HAWANA 2025 Forum: Media Industry Told To Empower AI To Gain Competitive Edge
KUALA LUMPUR, June 14 (Bernama) -- The media industry has been urged to empower artificial intelligence (AI) by actively shaping its development and use to gain a competitive advantage.
FMT Sdn Bhd's head of Bahasa Malaysia and video unit, Zahrul Alam Yahya Shahir, said the media plays a crucial role in feeding the data that AI systems learn from.
Speaking at the HAWANA 2025 Media Forum today, he noted that AI performs best when trained on structured content, as the technology prefers content that clearly outlines the issue and explains the problem.
"The content that AI gives us comes from us. That's why I say it's time for us to empower AI with our content… the analytic content that we put into social media and whatnot.
"Don't be afraid with AI; we (the media) have long survived alongside it," he said at today's forum titled "AI & Media: Tool, Threat or Opportunity?".
He said that media practitioners should be the ones empowering AI, not the other way around.
Another panellist, Astro AWANI senior editor Nazri Kahar, emphasised that technologies such as AI should not be seen as a threat but an opportunity that the media industry must embrace.
He said journalism is at a critical crossroads, demanding that media practitioners quickly adapt to technological advancements.
"This is a crucial moment for us to seize the opportunity. We should not view technologies as enemies that will erase the media industry. Instead, we must set boundaries, adapt and move forward," he said.

LUMUT, June 15 (Bernama) -- From its usual quiet charm, Lumut Waterfront turned vibrant as visitors flocked to the three-day Perak MADANI Rakyat Programme (PMR) 2025, which kicked off on Friday. Trader Mohd Faizal Che Tan, 50, said the Perak PMR 2025, which concluded today, had given a welcome boost to local tourism, drawing visitors to the coastal town famed for its 'ikan bilis mata biru' (blue-eyed anchovies). 'It's a good programme, as it has helped revive tourism here. This place is famous for blue-eyed anchovies, so something like this really helps bring people in. 'I just hope that after this, more local and foreign tourists will keep visiting Lumut and bring back the buzz,' he said when met here today. Afif Isyraf Izuwan Shah, 20, who works at a nearby seafood outlet, said many Perak PMR 2025 visitors would drop by to purchase anchovies, salted fish and other local seafood products. 'Alhamdulillah, since the event started, I've had more customers, including people from outside. A lot of them are from ministries and government agencies, and that's really helped boost my sales. 'This programme has also indirectly given us seafood traders a platform to promote local products like fish crackers, fish satay and sambal ikan bilis,' he said. Held at Lumut Waterfront, the Perak PMR 2025 brought together over 200 services from various ministries and government agencies, attracting over 200,000 visitors to 36 booths throughout the three-day event. Perak is the second location to host the large-scale PMR initiative, a result of strategic collaboration between the Performance Acceleration Coordination Unit (PACU) of the Prime Minister's Department, which serves as the main secretariat, and the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE), as the lead ministry.

Mobile app to streamline fuel subsidy distribution for fishermen
BACHOK: The government is developing a mobile application to facilitate the distribution of subsidised fuel to fishermen nationwide, said Malaysian Fisheries Development Authority (LKIM) chairman Muhammad Faiz Fadzil. He said the app, which is expected to be operational by the end of this year, will replace the personal digital assistant (PDA) devices currently in use. "At present, fishermen rely on PDAs to obtain fuel subsidies, but these devices are outdated and frequently malfunction. "With the new app, the process will be much simpler, allowing eligibility checks and fuel quota details to be accessed directly via mobile phones," he told reporters after officiating the LKIM Rahmah Mesra Programme with Bachok fishermen at the Portable Container System (PCS) site in Pantai Baru Bachok here today. He said the app will also enable real-time monitoring and auditing, helping to curb any potential misappropriation. "Through this app, we will be able to monitor fishermen's performance, including the declaration of their catch. "So far, nearly 40,000 fishermen nationwide are eligible for fuel subsidies, with the amount depending on the type of boat used," he added. On the PCS facility, Muhammad Faiz said the initiative has resolved difficulties faced by fishermen in accessing fuel supplies. "To date, seven PCS units are operational nationwide. We also plan to set up another in Perlis, one in Terengganu, and three in Sabah in the near future," he said. Meanwhile, Muhammad Faiz said LKIM is committed to enhancing youth participation in the fisheries sector to ensure its long-term sustainability. He said only 30 per cent of the 112,000 registered fishermen nationwide are under the age of 40 - a figure that needs to be improved. "LKIM plans to launch a programme to produce local young boat skippers soon, as the industry currently depends heavily on skippers from Thailand. "With modern fishing equipment and support systems, I believe today's tech-savvy youth can be drawn to the sector," he said. Earlier, he presented mock cheques worth a total of RM250,000 to five recipients under the Young Agropreneur Programme for the purchase of boat engines, as part of efforts to support youth involvement in the sector. – Bernama

Malaysia To Contact Iran For Route Through Strait Of Hormuz Remain Open
GENERAL KUALA LUMPUR, June 15 (Bernama) -- Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan will contact his Iranian counterpart, Seyyed Abbas Araghchi, to request that the crucial oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) export route through the Strait of Hormuz remain open. He said that if the strait were to be closed, it could disrupt oil trade routes from the Middle East, leading to a global oil shortage and pushing up prices in the international market. 'There are rumours that Iran may close the supply route in the Strait of Hormuz, which serves as the gateway to the Iran-Oman border, a move that could potentially affect the global oil supply chain. 'This will cause serious complications for the world because a lot of oil supplies come from that area, especially from Iran and Qatar, so we hope that this will not be done and I will try to contact my Iranian counterpart, Araghchi, tonight or tomorrow, to think about it,' he told reporters after opening the Cheras UMNO Delegates' Meeting here today. He said that while Malaysia understands Iran's current position and the tense situation it faces, the country also bears a responsibility to the international community and the smooth flow of global trade. The global market, he added, is closely watching developments in the Strait of Hormuz, amid growing concerns that the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran could disrupt shipping traffic through the narrow and strategic passage. According to a report by Anadolu Agency, the Strait of Hormuz, located between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, is a vital sea route, with about a third of global oil trade, or 17 to 20 million barrels of crude oil and condensate, passing through it every day. About 70 per cent of that amount was sent to Asia, including China, Japan, India, South Korea, Singapore, Thailand, Pakistan and the Philippines, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). Meanwhile, Mohamad said the Foreign Ministry had issued a statement asking Malaysians in Iran, Iraq and Jordan to contact the Malaysian embassy in the respective country.
