Punjab on heatwave, storm alert

The Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a weather advisory warning of heatwave-like conditions in the southern half of the province, while dust and thunderstorms accompanied by rain are expected in northern districts till April 11.
According to the advisory, temperatures are predicted to remain significantly above normal, ranging from 4°C to 7°C higher than average for this time of year, particularly across central and South Punjab. Urban centres and lowland areas, especially in South Punjab, are likely to experience intense heat.
In contrast, a shallow westerly wave is likely to affect the northern parts of the province, bringing rain, gusty winds and thunderstorms to several districts, including Murree, Rawalpindi, Attock, Chakwal, Talagang, Mianwali and Jhelum. Isolated hailstorms may also occur during the period.
PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia emphasised the need for preparedness and public awareness, particularly for vulnerable groups such as children, senior citizens and individuals with pre-existing health conditions. All deputy commissioners have been instructed to ensure the availability of heatwave protection facilities at public locations.
The PDMA has also directed the school education department to suspend outdoor student activities and to place informational banners at school entry points.
Farmers have been advised to manage their harvest activities cautiously and to protect their livestock from extreme weather. The authority stated that water should be used judiciously during this period. The residents have been urged to avoid unnecessary outdoor exposure, stay hydrated and take protective measures such as covering the head when outdoors.
Tourists have also been advised to postpone travel due to potential risks from high temperatures and adverse weather conditions.
The advisory warns that strong winds, hailstorms and lightning may damage fragile infrastructure such as solar panels, electric poles and roadside trees in the northern districts. The PDMA has activated emergency protocols and directed all relevant departments, including health, education, agriculture, irrigation and local government, to remain on alert. Disaster Emergency Operation Centres (DEOCs) will operate round-the-clock for effective coordination and response. Rescue 1122 teams have been instructed to remain on high alert and ensure adequate staffing and equipment.
To ensure timely dissemination of weather updates and safety information, the PDMA has instructed district administrations to use local mosques, public announcements and social media. Awareness banners are to be displayed at bus terminals, railway stations, livestock markets and other public gathering points.
The health department has also been asked to establish heatwave counters at hospitals and ensure availability of essential medical supplies for treating heatstroke and dehydration. Mobile health units and temporary medical camps will also be set up at key public locations.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, strong winds and thunderstorms with rain are expected in Lahore, Kasur, Sialkot, Narowal, Okara, Faisalabad, Toba Tek Singh, Jhang, Khushab, Sargodha, and Mianwali. The maximum temperature is expected to rise to 37°C in the coming days.
Citizens have been advised to take precautions, avoid unnecessary exposure to the sun, and pay special attention to the well-being of children, the elderly and individuals with heart conditions. The PDMA urged the public to stay updated about the weather conditions through official communication channels.
