AFTER recording another Championship win over an All-Ireland contender, Robbie Brennan reckons his side have set the Royal standard.
Meath condemned Dublin to a first Leinster SFC defeat in 15 years back in April, only to

However, their response to that disappointment has been emphatic.
A win over Cork and a draw with Roscommon assured Brennan's men of a place in the All-Ireland knockout stages with a game to spare.
And they upgraded their qualification on Saturday in Tullamore, where
Facing a six-point deficit at the interval, the Kingdom cut the gap to two approaching the end of the third quarter.

But a Bryan Menton goal was the centrepiece of an unanswered burst of 1-5 that saw the Leinster runners-up pull clear.
Now that their team is one win away from a first All-Ireland semi-final appearance since 2009, Meath fans are salivating at the prospect of being back in the big time.
And the quality of the display that took down Kerry suggested they could be there to stay.
Brennan said: 'There's huge belief in that group and in that team.

"I picked up on that quite early in our management, that they do back themselves and they do have belief. Those results can only help.
'It probably just backs up the Dublin performance, certainly for the public outside. Not necessarily for us, but for maybe the other noises that we're not just a flash in the pan hopefully.'

Regardless of what transpires from here, Brennan's first season at the helm since succeeding Colm O'Rourke has been one of significant progress.
Just over 12 months ago, Meath suffered a 15-point hammering against Kerry in Navan.

But the gaffer insisted: 'We're just taking on the work that Colm did — and all the lads. He blooded so many of these young guys and we're just nudging that forward a tiny little bit.
'Obviously it's new rules, it's a new game — who knows how that bunch would have done with different management under these new rules?
'That's all we've done. We've just tried to add it on a little bit. There's huge enthusiasm and belief in the group and you can see that when they're out there.'
INJURY UPDATES
The bonus of an extra week's break could afford Mathew Costello enough time to recover from the hamstring injury that sidelined him against Kerry.

But James Conlon, who suffered more extensive hamstring damage in training last week, is likely to miss the rest of the campaign.
Brennan admitted: 'The two weeks is massive because you need it.
"I think it's a massive ask on players now and you can see the intensity they're having to get to and the high-speed running they're having to do.
'Turning that around in a week is very difficult. If it was next week, I don't think Matty plays. Two weeks will give him an extra chance.'

Kerry, who will have home advantage, are set to learn their opponents for this weekend's preliminary quarter-final in this morning's draw.
KERRY VIEW
The swift return to action is set to test the Munster champions' strength in depth at a time when Paudie Clifford, Paul Geaney, Seán O'Shea, Brian Ó Beaglaioch, Barry Dan O'Sullivan and Diarmuid O'Connor are all carrying injuries.
After seeing his team fail to avail of the direct route to the last eight, Kingdom chief Jack O'Connor said: 'In many ways, we're glad to have a game next week.
"If you were two weeks thinking about that performance, it wouldn't do anyone any good.

'That's the only road we have left now so we have to travel on that one and hope that we can lift it for next week, because we will need to lift it substantially.'

More Mayo heartbreak - 'They'll rue that loss to Cavan. That one is going to hurt for a long time'

MAYO WERE KNOCKED out of the All-Ireland senior football championship in dramatic circumstances yesterday. A last-gasp Donegal winner sealed their fate after the Green and Red thought they had saved their summer through Fergal Boland's equaliser. But Ciarán Moore had the final say just after the hooter, securing victory for Donegal and sending Cavan through to the preliminary quarter-finals instead. Advertisement The Breffni stunned Mayo in their group opener at Hastings Insurance MacHale Park last month, and while the Westerners bounced back with victory against Tyrone, they lost out on head to head and now exit the championship in mid June. 'They'll look back to that game in Cavan. It's another heartbreak for Mayo,' former Dublin footballer Ciarán Whelan told RTÉ's The Sunday Game last night. 'You can't fault their desire, their effort, their intensity, the hunger they brought to the game. They really tried to unsettle Donegal in how they play. They brought it to a game of chaos, but ultimately, if you're playing with a wind in the Hyde and you have eight shots from play in the first half and you don't have two-point scorers, ultimately that came back to bite them and that's been their problem. 'They give everything for the jersey. You can't fault the players, the passion they give is fantastic, but they just haven't been good enough. 'And still, they were there. It was small margins near the very end. It definitely wasn't Donegal's best performance, but it was because of the way Mayo played and the pressure they put on out the field. 'Listen, it's heartbreak for them and they'll rue that loss to Cavan. That one is going to hurt for a long time.' Another championship ends for Mayo with stinging regrets and lingering frustrations. Ciaran Whelan and Dessie Dolan reflect on their shortcomings #RTEgaa #TheSundayGame — The Sunday Game (@TheSundayGame) June 15, 2025 Former Westmeath forward Dessie Dolan also reflected on 'a tough time' for the county on the programme, after typically rollercoaster 2025. 'It is very disappointing, and very disappointing for Kevin McStay because the level of preparation that goes into a team, the sense of occasion today… we're being spoilt by the football. Mayo were still in the championship with five seconds to go. 'You have to feel extremely sorry for Mayo. In fairness to the players, after the Cavan defeat, they went up to Omagh and bet Tyrone and then put a performance like that on today, which was incredible, to the bitter end. Related Reads 'The most logical venue' - CCCC chief responds to McGuinness criticism Dublin to face Cork: here is the All-Ireland SFC preliminary quarter-final draw 'You'd feel very sorry for them. Cavan's display today probably wasn't at the level you'd expect either. It's a tough time for Kevin McStay and Stephen Rochford, the players and management team, because I think they're extremely well prepared.'

Andrew Omobamidele set to join Strasbourg on permanent basis after decent loan stint at Ligue 1 club

IRELAND defender Andrew Omobamidele is set to join Strasbourg permanently as the French club exercise their €8 million option. Omobamidele, 22, joined the Ligue 1 outfit in January on loan with an option to buy from Nottingham Forest. Advertisement But he featured just ten times - seven times from the start - after suffering an Achilles tendon injury shortly after he arrived in eastern France. Strasbourg qualified for the Conference League next season by finishing sixth last term, and boss Liam Rosenior wants Omobamidele to increase options defensively. Should the transfer now go through next month, it will end a difficult 18 months for Omobamidele at Forest. He joined the Premier League outfit from Norwich City in 2023 for £11 million, but made just 15 appearances during that time. Highly-rated by Stephen Kenny, Omobamidele's progress was hampered by injury when with Norwich and then his lack of game time at Forest. Hallgrímsson started him in his second game in charge against Greece but then dropped him from his squad because of his lack of first team football. But recalled this summer for the friendlies with Senegal and Luxembourg, he was one of five players in the squad to see no action in either game.
