The clock is ticking on Claude Giroux and the Ottawa Senators.

Ten days to the opening of National Hockey League free agency, and the veteran winger remains unsigned. That doesn't mean it won't happen, but curiously the Senators haven't yet agreed to a deal with the 37-year-old forward.

Talks have been held regularly, and sources say the Senators remain 'hopeful' that Giroux will be back next season. He signed with Ottawa in 2022 to help get the club back into the Stanley Cup playoffs, which it did in 2025, and there are better days ahead.

Dave Poulin, the Senators' senior vice-president of hockey operations, told season-ticket holders at a summit earlier this month at the Canadian Tire Centre that the Senators wanted to keep Giroux.

'He's a huge part of our hockey team, and he's brought so much to the community,' Poulin said. 'We love Claude Giroux as an Ottawa Senator, and he loves being an Ottawa Senator. Negotiations continue. That's all I have.'

Steve Staios, the team's president of hockey operations and general manager, made similar remarks.

With free agency approaching, it may be time to show genuine affection in negotiations with Giroux. The closer this gets to July 1, the more danger there is that he'll head to the open market, and one executive has told Postmedia that the Montreal Canadiens could show interest.

Because the Senators want Giroux back and he wants to return, that's one hurdle cleared.

Now they must work out the details, which is expected to be a one-year contract.

The belief in NHL circles is that Giroux's camp is likely using the $4 million that Ottawa winger David Perron will make in the final year of his deal as a comparable. That makes sense: Giroux finished with 15 goals and 35 assists for 50 points in 81 games last season.

Postmedia has spoken with several league executives in recent weeks, and they agreed that Giroux's next deal should have a base salary in the $3-million U.S. range plus achievable bonuses that could allow him to make between $4.5 million and $5 million.

Though a report by Hockey Night in Canada's Elliotte Friedman said the two sides were trying to come up with a 'bonus structure,' Postmedia has been told they've yet to agree on the amount of the base salary.

32nd Ottawa Dragon Boat Festival makes waves at Mooney's Bay
Ottawa's annual Dragon Boat Festival is taking place at Mooney's Bay this weekend. CTV's Camille Wilson caught up with some of the attendees. The annual Dragon Boat Festival is back for it's 32nd year in Ottawa. The event is the largest festival of its kind in North America, drawing teams from all over the world. This year's festival has about 145 teams with 72 cities participating. Along with teams all across Canada, paddlers competed in at least two 500 metre races at Mooney's Bay on Saturday. 'The community side is just incredible because it brings together all walks of life,' says John Brooman, CEO and president of the Tim Hortons Dragon Boat Festival. 'It doesn't matter whether you're a first-time paddler or if you're on the national team. People are just out here having a wonderful time. It raises a ton of money for charity,' It is one of the biggest sporting and entertainment events in the nation's capital and is part of a larger Chinese cultural tradition that goes back 2,400 years. 'I grew up with the Dragon Boat Festival as a kid in the UK and I really loved it,' said attendee Kyan Cheng. 'I really wanted to take my three-year-old son to experience it for the first time here. 'This is our 32nd year at the Ottawa Dragon Boat Festival. We come every year and have a lot of fun,' Foote said. 'It's our biggest festival that we do. We do seven festivals every year. This one is the best one.' The festival is raising more than $250,000 for charity this weekend and has raised more than $6 million over the years. The two-day celebration also includes exhibitors, food, a Breast Cancer Survivor Challenge, traditional flower ceremony and dance performances. 'It's great to see such big crowds out for this type of event,' said Chris Bell. 'Lots of big smiles on people's faces. It's been a good, good experience.' There is free admission to all the races and free parking at the Canada Post parking lot. Races are every 10 minutes and will run until Sunday.

