Matthew Poon shakes off barren month to bring personal-best season back into focus

Matthew Poon Ming-fai finished March on top of the world before crashing back down to earth during a barren April, but the wheels are very much turning again for 'The Poon Train'.
Poon's career-best victory aboard Straight Arron in March 30's Group Two Chairman's Trophy (1,600m) was his 29th of the season.
With 30 meetings remaining in the campaign, the 31-year-old had every right to be aiming high as he set his sights on sailing past his previous personal-best campaign of 37 winners.
Awaiting in April, however, was a 75-ride run of outs that tested Poon's resolve and had him wondering whether he'd trouble his personal best after all.

'April was a tough month but I just stayed positive. I tried not to overthink things and I just stayed positive,' said the jockey. 'May started and I had a bit of luck and hopefully there is more to come.'
After snapping his drought aboard $10 chance Ka Ying Superb at Sha Tin last Sunday, Poon was in the winners again at Happy Valley on Wednesday night, lifting Keefy home at $19.
Now, with 19 meetings to go and Poon sitting on 31 victories, that number 37 has come into focus again.
'That's my little target for the rest of the season. I will do my best. I will stay focused and hopefully I can beat my personal best,' said Poon, who hopes to ride Straight Arron in the final Group One of the campaign, the Champions & Chater Cup, on May 25.
Poon has eight chances to add to his win haul and consolidate his seventh-placed standing in the jockeys' premiership at Sha Tin on Saturday, with Lady's Choice one galloper heading to the campaign's 70th fixture in strong form.
A Class Three winner under top weight two starts ago, Lady's Choice handled his return to Class Two company with aplomb to finish a close second behind Gustosisimo on April 13.
Both of those efforts came at the same course and distance as Saturday's Class Two Pok Fu Lam Reservoir Road Handicap (1,200m), where Lady's Choice will need to be on his game against a crack field featuring the likes of Fast Network, Bottomuptogether, Wunderbar and Invincible Shield.
'He's quite a consistent and honest horse. I believe in him and hopefully he can put up his best performance. The field is strong but I think he's a chance if he does his best,' said Poon, who rides Lady's Choice for the first time on race day.

Another last-start runner-up among Poon's arsenal is Spangle Fortune, who will look to go one better in the Class Four Pok Fu Lam Public Riding School Handicap (1,650m) on the dirt.
'He's not getting any younger but he's held his fitness well. I've galloped him since his last race and I feel like he's still healthy and not tired, so hopefully he can get another win under his belt,' said Poon of Spangle Fortune.
Casa Legend, Call To Command, Time To Fire, Flying Double, Allcash and Meowth round out Poon's book.

As dragon boating grows around the world, friendship is driving sport's boom

Countries across the world are building competitive dragon boat teams capable of challenging those from China, but the biggest win comes from the friends and communities built along the way, international athletes and officials in Hong Kong said on Saturday. Advertisement The Sun Life Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Races take place in the city this weekend, and more than 4,500 athletes from 190 teams across Hong Kong, mainland China, Europe, Asia and America will compete in a total of 80 races over two days. The international championships started on Saturday, with the action taking place in Victoria Harbour, next to Tsim Sha Tsui East Promenade. 'I want to make everybody [race dragon boats] too, it's becoming more popular, more popular in Asia and in Africa bigger and bigger,' Ehab Gouda, team manager of the Dragon Boat African Alliance, said. The 51-year-old Egyptian, who works in import and export, started dragon boat racing in 2014 in Guangzhou and Hong Kong. He established a team in Egypt two years later, before joining the International Dragon Boat Federation. More than 4,500 athletes from 190 teams will compete in 80 races this weekend. Jimmy Ting hoping for another day in Paradise at Sha Tin

Little Paradise salutes under Luke Ferraris at Sha Tin in May. Photo: Kenneth Chan Jimmy Ting Koon-ho is hoping a better draw and some further improvement will give Little Paradise every chance of remaining undefeated in the Class Three Tin Wan Handicap (1,200m) at Sha Tin on Sunday. Successful in both career starts, Little Paradise clung on by a head after leading throughout from gate 13 on debut in March, before showing his versatility by storming home from behind midfield to salute by a length and three-quarters after jumping from gate 10 last month. Luke Ferraris was in the saddle for both of those triumphs and the South African jockey will be thrilled with the options barrier five gives him aboard Little Paradise this weekend. Ferraris galloped the three-year-old on the Sha Tin dirt on Wednesday morning and Ting was pleased with the jockey's report. Clinging on! Young talent Little Paradise prevails on debut at Sha Tin with @LukeFerraris for Jimmy Ting... #LoveRacing | #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) March 30, 2025 'Luke rode him [Wednesday] morning and said the horse is going better than last time,' Ting said. 'The past two times the horse was still coming up to full fitness – he wasn't 100 per cent. This time he is still not 100 per cent but he has improved.' Little Paradise was hit with a nine-point ratings rise for his last-start win and will carry 124lb on Class Three debut. 'He's a nice horse and after his past two races, the horse is still improving. He gets a better draw this time and he will have his chance to win again,' said Ting of Little Paradise, who tackles the likes of fellow hat-trick seeker Moduleconstruction, another exciting three-year-old in Ahren, Lifeline Express and Romantic Son this weekend. HERE HEEEEE COMES! 🔥 The unbeaten Little Paradise dazzles again at Sha Tin with victory in the Hong Kong Riding For The Disabled Association 50th Anniversary Cup... 🏆 @LukeFerraris #LoveRacing | #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) May 10, 2025 Sitting last in the trainers' premiership with 14 winners for the season, Ting will have a further three chances to lift himself off the bottom on Sunday. Among those is The Absolute, who produced an improved third last start and has drawn barrier four in the Class Three Ping Tin Handicap (1,400m). 'He's a roarer, so he needs a smooth run. If you hold him a little bit tight, he can't breathe, so hopefully he gets a fast pace and can gallop smoothly, then he will run better,' said the trainer. It is Lyle Hewitson who will be tasked with ensuring The Absolute that smooth run, while Harry Bentley hopes aboard Ting's other two runners – Thunder Blink and Happy Universe. Glory Elite breaks through! The Russian Revolution gelding makes all for Derek Leung and Jimmy Ting... #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) May 19, 2024 A weekend winner would be a welcome end to a testing week for Ting after the handler's stable star, Glory Elite, was struck down by tendon injuries to both front legs. Victorious for the fourth time at Happy Valley in April, the 90-rated Glory Elite was set to contest Wednesday night's Class Two at the city circuit, however he will now be rehabbed with an eye to returning during the 2025-26 season. 'It's not too bad, hopefully he can recover,' said Ting. The weekend's Sha Tin meeting marks the return of twilight racing in the city, with Sunday the first of seven fixtures to kick off at 4pm due to the hot weather.
