Phil Giles ‘wouldn't be massively surprised' if Bryan Mbeumo stays at Brentford
The Cameroon winger, 25, has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United, who submitted an improved bid in the region of £60million around a week ago.
Giles, speaking on Monday afternoon at the unveiling of new head coach Keith Andrews, said the London club would be 'open' to a deal which was 'right for us financially', but insisted Mbeumo staying put was 'not off the table'.
'In terms of expectations, I don't actually know where that will end up,' Giles said.
'I think we made our point clear that Bryan had such a great season and if he earned a massive move now, which is right for us financially, then we would be open for that, but if he's here next season I wouldn't be massively surprised, it would be welcomed, we would be delighted.
'It would save me a massive headache, frankly, and that's not off the table, so let's see how it goes.'
Brentford scored a club-record 66 Premier League goals last season en route to an impressive 10th-place finish, with Mbeumo's 20-goal haul a big factor.
'With Bryan, he had 20 Premier League goals last season so we expected lots of interest and there has been lots of interest,' Giles added.
'He has his own views for the next part of his career and where he will end up, which is fair, because it's his career and those conversations have been going on for the last couple of weeks.'
If Mbeumo does leave, he would add to a growing list of summer departures from Brentford, with manager Thomas Frank joining Tottenham, goalkeeper Mark Flekken heading to Bayer Leverkusen and midfielder Christian Norgaard 'more likely than not', in Giles' words, to leave.

Brendan Rodgers described me as huge Celtic coup after 24 clubs wanted me - now I have retired aged just 28
The former Hoops loanee has called time on his career as he looks to the future Charly Musonda has announced his retirement from professional football at just 28. The former Celtic loanee - once described as a major coup by Brendan Rodgers when he moved to Parkhead - has decided to call time on his playing career and take his path in a new direction. A promising young talent breaking through at Chelsea, he was expected to go on to big things, but a series of setbacks meant his career didn't go as predicted with his playing days ending with stints at Levante and Anorthosis Famagusta. Announcing his retirement on the Rising Ballers podcast, he said: "I've got a big announcement today. Obviously it took some time and I have been thinking about it the last couple of years. "I am announcing I am going to retire from professional football. It is not an easy decision but again, I want to live my life with purpose and help players. "I am building up towards the next stage now. I am working with helping players express themselves, having an opportunity to showcase how good they are because there are so many players around the world who don't get that opportunity. I know about that. So I want to make a change there and I want players to essentially showcase how good they are and back themselves to turn into professional players." His arrival at Celtic was one that had boss Rodgers over the moon and buzzing. He revealed the youngster had 24 clubs chasing his signature with "some real prestigious clubs" on the list of suitors. Real Madrid had even previously made an enquiry about the player but he picked Parkhead and it was a signing the now Hoops gaffer had extremely high hopes for. Ultimately, it didn't work out, but speaking at the time, Rodgers said: 'He is a big talent,' Rodgers said. 'Subject to a medical, it is a great signing for us. He is a young guy who is in a Premier League squad and an exciting player. "Charly had 24 clubs interested in taking him and some real prestigious clubs at that. "We had permission from Chelsea last season for him to come here and speak to us and came up and he got a feel for it. "The staff at Chelsea know how I work but it is a great coup for Celtic and for Scottish football that a young kid who was coming off the bench for Chelsea in the Premier League is up here a couple of weeks later. It is a big signing for us."

Club World Cup exit as painful as Champions League elimination
Bernardo Silva is refusing to look at Manchester City's shock exit from the Club World Cup as a blessing in disguise. The Premier League outfit crashed out of the competition in the early hours of Tuesday morning as they were beaten 4-3 in extra time by Saudi outfit Al-Hilal after a pulsating last-16 clash in Orlando. City had established themselves as one of the favourites to triumph in the United States after winning all three of their group games in convincing fashion. A run to the final would have prolonged their campaign until July 13, however, just five weeks before the next Premier League season begins. After much debate about the impact of the Club World Cup on player welfare, there is a feeling in some quarters that City – after an underwhelming 2024-25 season – need the rest, but Silva does not see it that way. The City captain said: 'No-one wanted to lose. We are very used to not having holidays, unfortunately, because the schedule is crazy and when we are in a competition we take it very seriously. 'We had a lot of ambition for this Club World Cup and we wanted to win it.' Asked if the defeat hurt as much as Champions League elimination, Silva said: 'Yes, a little bit. Yes.' City had taken early control with a ninth-minute goal from Silva at the Camping World Stadium, but they were to rue missing a succession of chances to increase the lead before the break. Al-Hilal turned the game around through Marcos Leonardo and Malcom and reclaimed the advantage again with a Kalidou Koulibaly header after Erling Haaland forced extra time. Phil Foden made it 3-3, but City could not regain the initiative and Leonardo settled an eventful contest – and secured a statement victory for Saudi football – with 112 minutes on the clock. Silva said: 'There was always a feeling of danger coming from them when they recovered the ball in transition and their counters. We allowed them to run way too many times. 'But apart from that we had chances. We scored three goals and we could have scored five or six. 'They punished us. They have a good team with a lot of individual quality and congratulations to them.' Former Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves impressed in the Al-Hilal midfield and fellow Portuguese Joao Cancelo was a threat against his old City team-mates. Silva, also a Portugal international, said: 'I have friends there, I know most of their players and I know the quality they have. 'We were expecting another difficult game like Juventus and when you don't control transitions then good players, like Al-Hilal have, punish you. That's what happened.' City begin the new Premier League season at Wolves on August 16. Silva said: 'We will try to have as much rest as possible but also come back to prepare for the season properly.'

Pep Guardiola reveals huge Man City injury blow after Club World Cup elimination
Pep Guardiola has suggested Rodri has suffered an injury setback following Manchester City's elimination from the Club World Cup. City fell to a 4-3 defeat to Saudi side Al-Hilal in the early hours of Tuesday morning, crashing out of the competition at the last 16 stage. With the game level after 90 minutes, Marcos Leonardo scored the winner in the 12th minute of extra-time to cause the biggest shock of the competition. Rodri has been part of the squad out in the United States having recovered from the anterior cruciate ligament injury that derailed his 2024-25 campaign, coming off the bench in City's opening group matches. The Spain international turned in a sublime performance against Juventus last week – his first start since September – in what was City's best display of the summer. But the Premier League giants were outclassed by Al-Hilal with concern over Rodri casting a shadow. The 29-year-old came off the bench after 53 minutes but was replaced on the 100-minute mark. While he did not elaborate, Guardiola suggested in his post-match press conference the change was enforced. '[Rodri [is] complaining about his injury situation.' Guardiola said. City led 1-0 at the break but spurned a host of chances to extend their lead with Al-Hilal scoring twice in the opening seven minutes of the first-half. Erling Haaland, Jeremy Doku, Savinho, Ruben Dias and Josko Gvardiol all had chances to get on the score sheet with Guardiola left to rue those mossed opportunities despite his side scoring three times. 'In the end we have to score and be clinical. They did not create much in the first half, we did but could not finish it,' he said. More Trending 'I had a feeling we could go through. We allow them to make transitions [but] we created a lot. It is a pity, we have been on an incredible journey together [here] and in a good place. 'The vibe was really good, I cannot thank Manchester City enough and especially the players for training and how they have been playing.' Guardiola has previously complained of City's bloated squad, insisting he news a smaller group to work with ahead of the 2025-26 campaign. 'We have a big squad and we'll see what happens,' he said. 'Now it is tough but we come back in the next days, rest, and start the Premier League.'
