Tshwane warns of fake truck driver job scam
The Tshwane metro has cautioned residents to stay alert following a fake job advert circulating on social media.
According to Tshwane spokesperson Lindela Mashigo, on June 9, the misleading message circulating on social media platforms falsely advertised a truck driver vacancy within Tshwane's Region 6 Environmental Management Division.
'The fraudulent message claims that the city is seeking a physically fit truck driver to operate specialised machinery such as mechanical stump grinders and chippers, purportedly to maintain trees and green infrastructure in municipal spaces like road reserves, parks, and traffic islands,' said Mashigo.
He said, the public is warned that this advertisement is false and did not originate from the metro.
'The city does not advertise jobs through social media or messaging platforms. All legitimate job vacancies are posted in newspapers and on the city's official website (www.tshwane.gov.za), specifically under the Job Forum and E-Recruitment portals,' Mashigo said.
He said any recruitment process outside of these channels should be treated as a scam.
'We urge residents to remain vigilant and not fall victim to these fraudulent schemes. The city will not hesitate to take legal action against individuals found to be spreading false information or attempting to exploit vulnerable job seekers,' he said.
Anyone who encounters suspicious job adverts is encouraged to report them immediately to the Tshwane Metropolitan Police Department at 012 358 7095/6 for verification and investigation.

Police response to gender-based violence falls short as victims are left unsupported

Image: Morgan Morgan / Dall-E / DFA / Illustration The Gauteng Police have indicated that they are looking into the allegations made by a concerned Gauteng resident who alleges that her attempts to get help on behalf of a homeless woman who was being beaten up by another homeless male were not returned by the police. This comes as victims of gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) who are often left to fend for themselves whenever they report their experiences to the police continue to experience abuse often in the hands of men. This week, a Tik Tok video by a Joburg woman has trended on social media with other women also relating their own experiences of GBV. According to the concerned citizen who witnessed an act of GBV in her neighbourhood park, what made the situation even worse is the fact that the woman was carrying a child on her back. "I woke up at 5.30am to go to work for five hours and take my dog to the park then I see a homeless man beating up a homeless lady, hitting her in the face, kicking her, punching her, and hitting her with a crate and what made this worse is that this woman has a baby on her back. "So, I ran to my car to call the Randburg and Douglasdale police, with no luck. I then called 10111, but they failed to log the call," she lamented. Image: X Responding to the video, Gauteng spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, said the allegations made by the concerned resident are being taken seriously by the police. "We take the allegations very seriously. Gender-based violence remains a top priority in the South African Police Service. We appeal to the woman who made these allegations to come forward and give us the time and date when the calls were made so that we can investigate. If any of our members are found to have acted inappropriately, disciplinary action would be taken against him or her," Masondo stated. Also, reacting to the viral video, Siyabulela Monakali, speaking on behalf of Ilitha Labantu, an anti-GBV advocacy group, indicated that there is a growing report of victims being turned away or their cases not being properly registered by the police. "This reflects a disturbing and ongoing failure within our police services. Despite numerous declarations that gender-based violence and femicide constitute a national crisis, the reality on the ground tells a different story. "Survivors continue to encounter police stations that are unresponsive, dismissive, or ill-equipped to provide immediate and effective assistance. The failure to properly record and investigate GBV cases undermines survivors' rights and perpetuates a culture of impunity," said Monakali. Sonke Gender Justice spokesperson, Bafana Khumalo, recently revealed that the scourge of GBVF in the country has become prevalent, with the police succeeding in some cases and failing in others. "GBVF is horrendously high in SA, as we all know. The UN General Secretary asserts that the rate of GBVF in SA is five times the global average. Significantly high. You will be aware that when the Minister of Police released the quarterly crime stats last week, the report indicated that sexual offences were still very high. "This is a mixed bag. Some cases are managed well where you have authorities acting swiftly and professionally. Sadly, this is not always the case as we recently witnessed with the Omotoso case," Khumalo said. In a statement, the South African Police Service (SAPS) indicated that it will continue to keep a close eye on GBV cases, having arrested more than 19,000 suspects linked to domestic violence and GBV. "In 12 months, we have arrested more than 19,000 suspects who killed, assaulted, and raped women and young girls in this country. We have also sent 1,700 of them to prison, some got life in prison, and some 20-25 years in prison." As a result of the scourge, the police have recently established the Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Investigations (FCS) unit, with a string of high-profile cases currently being investigated. These, the police say, range from the Olorato Mogale's murder as well as that of 14-year-old Likhona Fose. Monakali said that while the SAPS has adopted policies aimed at improving the handling of gender-based violence cases, in practice, many officers remain unprepared to meet the complex needs of survivors. "Trauma-informed, survivor-centred policing is not yet the norm, and officers too often lack the necessary training and resources to respond with sensitivity and urgency. The National Strategic Plan on GBVF sets clear mandates for capacity building, but implementation remains uneven and underfunded. "Without consistent and rigorous training in gender sensitivity, consent, and victim support, police responses continue to fall short, leading to delays, inadequate investigations, and low conviction rates. Moreover, accountability mechanisms for police misconduct or neglect remain weak, perpetuating a climate where survivors feel unsafe seeking help," Monakali stated. [email protected]

