Marikana workers should not be forgotten
As we approach Workers' Day, a time meant to honour the struggles and sacrifices of workers, we are reminded of the tragedy that unfolded on 16 August 2012 at Marikana.
The DA demands the immediate tabling of a detailed, costed plan for the Marikana monument, including clear timelines and accountability mechanisms from the Departments of Arts and Culture as well as DEDECT, and a formal apology from the North West Provincial Government for years of delay, dishonesty, and disregard.
This was after MEC Madoda Sambatha, who was delegated by Premier Lazarus Mokgosi to respond to a question posed by the DA, during a Question and Answer session in the North West Provincial Legislature, blatantly admitted that the Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism (DEDECT) failed to secure funding from Treasury, effectively shelving the monument yet again.
Since 2017, repeated public commitments have been made to honour the fallen workers of Marikana:
* In 2017, the North West Government formally committed to constructing a monument at the koppie.
* In 2022, then Minister in the Presidency, Mondli Gungubele, announced that the Bojanala District Mayor would visit the site to assess the area for a future monument.
* In the February 2024 State of the Province Address, former Acting Premier Nono Maloyi recommitted to constructing the monument.
Yet, in 2025, the MEC for Health, Madoda Sambatha, shamelessly told the House that there are no funds, no plan, and no timelines, stating arrogantly that 'we can wait until 2029', now that the matter has been shifted to the Department of Arts and Culture.
Tragically, not only has justice remained elusive for the victims' families, but the North West Government continues to spit on their memory through broken promises and inaction.
This is not merely a failure of project management; it is a moral disgrace and a deliberate betrayal of the Marikana families and their slain loved ones.
The DA has long warned that this government thrives on empty promises and political theatre, using major tragedies like Marikana for populist soundbites, only to abandon communities once the cameras are off.
This Workers' Day, while the ANC clap hands for itself at rallies, the families of the 34 slain mineworkers who were gunned down while demanding better living and working conditions will still be waiting for the dignity of a monument, thirteen years after the massacre.
The memory of the Marikana victims is not a political prop. They were workers. Fathers. Breadwinners. South Africans.
They deserve honour, not more lies and empty promises.

DSD briefs parliament on basic income support policy
The Department of Social Development aims to provide basic income support for citizens between the ages of 18-59. During a briefing with the Portfolio Committee on Social Development, DSD updated parliament on the progress of the development of the Basic Income Support Policy. 'Work on the policy has been ongoing, with the first draft of the policy having been presented to the Social Protection, Community and Human Development Cluster Cabinet Committee on 26 November 2024', said DSD spokesperson, Bathembu Futshane. The committee raised that more consultations were needed in order to discus the policy. It was further suggested that meetings should be held with internal stakeholders. The meeting would focus on the affordability of the policy and linkages of its proposed beneficiaries with economic opportunities. An interdepartmental workshop was held in order to communicate the directive of collaboration. According to Futshane, the workshop affirmed the need to link the policy's beneficiaries to other employment and sustainable livelihood opportunities. 'A follow up workshop will be held in June 2025. Followed by bilateral engagements with the Presidency, the Department of Labour and National Treasury', said Futshane. He said once the consultations are concluded, DSD will approach the SPCHD Cabinet Committee in the second Quarter of the 2025/26 financial year. They will request cabinet to consider the revised policy. Once the policy is approved, it will be published for public comments. Futshane said that in order to ensure stability during the consultation period, the department will consult National Treasury for the R370 Social Relief of Distress grant be extended. The grant will remain in place until the legislative process is complete. Beneficiaries will be protected from extreme poverty and vulnerability while they wait for the policy to come into effect. 'The Department, has for the interim, been granted an extension by the National Treasury to continue with this provision for the 2025/26 financial year', concluded Futshane. Steenhuisen's chief of staff Roman Cabanac's contract terminated
Cabanac's appointment last year was met with outrage and dissatisfaction from South Africans who accused him of racism. Agriculture Minister John Steenhuisen's controversial chief of staff Roman Cabanac's contract has reportedly been terminated. Cabanac made the announcement in a social media post on Thursday. 'I received a letter that terminates my tenure as chief of staff to the minister of agriculture. I received it yesterday, which was my birthday, so fantastic timing. 'I believe there are a few flaws with the termination letter, so I will be looking at options going forward, Cabanac said. Alleged racism Cabanac's appointment last year was met with outrage and dissatisfaction from South Africans who accused him of racism. The Capitalist Party of South Africa member had previously tweeted that black people are not liberals. 'If you want to be a liberal party, it cannot be black-led,' he said, in reaction to Build One South Africa (Bosa) leader Mmusi Maimane's explanation in his book on why he left the DA. Dept of Social Development wants SRD grant extended beyond March 2026
CAPE TOWN - The Department of Social Development wants the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant to be extended beyond March 2026, despite Treasury's intentions to stop the welfare initiative. The department said this was necessary while it finalised the basic income grant policy, which has been reviewed again by the department, despite frustrations from members of Parliament (MPs). The basic income grant policy has been in the making for several years and aims to provide monthly financial support to citizens who qualify. The Department of Social Development told Parliament that the policy was still in the making, and it could be a year before legislation on the policy was developed. Deputy Director-General Brenda Sibeko said until such time that the basic income grant policy was finalised, the SRD grant must be extended beyond March 2026. "So, we will also, in the process of doing the legislation, need the SRD grant to continue. So, in that regard, we will ask Treasury again to extend the SRD so that there isn't a break in that income support while the policy process is underway." She said the policy would also link beneficiaries with economic opportunities so that they did not just rely on the basic income grant.
