LeBron James exercises Lakers player option for 2025-26 season

Fox Newsa day ago

LeBron James exercised his player option for the 2025-26 season with the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday as he appears to be in the final stages of his lengthy NBA career.
Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul told ESPN about James' decision. The player option is reportedly worth $52.6 million and it will be his eighth season in Los Angeles.
James played 70 games during the 2024-25 season. It was the second straight year he played at least 70 games. He averaged 24.4 points, 8.2 assists and 7.8 rebounds per game as the Lakers put together one of the more intriguing seasons in recent memory.
Los Angeles made the shrewd trade for Luka Doncic that sent Anthony Davis to the Dallas Mavericks. Doncic and James will now have more time to team up and make a play for an NBA championship together at least one more time. The Lakers were 50-32 last season, finishing third in the Western Conference, but were ousted in the first round of the playoffs by the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Paul told ESPN that James wants to win and will be watching the Lakers' moves closely to build a contending roster.
"LeBron wants to compete for a championship," he said. "He knows the Lakers are building for the future. He understands that, but he values a realistic chance of winning it all. We are very appreciative of the partnership that we've had for eight years with Jeanie (Buss) and Rob (Pelinka) and consider the Lakers as a critical part of his career.
"We understand the difficulty in winning now while preparing for the future. We do want to evaluate what's best for LeBron at this stage in his life and career. He wants to make every season he has left count, and the Lakers understand that, are supportive and want what's best for him."
For James, it will be Year 23. He has four championships, four NBA MVPs and 21 All-Star selections.
He opened up about how much he has left to give in an interview with The Associated Press earlier this month, crediting his family as one of the main reasons why he's continuing to play. Bronny James is in the Lakers' organization and Bryce James is set to play in Arizona. Zhuri James, meanwhile, has her sights set on volleyball.
"They're like 'Dad, continue on your dream. This is your dream. Continue on your focus. You've been here for us this whole time,'" he said. "When you have that type of support... it makes it a lot easier."
James also appeared to be intrigued by the possibility of playing with Bryce James as well as Bronny.
"At this point of my career, you think about when the end is. That's human nature," he said. "You think: Is it this year? Or next year? Those thoughts always creep into your mind at this point of the journey. But I have not given it a specific timetable, date. I'm seeing how my body and family reacts, too."

Nico Harrison reveals how the Mavs are planning to utilize Cooper Flagg: "You are going to see us play a different style of basketball"

Nico Harrison reveals how the Mavs are planning to utilize Cooper Flagg: "You are going to see us play a different style of basketball" originally appeared on Basketball Network. The wait was finally over as the NBA conducted its 79th annual draft. Drawing the most hype, the Dallas Mavericks made Cooper Flagg their first overall pick. Long labeled a generational talent even before reaching the college ranks, Flagg's all-around Swiss Army knife skill set made him the obvious choice. Advertisement Mavericks GM Nico Harrison can finally breathe a sigh of relief, considering how things spiraled downwards after the Luka Doncic trade in February. Luckily, the basketball gods decided to show him a way out, with the franchise landing the No.1 pick despite only a 1.8 percent chance. As the formalities were completed, Harrison appeared in front of the media, addressing various aspects related to Cooper's future. Owing to his versatility, there was a lot of intrigue surrounding the position he would play on the Mavericks. "So that would be a J-Kidd thing, but really he's a basketball player, he can handle the ball, he can shoot, he can make plays for people, he's a good passer, he's gonna be on the floor and the big thing is who can he defend? And he's a great defender," Harrison stated about their face of the future. "Positionally, you're gonna see us play a different style of basketball, with him and P.J. (Washington) on the wings," hinted the Mavs GM, who was even subjected to death threats a while back, courtesy of the outrage over trading Doncic. Coach K believed Cooper had no position Another basketball personality knows a thing or two about positionless players who are able to do anything they are asked on the court is Mike Krzyzewski, popularly known as Coach K. Widely regarded as one of the greatest coaches in the history of the sport, he spent 42 seasons at the helm of the Duke Blue Devils, guiding them to five national championships, 13 Final Four appearances, and 15 ACC tournament titles. Advertisement His résumé extends beyond college hoops as well, with a decorated run coaching Team USA to multiple Olympic gold medals and international dominance. When asked about the buzz around Flagg in a 2025 interview with Dan Patrick, Coach K was optimistic about the phenom, saying that he will represent Stars and Stripes in the future. "Not right now, but he will be. He's not just talented, he has a love of the game, and he is a competitive kid. I mean, he is as competitive as any freshman that has come into Duke. He doesn't have a position, he's just a damn good basketball player," he reiterated. Flagg played 37 games in his freshman season, averaging 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 1.4 steals and 1.4 blocks, shooting 48.1 percent from the field. Finishing 19-1, he helped Duke clinch the ACC regular season title. Eliminated in the Final Four, the 18-year-old declared for the NBA draft. Winning back the fan base in Dallas Mavs Nation was certainly not happy with the management's decision to trade the franchise cornerstone in Doncic. The resentment even led to supporters taking to the streets in protest. Things only got worse, with almost every player on the roster hurt, including star guard Kyrie Irving's ACL injury. As a result, they could not make it past the play-in. Looking doomed from almost every angle, the Mavs appear to have found a new lease of life with Flagg. Pairing him with stars like Irving and Anthony Davis gives Dallas a legitimate shot at the title and an opportunity to win back the lost fan base. Everything said, the teenager does not need to be burdened with immediate expectations, allowing him to learn the ropes of the game in the Association before unleashing his full potential. Robinhood launches tokens allowing EU users to trade in US stocks

(Reuters) -Robinhood said on Monday it has launched tokens that will allow its customers in the European Union to trade more than 200 U.S. stocks and exchange-traded funds, including Nvidia, Apple and Microsoft. The commission-free tokens can be traded around-the-clock, five days a week, the trading platform said on Monday. They will be issued through a partnership with blockchain firm Arbitrum. With the move, Robinhood stands to benefit from rising global interest in the U.S. stock market - home to some of the world's most influential tech giants and leading beneficiaries of the AI boom. Tokenized equities mix traditional finance with crypto-like trading, and have been gaining traction among international investors due to the better access, flexible trading hours and lower costs. Experts believe such tokens could dramatically alter the securities investing landscape. In a January opinion piece for The Washington Post, Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev wrote tokenization could also open the door for retail investors to access private companies' stocks. Menlo Park, California-based Robinhood plans to eventually develop its own blockchain that will expand trading hours for tokens to 24/7 from 24/5 currently, it said. Last month, crypto exchange Kraken also launched equities-linked tokens for non-U.S. investors. EXPANDING CRYPTO TOOLS Robinhood also announced several new product offerings, including crypto perpetual futures for its EU customers and staking for U.S. users. The perpetual futures will allow users to make leveraged bets on the prices of cryptocurrencies. Unlike traditional futures, they have no expiry date. Rival Coinbase will also begin offering similar tools to U.S. customers from next month. Meanwhile, staking lets customers lock up their cryptocurrency to help validate transactions on the blockchain, earning rewards in return. The practice had been controversial in recent years, until the Securities and Exchange Commission's staff last month said some forms of staking are not securities offerings.