Rietondale residents distraught over police inaction
Rietondale residents have expressed growing frustration over what they describe as ongoing safety concerns being ignored by the metro police, despite repeated calls for intervention. According to Ward 84 Councillor Anru Meyer, there have been several events happening in the area without the metro's permission, and a lack of police visibility is making things worse. 'For over a month now, lack of TMPD visibility has led to by-laws being violated in parts of the suburb, such as Rietondale Park and the property on the corner of Nico Smith Street and Codonia Avenue.' He said the Hardy Muller circle and CR Swart Drive have become taxi ranks, with taxis stopping anywhere on the corner of Nico Smith Street, where buses and trucks need to come to an instant stop. 'These violations make it harder for truck drivers who need to stop [trucks] of more than 15 tons.' He said vagrants are setting up camp at the park, making open fires, and on weekends, events are hosted at the park without the Joint Operations Committee's (JOC) approval. 'Delivery vehicles, trucks and taxis also use it for parking.' He said recently, a sports event was hosted at the park, and spectators were drinking alcohol on the sidewalks and playing loud music. 'When we call the metro police to assist, they are not available, and if they do arrive, nothing is done about the situation they are called for. 'The TMPD has been contacted numerous times on these issues, but to no avail. Emails have been sent with no response.' Meyer said the lack of TMPD visibility has affected the lives of the whole ward, not only Rietondale. He said crime has increased in parts of the suburb and urged for more patrols in Rietondale Park, especially over the weekends. 'In Rietondale last week, a bin was also stolen. There was a recent cable theft in Villieria, which was also not responded to.' He said the TMPD must respond to complaints when there are events without JOC approval. Meyer added that he open space on the corner of Nico Smith and Codonia should be constantly patrolled by by-law enforcement and be cleared regularly. Tshwane spokesperson Lindela Mashigo confirmed that the metro had not been informed of the events that took place on the reported days. 'The city was not informed of any planned events taking place at the facility on those days.' The TMPD was contacted for a response to the complaints. Spokesperson Isaac Mahamba said the issues raised were operational matters, which are not discussed publicly. 'As police, we do not discuss operational plans in public as they are confidential and classified. We don't announce when we are planning to conduct our operations,' he said. Glen Marais armed robbery foiled, six suspects arrested
Swift action by law enforcement and private security companies brought an armed robbery to a halt at Granor Passi in Glen Marais on Tuesday afternoon, June 11. 'The EMPD's Northern Region task team, working alongside the Benoni Flying Squad and several private security companies, including R&D Risk services, CLC, ER24, CPF Sector 2, Red Ops, Mamba, SSS, Motor Track, Jungle Boyz, Rapid Response, and AfriForum responded to the robbery in progress at approximately 12:49,' said EMPD spokesperson Thabiso Makgato. On arrival, officers found six suspects at the scene, four men aged between 40 and 44, and two women aged between 33 and 36. During the incident, the suspects allegedly forced open a safe and assaulted a female staff member, striking her in the mouth with a firearm. She was taken to hospital for medical treatment. Although no money was taken from the premises, officers recovered three firearms at the scene. Also read: Glen Marais resident shot during home invasion 'The suspects were arrested and are facing multiple charges, including business robbery, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, and contravention of immigration laws for being undocumented foreign nationals.'
