Vietnam vet from Abilene buried at Texas Veterans Cemetery
ABILENE, Texas () – An Abilene Vietnam veteran was laid to rest at the Abilene Veterans Cemetery as the rain surprisingly stopped before the funeral was to begin.
Honoring our fallen veterans is a notion that we here in the City of Abilene take very seriously. As one Big Country veteran was laid to rest at the Texas Veterans Cemetery, the ceremony was looking bleaker than normal due to rainy conditions.
Stanley Merrill Sterling served for 20 years in the Marine Corps and conducted three tours in the Vietnam War. Sterling was a family man who played the role of 'Mr. Mom' when his wife, Gail Sterling, fulfilled her career in the U.S. Air Force. Following his military career, Stanley Sterling continued his public service by working for the Sheriff's Office and the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. At the service, it was said that Stanley carried his Marine Corps 'Semper Fi Spirit' throughout his life.
The weather for the event consisted of pouring rain that was present in the area all morning, but just minutes before the funeral was set to begin, the rain miraculously let up. Stanley's wife, Gail Sterling, says it was the relief she prayed for.
'I didn't want the Marines getting wet in uniform, and I didn't want it to be ruined by the Texas thunderstorms that we get. So, it was kind of nice. I felt like it was an answered prayer', Gail said.
Stanley Merrill Sterlings' legacy includes three sons, five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Crane needed to remove large tree that fell on Lawrenceville home in storm
Heavy rain and gusty wind toppled trees in a Lawrenceville neighborhood on Saturday. [DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] Channel 2's Tom Regan, who saw a huge tree that fell on a house, estimates the tree was 100 feet tall and weighed several tons. Neighbors said they were greatly relieved that no one was hurt when it crashed on a Lake Ridge Terrace home on Saturday. 'It was really pouring. The wind was gusting real badly,' Cristen Safrid said. The severe weather sent a towering tree from the yard of her rental home, crashing onto the home next door. Safrid said she was at dinner at the time. The tree also sliced through another building on the property. 'We looked in the backyard, and sure enough, tree down on this side, and a tree on our right side went into the neighbor's roof a little bit. It was a really big tree, and it's not like it was a dead tree so, surprised that it was down like that,' Safrid said. Crews using a large crane cut sections of the tree using chainsaws . They then removed the sections from the roof of the home. The process took several hours. Safrid said her neighbor was at home when the massive tree toppled over. The tree did more damage to the smaller structure than the home. 'Nobody got hurt, but it was a huge tree. And it really could've been bad if it had went in a different direction,' Safrid said. The woman who lives at the house hit by the tree told Tom Regan that, in addition to the roof damage, there was interior damage, some of it caused by rain falling through a hole in the roof. Vietnam's Coffee Crop Set for Higher Yields From Ample Rainfall
By and Nguyen Dieu Tu Uyen Save Vietnam's coffee crop is off to a strong start as heavy rainfall bolstered the supply outlook, which could put further pressure on global prices that are near a seven-month low. 'The weather has been quite favorable for coffee trees, with a lot of rain over the last few weeks,' said Trinh Duc Minh, chairman of the Buon Ma Thuot Coffee Association in Dak Lak. The precipitation came at the right time, when the trees needed water for fruiting, he said, adding that it also helped cut irrigation costs, allowing farmers to spend more on fertilizers.

Vietnam Orders Action to Avert Power Crunch as Heat Lifts Demand
Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has ordered government agencies to ensure uninterrupted power supplies for households and businesses as heat waves boost electricity demand to a record. Recent bouts of sweltering heat in northern and central areas of the nation increased peak power demand to almost 52 gigawatts on June 2, an all-time high, according to a statement posted on the government website. The mean temperature in Vietnam topped 30C on Monday, about 8% above the 30-year average for this time of year, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.
