18 is the charm for Virat Kohli: Royal Challengers Bengaluru icon finally wins the Indian Premier League
Virat Kohli has an IPL trophy. It has taken 18 years for the legend himself and fans to rejoice success in the biggest T20 league in the world. It has taken eighteen years of sheer persistence, determination, loyalty and hard work to achieve the final frontier of the 36-year-old's decorated career. Kohli, who is the only player to represent the same team - Royal Challengers Bengaluru - from IPL's inception, has ruled the tournament with the bat. He has more than 9,000 runs for RCB in over 250 matches for the team across IPL and Champions League T20, the most for any batter. The 36-year-old also has the most eight centuries. He led the franchise from 2011 to 2022 with a final in 2016, where the team fell short by just eight runs. But it was on Tuesday at Ahmedabad that Kohli got the taste of the coveted title after RCB defeated Punjab Kings by six runs. Kohli himself contributed 43 runs in the final. A young, 19-year-old, Virat Kohli had joined RCB from the draft system in the inaugural season in 2008, fresh off an U19 World Cup win as a captain. Kohli did not have the best of starts to his IPL career with just 135 runs in 13 matches. His second season was not the best either, with 246 runs in 16 matches. He showed some promise in 2010, when he got his first 300-run came as a surprise when Kohli was the only player retained by RCB in 2011, ahead of legends of the game like Rahul Dravid, Jacques Kallis, Dale Steyn, Kevin Pietersen and Ross Taylor. The 22-year-old Kohli repaid the faith put in him with 557 runs, including four half centuries that season. The team reached the final but fell short in the final step. He also led the team for the first time in the absence of regular captain Daniel Vettori. The batter was made the full-time captain RCB in 2013. However, his breakout season came in 2016, in which he smashed 973 runs to lead the team to the final. The tally remains the highest for a batter in a single season till date. He smashed four centuries in that season, equalled only by Jos Buttler. The 2017-19 seasons were a slump for RCB, finishing last twice and not making it to the playoffs even once. Kohli, however, was still among runs with more than 400 runs in each of the this time, Kohli had already etched his name in history books, becoming one of the best batters across the world, winning matches single handedly for India and RCB. He gave up the leadership duties in 2022 and ever since has registered three consecutive seasons of more than 600 runs, adding to his legacy with the bat. Having won everything with India - the 50 over World Cup, Champions Trophy and the T20 World Cup - it is only fitting that Kohli has lifted the coveted IPL title after 18 long years, the number he has carried on his shirt all through his legendray career.

'I have given this team my youth, my prime and my experience': Virat Kohli shows raw emotions after realising IPL dream
You cannot write such scripts. In one year, Virat Kohli has completed cricket. Last year, around the same time, he won the T20 World Cup, a few months ago the Champions Trophy and finally tonight, the IPL title. For someone who has been with the RCB for almost two decades and seen it all – euphoria and heartbreaks – it was natural for Kohli to break down in tears. But the words that came out of his mouth afterwards showed the magnitude of the win. Kohli started with this team back in its year of inception. In 2008, Kohli was yet to turn 18. From beginning as a teenager to captaining the side and now becoming a legend of world cricket, Kohli finally knows what it's like to win the IPL. Even as he picked himself up from those tears of joy. Even as he celebrated one of the biggest wins of his career with his better half, Anushka Sharma. Even as he reunited with his best friend AB de Villiers and the Universe Boss Chris Gayle, it was when he spoke about it is when it all made sense. "This win is as much for the fans as it is for the team. It's been 18 long years. I've given this team my youth, prime and experience. I've tried to win it every season, gave it everything I have. To finally have it is an unbelievable feeling. Never thought this day would come, I was overcome with emotion after the last ball was bowled," Kohli said after the win. Also Read: Virat Kohli fails to hold back tears, goes down on his knees after RCB end 18-year-long wait to become IPL champions "It's right up there, if I have to be honest. As I said, I've given everything that I had for the last 18 years. I've stayed loyal to this team, no matter what. I've had moments where I thought otherwise, but I stuck to this team. I stood behind them, they stood behind me. And I always dreamt of winning it with them. And this is far more special than winning it with anyone else because my heart is with Bangalore, my soul is with Bangalore. A few years ago, Kohli was asked if he would ever play for a team in the IPL that's not RCB. After all, even the greatest have switched franchises. Rohit Sharma, the only player to win six IPL trophies started off with the Deccan Chargers before becoming a legend with the Mumbai Indians. MS Dhoni too – albeit he was forced to – was associated with the Rising Pune Supergiant when Chennai Super Kings were banned for two years. Heck, even De Villiers was with Delhi Capitals when they were the Daredevils. But the one man who stayed along with RCB, with one franchise forever, never to have second thoughts, is Kohli. "And as I said, this is the team I'm going to play for till the last day that I play the IPL. So this one is absolutely right up there because you know, as a sportsman, when you grind for something, and this is a very high intensity, high-quality tournament, which is of great value in world cricket today. And I'm someone who wants to win the big tournaments, the big moments, and this one was missing. And tonight, I'm going to sleep like a baby," he added.

