PMK flays Tamil Nadu govt's plan to open new sand quarries
CHENNAI/DHARMAPURI: PMK president Dr Anbumani Ramadoss on Saturday strongly condemned the statement government's alleged decision to open over 20 new sand quarries across 13 districts, calling it a grave threat to the environment.
He warned if the government fails to shut down river sand quarries and take concrete steps to protect the environment, PMK would launch state-wide protests.
In a statement, he pointed out rampant sand mining in the Kollidam river has resulted in seawater intrusion into groundwater sources, turning freshwater saline and affecting hundreds of villages.
Anbumani called for alternative measures instead, such as importing sand from countries like Malaysia and promoting artificial sand production to meet the construction industry's needs at affordable prices.
Meanwhile, attending a party event at Kadathur in Dharmapuri, Anbumani said DMK is the enemy of Vanniyars as it has denied reservation for the community. He also blamed the DMK government and Chief Minister MK Stalin for not taking caste survey and not giving internal reservation for Vanniyars in Tamil Nadu.

Speaking after the return, Kanimozhi emphasised that terrorism linked to Pakistan affects not just India but the global community, calling for collective international action to curb terror. 'The visit was a very positive one... the delegation mostly had opposition MPs and one BJP MP, which in itself was a message to the countries that India stands as one. In spite of our political differences, we stand together as one country... Every time there has been an act of terrorism in India, we have been able to trace it back to Pakistan. It just doesn't stop with India.... the whole world has to be cautious in ending terror... no country should sponsor terrorism,' she said. DMK MP Kanimozhi calls on TN CM after Sindoor outreach
CHENNAI: DMK MP Kanimozhi called on Chief Minister MK Stalin at his camp office on Wednesday following her visit to five countries under Operation Sindoor outreach. Stalin shared on his X platform a video clip of Kanimozhi responding to a question in Spain about the national language of India. In the clip Kanimozhi is seen saying, 'The national language of India is 'Unity in Diversity'.' Stalin wrote on X, 'I am proud of Kanimozhi who spoke Tamil Nadu's language of unity and love as the voice of India.' Kanimozhi led one of the seven all-party delegations formed by the centre to visit key countries and highlight India's zero-tolerance approach towards terrorism. Earlier, when Kanimozhi arrived in Chennai, she was given a grand welcome at the airport by the party cadre.
