LIV Golf Mexico City: Crushers GC, Ripper GC share team lead after Round 1

MEXICO CITY – After one mighty lash into the thin air at LIV Golf Mexico City, Bryson DeChambeau pumped both arms, celebrated with his fans and took the solo lead after Friday's highly entertaining opening round at Club de Golf Chapultepec.
The Crushers GC Captain birdied his final hole, the 396-yard par-4 first, by driving the green and two-putting from 35 feet, providing the finishing touch on an 8-under 63 that leaves him one stroke ahead of two other captains, Legion XIII's Jon Rahm and Ripper GC's Cameron Smith.

The Crushers and Rippers are tied for the team lead at 15 under, six shots clear of Smash GC.
DeChambeau, seeking his first LIV Golf win since 2023, averaged 367 yards on his 14 drives Friday, including two drives of 400-plus yards. His final drive at the first hole traveled 372.9 yards. The 63 is his lowest-ever opening round in LIV Golf.
"It was fun hitting the ball far," DeChambeau said. "Fun to finish off with a nice bang on the last hole."

In all, the field produced 11 drives of 400 yards or longer in the 7,900-foot elevation, with Smash Captain Brooks Koepka having the longest drive at 435 yards on the 11th hole. There were 66 more drives between 370 and 399 yards, giving the Mexico City fans plenty to cheer for during LIV Golf's debut appearance in the nation's capital.
"It's always been exciting around here," said RangeGoats GC Captain Bubba Watson, who is in solo fourth after a 5-under 66. "They love their sports. I'm glad they come out to watch us play golf and watch some of these guys hit it pretty far."
DeChambeau started his day by driving the 316-yard par-4 second and holing a 22-foot putt for eagle. He followed with birdies on the next two holes, and also a birdie at the par-5 seventh (with a 379-yard drive) to move to 5 under after six holes.
But any thoughts of another sub-60 round disappeared during the next eight holes in which he played even par.
"There was a lot of moments where I felt like I was going to get it to 9-, 10-under and there were moments where I'm like, man, I could be 3-under or 2-under easily if I don't get my act in shape," DeChambeau said. "It's a teeter-totter golf course."

Rahm, the 2024 LIV Golf Individual Champion, opened with three consecutive birdies and was 5 under through seven before suffering a pair of bogeys. He played the back nine in a bogey-free 4 under and briefly held the solo lead after draining a 39-foot birdie putt at the 13th.
"What better way to start it than with three birdies in a row," he said. "That just set the tone. Felt really comfortable on the greens all day. Couldn't really have asked for a much better score."
Smith, who is seeking his first LIV Golf win since 2023 like DeChambeau, also started with three consecutive birdies. He had six birdies in his first eight holes en route to shooting 64, his lowest round of the season.
"I've put myself in a really good spot after round one," said Smith, whose Rippers won the previous LIV Golf tournament in Miami, with his teammate Marc Leishman claiming the individual title. "Hopefully, I can go out there over the weekend and give it my all and hopefully walk away with a trophy."
Having finished on the first hole Friday, DeChambeau will now start his second round on the same hole Saturday as part of the leaders' group that includes Rahm and Smith. With course conditions firming up, long drives should continue to be abundant.
"It's going to get firm and fast out here," DeChambeau said. "Be a lot of fun this weekend."

Aussie twosome hot on leaders' heels in Champions Tour

Thomas Bjorn and Darren Clarke have combined to shoot a 12-under-par 59 to grab the early advantage at the American Family Insurance Championship in Madison. Friday's four ball (best ball) format, which takes the lower score of a pairing of two golfers on each hole, is predisposed to the proliferation of lower scores, and indeed, every coupling of golfers competing was under par on the day. Clarke, of Northern Ireland, and Denmark's Bjorn were a dynamic duo on the first day of the tournament's debut at TPC Wisconsin, with each accounting for seven birdies across 12 different holes. But they have Australian twosome Richard Green and Mark Hensby in hot pursuit, just two behind them. "Certainly for me knowing Thomas's game so well made it so much easier for me to go out there and free it up today," Clarke said. "I really enjoy playing with him because I know he's there if I mess up, and likewise I try to be there for him. "We have, it's like a 'no sorry' policy. We're both trying as hard as we can and we both hit a lot of really good shots today and made the most of our opportunities." Each got on individual hot streaks, nabbing birdies on four straight holes. Overall, Clarke pocketed birdies on Nos.2, 4-7, 9 and 14. Bjorn had birdies at Nos.4-5, 11 and 15-18. "I think we were tactically very, very sound today and did the right things when we had to," Bjorn said. "When we had two balls in the fairway or two balls on the green, we could be aggressive and that's why we holed more putts than we probably normally would, and we could take on a little bit more flags." "You feel the consequences in a different way."@thomasbjorngolf on team format with @DarrenClarke60 as they lead @amfamchamp by 2. — PGA TOUR Champions (@ChampionsTour) June 6, 2025 Seven duos are within four strokes of the leaders. Green and Hensby at 10-under 61, were good for second place. Hensby had the rougher day of the two with a pair of bogeys, but six birdies by Green kept them in contention. "I think we just both really enjoy the golf course, and the conditions are beautiful," Green said. "It's a lot of fun to play and hit the right shots required on this golf course. I felt comfortable out there." Defending champion Ernie Els of South Africa and his partner Tim Herron are tied for third at nine under alongside Thailand's Thongchai Jaidee and Australia's Brendan Jones. Tied for fifth at eight under are Australians Cameron Percy and David Bransdon, fellow Australians Stuart Appleby and Michael Wright, South Korea's K.J. Choi and Japan's Hiroyuki Fujita and Americans Gene Sauers and Glen Day. Saturday will switch things up with a scramble format - golfers choose the best lie of the two shoots they take from each location along the hole until the hole is completed - before reverting to best ball format on championship Sunday.

