Why McDonald's Will Never Sell Onion Rings
As the largest fast food chain in the world and a multibillion dollar company, McDonald's knows how to maximize efficiency to turn a profit. The fast food service retail chain operator sells nearly 9 million pounds of french fries each day, making the famous fried potatoes its best-selling product worldwide. While offering a variety of sandwiches, including unique McDonald's burgers you can only try abroad, fries have held true as the solo salty side on the Mickey D's menu in the United States. So, although other fast food restaurants offer sides like onion rings as an option, don't expect to see them at the golden arches any time soon.
According to a TikTok video from former McDonald's corporate chef Mike Haracz, McDonald's is most profitable when it can efficiently produce and sell its products in large quantities. He explains, "If McDonald's could sell one thing and that's it, it would be great for them." He adds that it doesn't make good business sense for the restaurant to sell onion rings because they are far less efficient and profitable than french fries (which have a very high markup). In order for onion rings to be profitable, customers would have to pay a dollar or more for the side than they do for fries.
Haracz wraps it up by stating, "Most likely, if they do onion rings ever, it would be a very limited time offer, but I don't foresee that happening anytime soon because McDonald's wants to sell you their french fries because they make so much money on [them]."

If you've ever been to a McDonald's abroad, you've likely noticed menu items that are different than what is offered in the U.S. Some of these international McDonald's menu items might even make you feel a little jealous if you've only had local Mickey D's. Case in point: In 2021, Australia McDonald's offered onion rings nationwide as a limited edition menu item. The crispy, golden rings utilized local onions and included Southern BBQ dipping sauce on the side. Customers could also order them as a garnish for the Aussie Angus burger.
While a McDonald's Australia product, there was one way fast food lovers could snag a box of onion rings from Mickey D's in the States -- by visiting the special U.S. McDonald's that features an international menu at the chain's headquarters in Chicago. Some of the favorites you might expect to find at the global McDonald's in Chi-town could include masala shaker fries from Canada, spicy garlic black pepper McNuggets from Japan, and the mini Köldskal McFlurry hailing from Denmark. There are no onion rings currently on the menu; however, the global menu changes every three months, so customers can keep an eye out for new offerings.

No proof FIFA considering moving 2026 World Cup matches outside US due to concerns over Trump's immigration policies
An online rumor circulating in late May and early June 2025 claimed FIFA, the international soccer governing body, was seriously considering relocating scheduled U.S.-hosted 2026 World Cup matches to Mexico or Canada — countries that are already hosting some matches. According to social media users' posts and videos, this consideration followed FIFA receiving thousands of complaints from players, coaches and fans who refused to travel to the U.S. due to concerns over stringent immigration policies imposed by President Donald Trump's administration. For example, in late May, TikTok user @raulneedshappiness published a video (archived) with the text caption, "Trump Might Lose the 2026 World Cup for the U.S." The clip received over 800,000 views. The clip's voice narrator recounted the story as follows: Breaking news. The 2026 World Cup might be taken away from the United States, and it's all being blamed on President Trump. FIFA is now facing a massive logistical nightmare after receiving thousands of complaints from players, coaches and fans refusing to travel to the U.S. The reason? Trump's harsh immigration policies have sparked fear, tension and international backlash. Some athletes and staff say they're worried about being detained or deported, even with valid visas. Fans across the globe are calling the U.S. unsafe for hosting such a massive event like the World Cup. The situation has become so heated that several countries are now threatening to boycott the tournament if it stays in the U.S., something that goes completely against the unifying spirit of football. With the pressure mounting, FIFA is seriously considering moving the event to Mexico and Canada, seen as safer, more welcoming alternatives. The U.S., originally planned as the main host, now risks losing the biggest sports event on earth to a crisis that has nothing to do with football and everything to do with politics. Could the American dream turn into a diplomatic disaster? Drop your comment and share this update. However, searches of Bing, DuckDuckGo, Google and Yahoo, as well as The Associated Press, CNN, Fox News and The Washington Post, found no credible reporting about FIFA seriously considering relocating U.S.-hosted World Cup matches outside the U.S., at least not as of this writing in early June 2025. Rather, this matter marked the latest chapter of users sharing false or unfounded rumors with the aid of artificial-intelligence (AI) tools. Snopes contacted FIFA's media relations representatives to inquire about the rumor's accuracy and will update this article with more information as it becomes available. The @raulneedshappiness user's TikTok video featured a label accessible to creators when uploading new content that read, "Creator labeled as AI-generated." The video resembled clips Snopes reviewed for previous stories that featured AI-generated elements. The video's illegible letters and words, as well as its shiny, cartoonish depictions of people, clearly signaled its AI origins. In order for humans to create such clips with AI, all they need to do is type a short text prompt to instruct a generative AI tool to produce what they would like to see. That AI tool then quickly handles all of the editing, scripting, visuals and voice narration, and provides a video file for download. (Snopes did not scan the video's audio and text with AI detection tools, as such tools often provide varying, inconsistent and potentially unreliable answers.) Other users also shared this rumor on Bluesky (archived), Facebook (archived), Threads (archived), TikTok (archived) and X (archived). The TikTok account @satire_now, which shares satirical content, published a video (archived) discussing part of the same rumor. According to a website that helps pin down the exact time a TikTok user uploaded a video (information not publicly displayed on the platform), the satirical video appeared almost 24 hours after the @raulneedshappiness account posted its AI-generated clip. In other words, as its owner confirmed in a private message to Snopes, @satire_now did not start the rumor. Further, Snopes didn't locate any indication of the rumor originating from a source describing its output as satire, as of this writing. The aforementioned lookups of search engines located some relevant news regarding Trump's policies and the 2026 World Cup, though again no reports confirmed the central claim about FIFA seriously considering moving U.S.