Ottawa Redblacks weather conditions, down Calgary Stampeders for first win of CFL season
Redblacks 20, Stampeders 12 The Ottawa Redblacks did what they had to for their first win of the Canadian Football League season Saturday. On a windy, rainy and cold afternoon at McMahon Stadium, the Redblacks used a strong running game, a stout defence and the kicking boot of Lewis Ward to hand the Calgary Stampeders their first loss of the season. In the 20-12 victory that improved the Redblacks record to 1-2 and moved them from last in the East Division into second place, Dustin Crum surely improved his standing from third-string quarterback to the primary backup behind the injured Dru Brown by not turning the ball over and picking up the W. Crum, who completed just nine of 22 passes because the conditions gave normally sure-handed receivers slippery fingers, ran 11 times for 64 yards. And, while William Stanback had his best game as a Redblack with nine carries for 82 yards, stealing the spotlight was his platoon partner in the backfield. Canadian running back Daniel Adeboboye scored the game's only touchdown with 5:02 left, when he pulled in a nine-yard pass from Crum. Right before that, Adeboboye made the biggest offensive play of the day when he took a handoff and burst up the middle for a 52-yard gain. Adeboboye finished the game with 10 carries for 96 yards. The Redblacks' defence was credited with five turnovers, including a late fourth-quarter interception by safety Charlie Ringland, and stopped the Vernon Adams Jr.-directed Calgary offence for the third time on a third-down play to seal the outcome. Ward was 4-for-5 on field goal attempts with scoring boots of 34, 22, 26 and 33 yards before a late 48-yard attempt hit the left upright and stayed out. The Redblacks also cleaned up a trouble spot by taking just four penalties for 26 yards. They held a 6-2 first-half lead that could have been mistaken for the score of a Senators-Flames National Hockey League game. On Ottawa's first possession, Crum ran three times for 30 yards during a 10-play, 52-yard drive that ended with a Ward field goal from the 34. When Calgary's Rene Paredes was wide with a 43-yard field-goal attempt later in the first quarter, Devonte Dedmon returned the ball to Ottawa's 12-yard line, but the Redblacks' Robert Priester was called for an illegal block, and the ball was brought back to the one. Two plays later, Crum was sacked in the end zone by Jaylon Hutchings. It was the third time in two games that a Priester penalty preceded points by the opposition. In last week's loss to Montreal, he was flagged for horse-collar tackles before an Alouettes touchdown and a field goal. Ottawa took a 3-2 lead over Calgary late into the first half because of three turnovers forced by the defence. Along with a fumble recovery by defensive back Amari Henderson, the Redblacks 'stopped' Calgary when Clark Barnes dropped an Adams end-zone pass and again when defensive back Adrian Frye snuffed out an attempt by short-yardage QB P.J. Walker. It was another big play in a road game for Frye, who had two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery against the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the season opener. From that goal-line stand, the Redblacks ran a 12-play drive powered by Stanback to set up Ward's 22-yard field goal. Stanback, who entered the game with 16 carries for 55 yards on the season, ran the ball seven times for 76 yards on that series alone. Ward's second field goal was made possible because Eugene Lewis, who last week had his consecutive games with a touchdown catch streak ended one short of the CFL record, dropped a Crum end-zone pass that hit him in the numbers.

Redblacks edge unbeaten Stampeders 20-12 for first win of CFL season
Dustin Crum tossed a seven-yard touchdown pass to Daniel Adeboboye in the fourth quarter to secure a 20-12 CFL victory for the Ottawa Redblacks over the Calgary Stampeders at McMahon Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Until Adeboboye hauled in the game's only TD pass with 5:02 left on the clock, both teams had to settle for points off of field goals, singles and one safety by the Stamps on a cold, windy and rainy afternoon in front of far less than the official announced attendance of 16,584. Lewis Ward kicked four field goals for the Redblacks (1-2), while Richie Leone added a single. Rene Paredes finished the game with three field goals for the Stampeders (2-1), while Fraser Masin had a single. Jaylon Hutchings tackled Crum in the end zone for a safety to account for Calgary's other two points. The Redblacks opened the scoring at 5:46 of the first quarter with a 34-yard field goal by Lewis. Following an illegal block penalty to Robert Priestner, the Redblacks were forced to start their drive on their own one-yard line. Two plays later, Hutchings sacked Crum in the end zone for a safety to pull the Stamps within a point. On the ensuing drive, the Stamps drove down to Ottawa's seven-yard line, but ended up turning over the ball on downs after Clark Barnes wasn't able to haul in a pass from Adams in the end zone. The miscues Calgary continued in the second as quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. fumbled the ball right into the hands of Ottawa defensive back Amari Henderson at midfield before Priestner atoned for his earlier penalty by tackling backup Calgary quarterback P.J. Walker on the one-yard line for another turnover on downs for the Stamps. This time, the Redblacks avoided another safety and instead Crum engineered an 11-play, 95-yard drive that was capped off by Ward kicking a 22-yard field goal to give Ottawa a 6-2 lead. After Masin kicked a 77-yard single early in the third quarter, Ward responded with a 27-yard field goal before Paredes did his part for the Stamps by splitting the uprights from 42 yards out. After Richie Leone booted a 72-yard punt single early in the fourth quarter to put the Redblacks up 13-9, Paredes responded with a 42-yard field goal to pull the Stamps within a point. After Adeboboye's TD grab, Ward's field-goal attempt from 49 yards out bounced of the left upright and wide to give the Stamps another chance to tie the game. Although Adams completed three straight passes — two of them to former Redblack receiver Dominic Rymes — to get Calgary into Ottawa territory, the Calgary quarterback wasn't able to find an open receiver in the end zone to complete his first touchdown pass of the season.
