City's closest challengers over the past decade and are the only team in the past eight seasons to pip them to the Premier League title. ‌ Legendary German manager Jurgen Klopp mostly led that challenge during his nine years at Anfield. He won the title in 2020, with the Reds repeating that success under his replacement Arne Slot this season. Guardiola first targeted Klopp's regime, with his former assistant Pep Lijnders having already agreed a deal to join City. The Dutchman is expected to be in place in time for the Club World Cup, which starts in 10 days. According to The Athletic, City have followed that up by making a move for analyst French. The Portuguese-born anaylst has worked on opposition teams for the Reds since 2012, initally joining during Brendan Rodgers ' reign. He has since become a key man under both Klopp and Slot, but said his goodbyes as Liverpool celebrated their title win last month. French is expected to take on a role focusing on set-piece coaching and analysis at City. Lijnders meanwhile will return to the Premier League in the coming days. He was most recently head coach at Red Bull Salzburg, having decided to leave Anfield at the same time as Klopp. ‌ But he endured a disastrous reign in Austria and was sacked in December, with Salzburg 10 points behind Sturm Graz in the Bundesliga. Lijnders also held talks with Norwich City over their managers' job, though that has since gone to Liam Manning. The Dutchman made a key step towards securing his move to City on Wednesday. Salzburg announced that they had come to an agreement with Lijnders to offically terminate his contract. That move paves the way for him to link up with City as Guardiola's new lieutenant. Salzburg's Managing Director for Sport and General Manager hailed Lijnders as they confirmed the termination of his deal. ‌ "After some very constructive and positive discussions in recent days, we have terminated the contract with our former coach Pepijn Lijnders by mutual agreement," Rouven Schröder and Stephan Reiter said in a joint statement. "We would like to thank Pep once again for his hard work during his time with us and wish him all the very best for his future in football!"

Jack Grealish axed from Man City squad as Pep Guardiola points star to exit door

Jack Grealish is poised to be omitted from the Manchester City squad that will head to the Club World Cup as his exit edges ever closer this summer following several difficult seasons Jack Grealish is set to be left out of Manchester City 's squad for the Club World Cup as he heads closer to the Etihad exit door. The playmaker has endured a difficult campaign and is heavily linked with a summer move. The £100million signing has struggled to live up to his price tag and is by no means a regular under Pep Guardiola, who is set to deliver another telling blow. City's top stars will head to the USA for FIFA's newly expanded tournament with Grealish likely to be absent. ‌ The ex- Aston Villa man is the subject of interest from clubs in the Premier League and overseas with the 29-year-old aware he needs regular minutes if he wants to regain his England spot. City are open to Grealish's exit with loan and permanent moves possible, reports the Telegraph. ‌ Guardiola made it clear on the final day of the Premier League season that the club will work with the player and his representatives to find the best solution for all involved as Grealish continues to slip down the pecking order. City have not yet named their Club World Cup squad but the expectation is that Grealish will be a major absentee. Guardiola's side kick off the tournament on June 18 against Moroccan club Wydad AC. The Manchester outfit, after a disappointing and trophyless year, have already begun their summer rebuild and are targeting players would may further limit Grealish's game time. They pushing on with the signings of AC Milan midfielder Tijjani Reijnders and Lyon forward Rayan Cherki - and want both men in time to take to the Club World Cup. Grealish played a big part in City's treble success back in 2023, which was by far his most influential campaign, but has only started 17 times across the last two seasons with his impact declining. When quizzed about Grealish's omission from the City squad for the final game of the season Guardiola said: 'Of course, Jack has to play. He's an unbelievable player that has to play football every three days. It didn't happen this season and last season either. He needs to do it, with us or another place. ‌ 'It's a question for Jack, his agent and the club. If he stays it will be fine and he will fight like he fought from day one to make a contribution, but not today.' Guardiola also added: 'It's nothing personal with Jack. I'm the person who fought for him to come here and the person who fought for him to stay here this season. I'm the one who said I want Jack Grealish. What happens in the future is a job for Txiki [Begiristain, current director of football), Hugo [Viana, incoming director of football] and the agents.'

Jack Grealish set to be left OUT of Man City's Club World Cup squad as he nears Etihad exit - with forward targeting England World Cup spot after missing out on latest squad

Jack Grealish is set to be left out of Manchester City 's squad for the Club World Cup as his departure looms. City signed now-29-year-old Grealish for £100million in 2021 and he is believed to earn £300,000 a week but he has slipped down the pecking order under Pep Guardiola. He was left out of the squad entirely for City's final Premier League game against Fulham and has only started one league match since Christmas - seven in total last season. The midfielder was told by Guardiola that he could be playing football at 'another place' next season and it appears increasingly likely that his four-year stint in Manchester is drawing to a close. The current transfer window closes on June 10 ahead of the Club World Cup in the United States this summer, but it seems unlikely Grealish will leave before then. An exit is more likely when it opens again on June 16. But the England star is unlikely to play for City again, with the forward not set to be part of the City team at this summer's tournament. The clubs involved in the tournament are required to register an initial squad of between 26 and 35 players, including three goalkeepers. Grealish will not be part of City's party. Grealish has won three Premier League titles, the Champions League and FA Cup at the Etihad but only scored three goals in all competitions last season. Grealish has missed out on the past three England squads and he looks set to move on from City to rejuvenate his career ahead of next year's World Cup. It has reportedly been recognised that Grealish being in the United States for a tournament that could last a month isn't the best was to resolve his future. Guardiola added of Grealish: 'It's nothing personal with Jack. I'm the person who fought for him to come here and the person who fought for him to stay here this season. 'I'm the one who said I want Jack Grealish. What happens in the future is a job for Txiki [Begiristain, current director of football), Hugo [Viana, incoming director of football] and the agents.' England boss Thomas Tuchel, meanwhile, said of his omission from his first camp in charge in March: 'As a headline, I love Jack. I love everything about him. I love his personality, I love his quality. The guy has courage, he can take the heat, he's not afraid of the Bernabeu whistles when he's on the ball, it does not affect him and if it affects him only in the best way. 'So is he a player that should be available and can have an impact in our squad? Yes, 100 per cent. But lately, he simply has no rhythm and he himself, and I agree 100 per cent with this. 'I'm not judging anyone, not at all, but it's just a characteristic of Jack, he gets better with every minute. The more he plays, the better he gets and then he becomes a proper machine.'
