Clements hits a walk-off homer to lead UCLA past Oregon 4-2 in Women's College World Series
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Jessica Clements hit a two-run walk-off home run with two outs to lead UCLA past Oregon 4-2 on Thursday night in the Women's College World Series opener for both teams.
'I feel on top of the world,' Clements said. 'That was awesome.'
Clements' blast off Oregon reliever Elise Sokolsky lifted ninth-seeded UCLA (55-11) into a matchup with No. 12 Texas Tech on Saturday for a spot in the semifinals. The Bruins are well positioned to challenge for a record 13th World Series title.
'Game 1 is the biggest one,' UCLA coach Kelly Inouye-Perez said. 'Our ability to get this one is something I'm very proud of.'
Clements' sixth homer of the season was the second walk-off home run of the day —
Oklahoma's Ella Parker hit a three-run blast
against Tennessee during the early session.
Kaitlyn Terry got the win for UCLA. She gave up four hits and one earned run in seven innings.
Sokolsky took the loss in relief of Lyndsey Grein, leaving No. 16 Oregon (53-9) to play unseeded Mississippi on Friday in an elimination game.
'There's no point in looking back at the past,' Grein said. 'The future might not look perfect, but it also could work out really well for the Ducks, and I think it will.'
Oregon and UCLA both left the Pac-12 to join the Big Ten this season, but a late start gave it a Pac-12 feel. The game started 75 minutes late because storms in the area delayed the previous game. It was fitting that the game between the only West Coast teams at the World Series didn't start until nearly 10 p.m. local time.
For two brief moments, right at 10 p.m. and a few minutes later, the lights went out for several seconds and many fans turned on the flashlights on their cellphones to illuminate Devon Park.
Once the lights came on for good, there was plenty of action.
Oregon's Kedre Luschar hit a single that scored Kaylynn Jones in the third inning to put the Ducks up 1-0.
UCLA's Alexis Ramirez cranked a two-run home run in the fourth — just her fifth of the season — to put the Bruins up 2-1.
In the seventh, with UCLA still leading 2-1, the Bruins appeared to have the second out when Oregon's Paige Sinicki was called out on a play at the plate. The call was overturned because of obstruction by Ramirez, and the run tied the score at 2.
'It was obstruction,' Inouye-Perez said. 'They called it obstruction. Period. The fact that we answered back and walked it off is what I want to walk away from this game with. I'm proud of them. They didn't let that carry the momentum.'

MLB Turns Heads With Ronald Acuna Jr. Post on Wednesday
MLB Turns Heads With Ronald Acuna Jr. Post on Wednesday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. When the Atlanta Braves closed out the 2024 regular season, they did so with an 89-73 mark, good for second place in the National League East, before falling 0-2 to the San Diego Padres in the NL Wild Card Series. Advertisement It was a familiar postseason fate for a franchise accustomed to deep October runs but only one World Series title to show for it since 1995. For much of the early 2025 campaign, fans waited for the return of Ronald Acuna Jr., who had missed the first 49 games recovering from his torn ACL. He finally rejoined the lineup on May 23, immediately showcasing the five-tool prowess that earned him National League MVP honors in 2023. In just 104 at-bats since his debut this season, Acuna has slugged nine home runs, 16 RBIs and 40 hits with a .385 batting average, .496 on-base percentage and .692 slugging percentage. Advertisement As Acuna continues to thrive on base, the MLB revealed on Wednesday that Acuna will be the first confirmed participant in the 2025 T-Mobile Home Run Derby, set for July 14 at Truist Park in Atlanta. Fans online instantly reacted to MLB's post. "Why did you post the winner so soon?" said one user. "Breaking: Ronald Acuna Jr announces he has won the home run derby*," another fan responded. "Let's gooooo Ronnie!" one other user replied. "How is it already over," said another commenter. "He's hitting bombs fs," responded one other user. "LETS GOOOO," another fan replied. Atlanta Braves' right fielder Ronald Acuna Zanine-Imagn Images This will mark Acuna's third Home Run Derby appearance, following semifinal exits at stunningly narrow margins against Pete Alonso in both 2019 and 2022. UCLA's Mick Cronin hires former player David Singleton as an assistant coach
David Singleton, who played five seasons for UCLA, is returning to Westwood as an assistant coach under Mick Cronin. Singleton spent the last two years playing in the NBA G League with the Atlanta Hawks' affiliate in Georgia. He helped UCLA reach the NCAA Tournament Final Four in 2021. He also helped the Bruins make the tournament in 2022 and in 2023, when they made the Sweet 16. As a fifth-year senior, Singleton and the Bruins won the Pac-12 regular-season title. Singleton set the school record for most games played with 164 while playing a fifth year allowed by the NCAA because of the COVID-19 pandemic. He ranks third on the career list for 3-pointers made with 219. He averaged 5.7 points and 1.8 rebounds during his career. "He's always had his eye on becoming a coach, and we are thrilled that we can add him to our staff," Cronin said in a statement Wednesday. "He understands what it takes to get a team to perform at a high level." Singleton said he's grateful to return to his alma mater, where he graduated in 2023 with a sociology degree. "I'm looking forward to adding to the legacy and program in any way that I can as an assistant coach," he said in a statement.

Report: People inside Lakers franchise are 'shocked' at sale of team
For years, plenty of Los Angeles Lakers urged the Buss family to sell the franchise. The franchise had been owned by the family since 1979, when the late Dr. Jerry Buss bought it from Jake Kent Cooke, its previous owner, but after Dr. Buss died in 2013, it has seemingly lost plenty of its luster. Under Dr. Buss, the Lakers won 10 NBA championships and missed the playoffs only twice. But in each of the six seasons following his passing, they failed to reach the postseason, and they also didn't qualify for the play-in tournament in 2022. The team also lost in the first round of the playoffs in 2021, 2024 and 2025. It seemed unlikely that his children, who assumed ownership after his passing, would sell the team anytime soon. But last week, they agreed to sell a majority stake of it to businessman Mark Walter, who has been the Los Angeles Dodgers' primary owner since 2012. According to Dan Woike, many, including some within the organization, are "shocked" that a sale has taken place so soon. Via The Athletic: "Let's get right into the question I've been asked most since Jeanie Buss shockingly agreed to sell the Lakers at a $10 billion evaluation to Walter and his partners," Woike wrote. "And to be clear, people are shocked, including sources inside the organization and inside the NBA, people who thought this day could eventually come but who didn't think it would happen so quickly." Dr. Buss' daughter Jeanie Buss has assumed the role of governor, and she will reportedly retain that title for a period of time despite the sale. The transaction is expected to be complete during the third or fourth quarter of this year. The Dodgers have been one of the most successful, if not the most successful, teams in Major League Baseball since Walter took control of them. They have finished first in the National League West in 11 of the last 12 years and have won two of the last five World Series championships, and they have spared no expense when it comes to bringing in the best people. Walter has been a minority owner of the Lakers since 2021.