Aussie Leishman on right track for US Open date

Marc Leishman appears to be finding form at the right time with his US Open date on the horizon. The Australian shot a four-under 67 at LIV Golf Virginia in Gainesville on Friday to trail leaders Bryson DeChambeau and Germany's Martin Kaymer by one stroke after the opening round. Leishman is in good knick after coming through qualifying at nearby Rockville by obtaining one of four slots available for next week's Open at Oakmont Country Club. Tied for third, Leishman went on a birdie blitz on the sixth, seventh and eighth holes before making another on the 10th at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club. Bogeys on the 12th and 15th stymied his progress before he rebounded with closing birdies on 17 and 18. Like Leishman, DeChambeau is also in good shape before the defence of his US Open title. He chipped in for an eagle and a birdie on his way to his 66 and shot up the leaderboard after a brief weather delay, eagling the par-5 14th and birdieing each of the next two holes. His chip at No.14 was a soft placement next to a slope, and his ball rolled from right to left right into the cup. At the par-4 16th, he missed the green and chopped his third shot out of some thick rough, only to watch his ball head straight to the pin and disappear again. "Man, what's nice is coming out into some soft conditions," DeChambeau said. "That little chip shot became a hell of a lot easier for me. So I just chipped it out to the right exactly what I saw. I don't know if you saw, but I was studying it before I left. "I was like this looks perfect, came out, still looks perfect, hit it exactly where I wanted it to land, and it went right in the frickin' hole." Also on the same number are Spain's Jon Rahm, searching for his third career major win, Chilean Joaquin Niemann, who received the USGA's first special invite based on LIV performance, Indian Anirban Lahiri and Northern Irishman Graeme McDowell. RangeGoats GC teammates Bubba Watson and Peter Uihlein are tied at three under with Patrick Reed and Belgium's Thomas Pieters, both of 4Aces. Australian Cameron Smith is at one under while compatriots Lucas Herbert and Matt Jones are both at four over. RangeGoats lead the team competition at nine under par, two shots better than 4Aces and DeChambeau's team, Crushers GC.

LIV Golf Virginia: Bryson DeChambeau, Martin Kaymer leading after Round 1

GAINESVILLE, Va. — After a 107-minute weather delay, the star players took advantage of a soft golf course during the first round of LIV Golf Virginia. Bryson DeChambeau, who debuted his new set of custom LA Golf irons this week, was chief among them. The Crushers GC captain immediately chipped his third shot on the par-5 14th in for eagle, vaulting him up the leaderboard. But he wasn't done yet. DeChambeau made birdies on holes 15 and 16, with the latter coming in the form of another chip-in from the deep greenside rough. The surge at the end of the round gave him a share of the first-round lead at 5 under. [MORE: How to watch LIV Golf Virginia 2025: Schedule, start time, TV channels, tee times] Martin Kaymer, who hasn't held a first-round lead since LIV Houston last year, made birdies on 16, 17 and 18 to tie the lead before ending his day with a par on the tough par-4 first hole. The late-round birdie barrage after the delay was not limited to DeChambeau and Kaymer. After finishing strong, Jon Rahm, Anirban Lahiri, Phil Mickelson, Graeme McDowell, Joaquin Niemann and Marc Leishman make up the group that are tied for second place at 4-under par. [MORE: 2025 LIV Golf Virginia odds, predictions: Favorites, picks from the field] Prior to the delay, McDowell held the solo lead, carding a bogey-free 4-under 67. The 45-year-old Irishman hit every green in regulation and was one of three players who went bogey-free on the round. Joining McDowell in the bogey-free club were a pair of 4Aces GC teammates, Thomas Pieters and Reed. On the team side of the competition, Bubba Watson's RangeGoats GC lead by two at 9 under, followed by the Crushers and 4Aces who share second place at 7 under.
