It's impossible to name a best hotel in the world, but you can declare a 10-way tie. That's according to La Liste, a company that publishes hotel and restaurant rankings by synthesizing vast troves of press coverage rather than judging properties independently. Its top 10 list consists entirely of tied scores for the top prize. The winners include the beloved London icon the Connaught, with its feted bar and three-Michelin-starred restaurant (an eponymous spot by French chef Hélène Darroze), and J.K. Place Capri, a stark-white, 22-room cliffside hotel where airy seafront rooms will go for around $2,000 a night this summer. When determining its rankings, La Liste considers reviews from 400 sources such as the Telegraph, Forbes travel guide and Bloomberg's own travel reporting. The content gets pushed through a proprietary algorithm to generate a score on a 100-point scale, similar to the methodology used for the company's global restaurant rankings. That's how 10 hotels ended up in a tie for first place — and how 47 hotels received 99 points in a tie for second, including previous winner Belmond Hotel Cipriani in Venice. 'We are a synthesis of all the rankings and ratings that we find knowledgeable,' says Helene Pietrini, managing director of the Paris-based La Liste, speaking exclusively to Bloomberg about the results. 'We position ourselves like the ranking of the rankings. It's an expression that we use for restaurants, and that is also valid for hotels.' The list of winners skews heavily European, with a total of six hotels located in London, Paris and the beloved Italian vacation destinations of Positano and Capri. The remaining four are divided between North America (the Peninsula Chicago and Rosewood Mayakoba in Mexico) and Asia (the Mandarin Oriental Bangkok, as seen in The White Lotus, and the Peninsula Shanghai). No hotels in Africa or South America were ranked in the top 10. Jörg Zipprick, co-founder and editor-in-chief of La Liste, says the Eurocentric nature of the list reflects the tendencies of travel writers. 'A lot of people travel to Europe, and there's a lot of tradition here already when it comes to hotels,' he says. Familiar brands with substantial marketing budgets to draw in these same writers — like Rosewood, Belmond, Four Seasons, Peninsula and Mandarin Oriental — all performed well too. The six winners for Opening of the Year, an award highlighting notable debuts, include Romeo Roma and Jumeirah Marsa Al Arab in Dubai. La Liste's hotel rankings join a crowded, growing field of lists being generated within the industry. Michelin, the eponymous tiremaker that doles out stars to restaurants, started ranking hotels with its own 'key' system last year. Michelin representatives say they judge exceptional properties based on the overall 'experience' rather than a checklist of amenities like spas or staff-to-guest ratios, though its reviewers are largely limited to hotels in the same destinations where the guide publishes restaurant lists. (And those destinations, too, are often subject to marketing budgets.) The World's 50 Best also has its global list of top hotels, formed by 800 voters who rank the best hotels they've stayed in over the last 18 months. Later this year, that list will expand to 100 hotels, with the top 50 revealed in an awards ceremony in London. Hoteliers say being atop these types of rankings can be game-changing for their individual properties and the broader destinations around them. Still, the creators involved in La Liste, and indeed all these ranking systems, acknowledge that not everyone may agree with their choices — and that anointing any hotel the 'best in the world' is a subjective pursuit at best. 'I've crunched the numbers, and every hotel in the top 250 has the potential to become No. 1 next year or in two years,' says Zipprick. 'If people tell me, 'Hey, my favourite hotel is in your fourth or fifth ranking,' I'm absolutely fine with it.'
