Deepfake video of Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman used to dupe 71-year-old Hyderabad-based doctor of over ₹20 lakh
A 71-year-old retired doctor from Hyderabad was duped of over ₹20 lakh in an online investment scam involving an AI-generated video and a fraudulent trading platform. Following a complaint, the cybercrime wing of the Hyderabad police booked a case and initiated a probe.
The scam began on March 27, 2025, when the victim came across a promotional advertisement online featuring an AI-generated video of Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman endorsing a supposed investment opportunity. The video directed viewers to a trading website via a hyperlink embedded in the description.
Personal documents submitted
After clicking on the link, the victim was contacted on WhatsApp by an individual using a UK-based number. Claiming to represent the company Fin Bridge Capital, the fraudster instructed her to submit personal documents including her Aadhaar card, PAN card, and banking details under the pretext of registration.
Fabricated profits
The victim was then introduced to another individual posing as a financial advisor, who encouraged her to begin with a modest investment of ₹20,000. She was soon shown fabricated profits calculated in dollars, which persuaded her to make further deposits. Trusting the scheme, the doctor continued investing until her total contribution reached ₹20,13,305.
The fraudsters claimed her account had generated a profit of $79,850, allegedly stored in a platform called 'Bitcoin Block'. However, when she attempted to withdraw the returns, she was asked to pay additional charges. It was only at this point that she realised she had been defrauded. The case is under investigation.

Punjab Police arrests two members of inter-state cyber fraud gang
Chandigarh, The cyber crime division of the Punjab Police has busted an inter-state gang involved in investment fraud and arrested two persons, a senior official said on Tuesday. He said Varun Kumar was arrested from Panchkula in Haryana and Sahil Sethi from Abohar in Punjab. According to Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav, the gang used to lure people through Telegram and WhatsApp groups by offering high profits in 'stock market investments'. The fraudsters used to convince the victims to install a fake K application, which projected huge returns on their invested amount. With the application showing fake profits, the victims continued to 'invest' money by transferring them to different bank accounts as directed by the fraudsters. DGP Yadav said the gang's kingpins used to give commission to the arrested accused based on the amounts being transferred into the bank accounts. "Preliminary investigation has revealed that the arrested accused were involved in 34 other cyber fraud complaints filed across 14 states, with the total scam amount exceeding ₹8 crore," Yadav said, adding that a probe is on to uncover the virtual mobile numbers and the broader network behind these fraudulent activities. Sharing the details, Additional Director General of Police , Cyber Crime, V Neeraja said that a thorough investigation was carried out under the supervision of Inspector Jujhar Singh after a victim, who was duped of ₹15 lakh, filed a complaint. Rs 70 lakh gold robbery was insider job, say Pune cops
Pune: Analysis of phone location and records exposed a Mumbai-based logistic firm staffer's lie as Pune's Bund Garden police cracked a Rs70 lakh robbery in front of Pune railway station on June 11. The police arrested the staffer and are searching for his two aides in Rajasthan and Delhi. However, there has been no recovery of the robbed gold ornaments yet. The police established that the robbery was an insider job after the staffer gave inconsistent replies. He claimed that two men threatened him at gunpoint. Discrepancies in the staffer's phone location and records, after he narrated the sequence of the robbery to the police, exposed his lie. Senior Inspector Ravindra Gaikwad of Bund Garden police told TOI, "We arrested Dharmesh Prabhulal Rebari (19) of Rajsamand in Rajasthan. We have identified his two accomplices, who are his childhood friends. Dharmesh moved to Mumbai about one-and-a-half years ago. Many employees of the logistic company are from Rajsamand, and Dharmesh joined the company with their reference, earning a salary of Rs 14,000 a month. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Scientists found a Plane in the Ocean, pulled it out ierer Read More Undo " "We checked the CCTV footage of the spot and realised that the two men approached Dharmesh near the prepaid autorickshaw stand, which remains crowded during the morning rush hours. After the duo robbed the jewellery, his phone, and ID cards, he did not raise an alarm when they fled on the motorcycle. The CCTV footage shows him moving around the Pune station area, and after a gap of three hours, he reached the logistics company's Somwar Peth office, where he informed his office colleagues about the robbery. His office colleagues then informed the Mumbai office, and they came to Pune and lodged a complaint with us," the officer said.