-hosted games to Canada or Mexico. For example, in March, FIFA President Gianni Infantino met with Trump at the White House, with FIFA reporting Trump reaffirmed support for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup and 2026 World Cup tournaments. On April 25, The Associated Press reported U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden, a member of the Democratic Party in Oregon, asked the Trump administration to reconsider policies impacting travelers arriving in the U.S., including citing upcoming sporting events like the 2026 World Cup and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. In early May, NBC News reported members of Trump's Cabinet warned World Cup visitors to the U.S. not to overstay their visas. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem also cast the tournament as "an opportunity for the world to become a friendlier place," adding, "We will take care of their documentation and travel documents, and it will go smoothly. And we will make sure that they can come and enjoy and bring their families and friends and make memories together." On May 13, Politico (archived) reported the details of a letter (archived) the Human Rights Watch organization addressed to Infantino. The letter cited Human Rights Watch's "grave concerns" about Trump's immigration policies, and urged Infantino to be "prepared to reconsider the hosting decision" if the safety of fans and players couldn't be guaranteed. Other reports told of concerns about long visa appointment wait times, as well as European countries issuing travel advisories for the U.S. Two days later, on May 15, Reuters (archived) reported Infantino reassured that "the world is welcome in America," referencing the 2025 and 2026 tournaments. TikTok Shares a Range of Ad Updates at its TikTok World Event
This story was originally published on Social Media Today. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Social Media Today newsletter. TikTok has announced a range of new ad options and tools at its fifth annual 'TikTok World' event, including updated audience analytics, new AI-powered catalog ads, improved creator partnership insights, and more. First off, TikTok's launching a new 'Market Scope' analytics offering, which will enable advertisers to examine key audience insights, based on where they are within the buying cycle. As you can see in this example, the new insights tool will separate your audience into 'Awareness,' 'Consideration,' and 'Conversion' categories, so you can glean more insight into different audience specifics. As per TikTok: 'Using a rigorous, data-backed methodology, TikTok Market Scope tracks 12+ signals to identify your Consideration audience who are 14-16x more likely to convert than those in the awareness stage.' So now, you'll be able to hone in on this specific segment, which could help you produce better results. You'll also be able to break down your data into a range of demographic qualifiers, providing more insight into your marketing plan, and how to reach potential customers with your TikTok promotions. Which then leads into Brand Consideration Ads, a new ad offering that builds off of Market Scope data: 'Brand Consideration is a new campaign objective on TikTok, designed to help brands grow their high-intent, mid-funnel audience pool - users who are already showing meaningful signs of exploration and engagement.' Utilizing the same signals as Market Scope, Brand Consideration Ads provide an easy way to convert that insight into targeted promotions, to a more active audience. TikTok's also announced some new additions to its 'TikTok One' platform, which aims to help connect brands with relevant creators for collaborative campaigns. In order to facilitate more effective creator partnerships, TikTok's launching 'TikTok One Insight Spotlight,' which provides more data on what people are engaging with in the app, and what your target audience, specifically, is looking for. As you can see in this example, the new dashboard will provide an overview of trending keywords and hashtags, with demographic breakdowns attached to each. So now, you'll be able to glean more insight into relevant TikTok trends faster, which could help you find more relevant creators to partner with. TikTok's also launching a new 'TikTok One Content Suite,' where marketers will be able to find and access all user-generated videos mentioning their brand or products on TikTok, which they can then convert into ads, if they choose. TikTok's also added more agency partners to its 'Partner Exchange' element within the TikTok One platform. TikTok's also looking to help brands tap into the rising use of the app as a discovery tool, with 'Search Center,' an AI-powered platform within TikTok Ads Manager which aims to make buying search ads in the app simple and easy. Search Center will include updated keyword suggestion tools, measuring capabilities, and creative tools, aligned with the latest discovery trends. And with search activity in the app up 40% year-over-year, that could be another valuable consideration for your campaigns. Finally, TikTok has announced some new features for its commerce-focused ad tools, in 'Symphony,' 'Smart+,' and 'GMV Max.' For Symphony, its AI video generation platform, it's now looking to integrate Smart+ campaigns into Symphony's capabilities, so you can launch ads direct from the creation element. Smart+ is TikTok's fully-automated, AI-powered ad campaign solution, and the integration with Symphony will bring more creative options into your Smart+ toolset. It's also adding more control options into Smart+ campaigns, so that marketers can better define where their ads will be shown, and to whom, in the app. It's also launching integrated Smart+ Catalog Ads, which will provide more personalized product recommendations, while it's also investing in new measurement solutions to track and measure the performance of these initiatives. There's a heap to consider here, a heap of new ad options and refinements that could change the way that you advertise in the app, offering new ways to reach TikTok's billion-plus users, and connect via influencers, trends, etc. Each element has unique value, and if you're looking to boost your TikTok marketing, you now have a range of new options to consider.
