Prediabetes interventions at forefront of treatment: What to know
The conversation around prediabetes has entered a new day for Americans.
Earlier this week, the American College of Lifestyle Medicine published the first clinical practice guideline to prioritize lifestyle interventions in treating Type 2 diabetes and prediabetes.
The guideline offers a comprehensive roadmap for clinicians to effectively incorporate therapeutic lifestyle behavior interventions as a mainstay of treatment, while also complementing existing guidelines for diabetes, many of which mention lifestyle as part of care but often do not provide specifics.
So, what is prediabetes? What are the symptoms? What could be the short-term and long-term complications of having prediabetes?
Prediabetes is a warning of Type 2 diabetes. It develops when a person's blood sugar levels are elevated but not enough to be fully diagnosed. Type 2 diabetes.
According to the American Diabetes Association, people who are 45 years old with prediabetes have a 10-year risk of developing Type 2 diabetes ranging from 9-14 percent.
Researchers estimate that 84 million adults in the U.S. have prediabetes. More than 80 percent of people with prediabetes don't know they have it.
Most people with prediabetes don't have any symptoms, but darkened skin, skin tags, and changes in the eyes could be indicators of a person being prediabetic.
The main cause of prediabetes results from a person being insulin resistant. Insulin resistance happens when cells in your muscles, fat and liver don't respond regularly to insulin. Insulin is a hormone your pancreas makes that regulates blood sugar levels.
Genetics, excess body fat, visceral fat, physical inactivity and persistently eating highly processed, high-carbohydrate foods and saturated fats can all contribute to a person becoming insulin resistant.
Becoming prediabetic can be problematic for a person, with the main complication of it developing into Type 2 diabetes.
Other issues can arise, such as heart attacks, strokes, eye problems, kidney issues and nerve damage.
Reversing prediabetes can be done, but it's typically not possible to reverse diabetes complications.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — June is Scoliosis Awareness Month, which has a local family sharing their story. Jenna Bathke has had scoliosis since she was a teenager. 'I had a sports injury my eighth grade year, and so it was with the chiropractor that he noticed that I had, one leg was longer than the other. So that started the whole scoliosis process for me,' Jenna Bathke said. Next steps for men's prison delayed Jenna's mother and sister have scoliosis as well. Just a few months ago, they also found out her daughter Brooke has scoliosis. 'Brooke has a very common form of scoliosis- adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. It's maybe 80% of what we see in the scoliosis realm. There are other kinds of scoliosis that make up smaller fractions, but hers is fairly algorithmic in its treatments. And she has a moderate curve that's usually treated with bracing at her age,' Sanford Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeon, Dr. William Hadden said. 'I had always kind of had it on the back of my mind to keep an eye out for it. And then, Brooke had pneumonia back in October, and the x-rays, whoever reviewed those at Sanford had noted that there was a curvature in the spine,' Bathke said. They are also evaluating Brooke's little sister Ellee at today's appointment, considering the family history. 'Nobody's identified the gene profile that leads to scoliosis exactly. Yet we do see it run in families, though, so it's not surprising that she has family members with scoliosis, too,' Hadden said. Local artists set up shop at Washington Pavilion 'if you have any concerns to just bring it up to your primary care doctor at their annual exams. It's a quick check, basically, to see if there's any sort of, imbalance between the left side and the right side of their back is one good notification of it and then, I think just the earlier the detection of it, the better,' Bathke said. This common nut can lower your risk of heart disease, dementia and diabetes
A handful of almonds each day could significantly reduce a condition that has been linked to heart disease, diabetes, and dementia, according to a new study in the journal Nutrition Research. Around one in three Americans are affected by metabolic syndrome, and evidence shows they are 'three times as likely to suffer a heart attack or stroke and twice as likely to die from coronary heart disease compared to people without this condition,' lead study author Emily Ho, director of the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University, said in a statement released in the report. 'Poor diet and inactivity contribute to the development of metabolic syndrome, and gut health and chronic inflammation may also play roles,' she added. But swapping processed snacks for a handful of almonds – about 45 nuts – in your daily diet could help curb some of the most serious chronic health risks facing Americans today. In a 12-week clinical trial, researchers studied adults aged 35 to 60 who had been diagnosed with metabolic syndrome. One group consumed 320 calories of almonds daily while the other group ate the same number of calories from crackers. Those who ate almonds experienced significant health improvements, including reductions in total cholesterol, LDL (bad) cholesterol, and waist circumference. Blood tests also showed increased levels of vitamin E, an antioxidant known to reduce inflammation and support heart, nerve, and muscle function. Participants in the almond group also saw lower levels of gut inflammation — a promising sign, as maintaining a healthy gut microbiome is increasingly recognized as vital to long-term health. 'In addition to vitamin E, almonds have polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats, fiber, polyphenols, biotin, copper, potassium and magnesium,' said study co-author Laura Beaver, a research associate in the Oregon State College of Health. 'The changes in cholesterol levels we observed suggest a meaningful metabolic shift in those who consumed almonds daily.' The findings align with previous research highlighting the health benefits of almonds.
