Rumors will fly, but Trae Young reportedly likely returns to Hawks next season
Trae Young and the Atlanta Hawks' season came to a disappointingly early end when the No. 8 seed dropped Play-In Tournament games to the Magic and Heat, leaving Atlanta out of the playoffs entirely. Atlanta's ownership reacted to that disappointment by firing GM Landry Fields and starting the search for a new head of basketball operations.
That change at the top will lead to a lot of speculation about Atlanta looking to move on from Young this summer, potentially trading him and pivoting to a retooling strategy around Jalen Johnson, Zaccharie Risacher, Dyson Daniels, and others.
Don't bet on it. While it's possible, multiple reports suggest the Hawks will bring Young back next season. Whether they work out a contract extension with him this offseason is another question. Here is what Marc Stein and Jake Fischer wrote at The Stein Line:
'Talk of potential Young trades has undeniably faded after his generally strong 2024-25 season and return to All-Star status. Which is in sharp contrast to the past few seasons that ended with no shortage of 'Trae Trade Talk'...
'Hawks personnel have likewise spoken often this season about Young's growth as a leader to the team's young wing men.'
The reality is that even if the new lead executive in Atlanta wants to trade Young, his trade value around the league is not high, or at least not high enough to get the return the Hawks would seek. Young is perceived as a quality offensive player — he was an All-Star who averaged 24.2 points and 11.6 assists a game this season — but an inconsistent 3-point shooter and weak defender, and while he can raise the floor of a franchise, there is a ceiling on how good a team can be with him as its centerpiece. While some fans had tried to link him to San Antonio last summer, the Spurs made their move and traded for De'Aaron Fox.
Also, Young isn't looking to move on. Here is what NBA insider Chris Haynes had to say about Young and his future.
'He said he knew there was going to be speculation once the Hawks went to a younger core... So he's somebody who, again, just told me a week/a week and a half ago, that he's down with the process. He wants to see this Atlanta Hawks squad turn the corner and he wants to be a pivotal part in that.'
The smart bet is that Young stays with the Hawks next season, but they won't offer him an extension unless he's willing to take a very team-friendly (and tradable) offer. Young would be a free agent in the summer of 2026.
However, it is all going to play out, nothing serious will happen until the Hawks hire their new head of basketball operations.

MLB All-Star Game 2025 picks, predictions: DBacks' Corbin Carroll, Ketel Marte starters?
The Arizona Diamondbacks are struggling this season, falling far below expectations with a 31-34 record before their June 9 game against the Seattle Mariners. But could the team still end up with two starters in the 2025 MLB All-Star Game? Advertisement Voting is underway for the game, and several writers have released early predictions for who could start the July 15 game at the Atlanta Braves' Truist Park. A couple of the projections are high on Carroll, Arizona's dynamic outfielder, and Marte, the DBacks' second baseman. Check out what MLB All-Star picks say about Carroll and Marte's chances to start the 2025 MLB All-Star Game. Voting for MLB All-Star Game starters runs through July 2. More: Arizona Diamondbacks' offense hitless in last four innings, swept by Reds ESPN: Corbin Carroll, Ketel Marte should be National League starters in All-Star Game David Schoenfield picked Carroll to start in the outfield, while also picking Marte to start at second in a tight battle with Brendan Donovan, Brice Turang and Nico Hoerner. Advertisement He wrote: "My vote goes to Marte. He's the best player of the group, and only the injury holds him back in the debate. He's hitting .294/.418/.603 with 12 home runs in 39 games and has more walks than strikeouts, ranking in the 90th-plus percentile in walk rate and lowest strikeout rate. What a fantastic player — often overlooked. Donovan makes it as the backup, while Turang and Hoerner draw the short straw and are left off my hypothetical team." CBS Sports: Ketel Marte, Corbin Carroll early favorites to start All-Star Game for National League Of Marte, Matt Snyder wrote: "Marte trails Cardinals second baseman Brendan Donovan in WAR due to a stint on the injured list earlier this season, but he'll have logged plenty of games by the time we get to the Midsummer Classic and he's the best second baseman in baseball. Through 35 games, he's got six doubles, 10 homers, 17 RBI, 27 runs, has walked more than he's struck out and is hitting .293/.416/.585." Snyder took Carroll along with Pete Crow-Armstrong and James Wood for his NL outfielder starters, writing: Fernando Tatis Jr. and Kyle Tucker have arguments, both for performance this season and for established star power. With my three selections and these two, I feel