Virat Kohli breaks down as 18-year wait for IPL title ends at last: ‘Never thought this day would come'
Virat Kohli could be seen with his hands on his mouth as soon as the second ball of the last over in the Punjab Kings' was fielded at long on and went for no runs. It meant that PBKS had to score 29 runs off the last four balls, a mathematical impossibility unless bowler Josh Hazlewood sent in extras. That never happened, Royal Challengers Bengaluru won their first Indian Premier League title in their and the league's 18th year of existence. Kohli, who has been with the side right from the first season, collapsed to his knees and the tears flowed uninhibitedly. Kohli spoke to Star Sports in the aftermath of the match and admitted that he never thought he would clinch the title. 'This win is as much for the fans as it is for the team,' said the former RCB captain. 'It's been 18 long years. I've given this team my youth, prime and experience. I have tried to win it every season, and I gave it everything I can. To finally have this moment come, it is an unbelievable feeling. I never thought this day would come. I was overcome with emotion (when the) last ball was bowled. I have given each and every ounce of my energy to this team.' Considered one of the greatest batters of all time, Virat Kohli retired from T20Is last year after putting up a player-of-the-match performance in the final the 2024 T20 World Cup, leading India to their first ICC title in 11 years. He ended his illustrious Test career earlier this month during the league stage of the 2025 IPL. Kohli has also won the ODI World Cup in 2011 and the Champions Trophy twice in 2013 and 2025. He said that this win is right up there with all the other big trophies in his cabinet. 'It's right up there. I have given everything I have the last 18 years, stayed loyal no matter what. I had moments when I thought otherwise, but I stuck with them. I stood behind them, they stood behind me. I have always dreamt of winning it with this team. This is far more special than winning it with any other team because my heart and my soul is with Bengaluru,' said Kohli. 'This is the team I am going to play for until the last day that I play the IPL. This is a very high intensity tournament which is of great value to world cricket today. I have won some big tournaments and this one was missing. Tonight, I am going to sleep like a baby.' On Tuesday, Kohli scored 43 in 35 balls. It wasn't the most fluent of innings from the former RCB captain as he struggled to get his shots away. Kohli ended up hitting just three fours and fell to Azmatullah Omarzai in the 15th over. Kohli ended up being RCB's highest run scorer on the day though, with the side finishing their 20 overs with a score of 190/9 on the board. The 36-year-old scored 657 runs in the season overall in 15 matches with a strike rate of 144.71 and average of 54.75. Kohli is the highest run scorer in the history of the IPL with 8660 runs in 267 matches in which he averaged 39.72 and struck at 132.88. He has scored eight centuries and 63 fifties, both of which are the most for any player in the history of the IPL. Kohli is the only player to have played for one team throughout his career in the league, having been signed by RCB during the U-19 draft ahead of the inaugural 2008 season of the IPL.