like it's a clear-cut top five, though I could see a case for Jackson Merrill, Juan Soto and even Ronald Acuña Jr., now that he's back. … Carroll, Tatis and Tucker are established stars, as noted. I took Carroll here, but it was very close among my top five selections." Advertisement Diamondbacks lookahead: Mariners, Padres next on Arizona's schedule Bleacher Report: Corbin Carroll deserves to start MLB All-Star Game Joel Reuter had Carroll among his outfielders, but took Brendan Donovan over Marte at second base. He wrote: "Brendan Donovan vs. Ketel Marte at second base could end up being one of the tighter voting battles, while Kyle Tucker, Pete Crow-Armstrong and Corbin Carroll will need to hold off Fernando Tatis Jr. and rising star James Wood in the NL outfield." Could Ketel Marte and Corbin Carroll be MLB All-Star Game starters for the Arizona Diamondbacks? The Athletic: Neither Corbin Carroll nor Ketel Marte picked as All-Star starters Jim Bowden had Brendan Donovan and Brice Turang as his top options at second base in the National League. He had Carroll behind Kyle Tucker among NL right fielders, writing: "Carroll leads all NL right fielders with 18 homers while posting a .914 OPS with 10 steals and 44 runs scored." Rivals Camp Series: The five best QBs of the 2025 regionals
Editor's Note: This article first appeared on the leader in college football and basketball recruiting coverage. Be the first to know and follow your teams by signing up here. The regional stops of the Rivals Camp Series is in the books with the Rivals Five-Star at the Indianapolis Colts' practice facility coming up later this month. Today, we look at the best players at each position through the regional events starting with quarterback. RIVALS CAMP SERIES: Rivals Five-Star heading back to Indy | Rivals Five-Star roster | Schedule/info CLASS OF 2026 RANKINGS: Rivals250 | Team | Position | State CLASS OF 2027 RANKINGS: Rivals250 | Team | Position | State TRANSFER PORTAL: Full coverage | Player ranking | Team ranking | Transfer search | Transfer Tracker Houston showed in Dallas that he has all the traits of an elite quarterback and it's why USC has made him its top priority in the 2027 class and many others, including Oklahoma, Georgia, Texas, Texas A&M and LSU, are staying involved. The Shreveport (La.) Evangel Christian high four-star is not the biggest quarterback in the world but that's what everyone said about Kyler Murray, Bryce Young and so many others. In today's game, quarterback height is less important than ever before. Houston is a playmaker and even if a camp setting isn't the best for him, the four-star still delivered in a major way. Over the last few days, Jarrard has visited Purdue, Notre Dame and Clemson and heading into the Atlanta camp he had received offers from Georgia and Ohio State as the 2027 four-star from Kennesaw (Ga.) North Cobb is one of the hottest quarterbacks in the entire country. The ball pops off Jarrard's hand. He has velocity, timing and everything else to back up all the attention he's received on the recruiting trail. The Atlanta Camp was loaded at quarterback and even though Jarrard didn't win the MVP award, he was definitely impressive and one of the best QBs at any Rivals regional camp. To beat out Teddy Jarrard, North Carolina commit Travis Burgess, Mississippi State pledge Brodie McWhorter and others for the MVP award, Johnson had a phenomenal performance at the Atlanta camp which was one of many this offseason. The 2027 four-star quarterback from Valdosta (Ga.) Lowndes was sharp, showed off great arm talent, had a clean motion throughout the event and then seemed to get better and better throughout the camp. It was a close race at the top but Johnson edged out some other elite quarterbacks. The five-star quarterback was fantastic as always at the Los Angeles stop and what's even more impressive is that a camp setting is not where Lyons does his best work. The Folsom, Calif., standout sat in the pocket and zipped passes all over the field. He knows when to dial it back a little bit and has such an unreal feel for receivers and immediately having chemistry with them. Lyons is best when he can freelance a little bit, escape pressure and make magic happen and that's not a camp setting but he was still great. Oregon, BYU, Michigan and others continue after him. It's hard to believe that Wade is a 2028 prospect because he has all the tools and is physically developed enough that it wouldn't be a shock to anyone if he reclassified because he doesn't need three more high school seasons. He's now the guy at Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy and he should shine because he is a special prospect who will clearly be under five-star consideration. Wade was arguably the best quarterback at the loaded Los Angeles event, which is always so deep at the position. Even still, the 2028 prospect stood out. He has the total package from decision-making to arm talent and beyond. Oregon, Texas and others have already made an impression.
