Mysuru: After opposing the Ramadas family from constructing the Sri Ram Mandir, a section of Dalit organisations announced on Tuesday the building of the Buddha Gaya of South India in Harohalli village.
This is the place from where the Krishna Shila for the Ram Lalla idol installed at the Ayodhya Ram Mandir was selected. Speaking to reporters, former mayor K Purushottam informed that on Wednesday at 11am, the foundation for the proposed memorial would be laid by planting a sapling of a Peepal tree.
"This event will be held to mark the 2,569th Buddha Poornima," he said. "Buddha and Ambedkar memorial will be built here on the land donated by local Dalit leaders, including the Ramadas family, to guide our society," he said.

Lucknow Constable Assaulted Inside Station, FIR Names ADG's Son; Police Accused Of Cover-Up

Last Updated: Jai Prakash Singh, Abhishek Chaudhary, and Sumit Kumar were booked for the assault and granted bail on personal bonds directly from the police station A constable was assaulted and his uniform torn inside a police station in Lucknow on May 29, in an incident that has sparked outrage and raised serious questions about police accountability. Allegations have emerged that the Lucknow police are attempting to suppress the case, as sources indicate that the accused is reportedly the son of an Additional Director General (ADG). The force now faces criticism for allegedly shielding a top officer's family member. A case was registered against Jai Prakash Singh, Abhishek Chaudhary, and Sumit Kumar in connection with the assault. All three were granted bail on personal bonds directly from the police station. The incident took place at the police station near KD Singh Babu Stadium, while the FIR was filed by Constable Arjun Chaurasia at the Hazratganj Police Station. Meanwhile, in another incident, an FIR has been registered against a BJP leader in Uttar Pradesh for allegedly threatening a Dalit research scholar from Lucknow University over the phone, police said on Tuesday. The complaint was filed late Monday night by Deepak Kannaujia, a research scholar and resident of Turtipar village, at the Ubhaon police station. According to the complaint, BJP leader and block chief Alok Singh allegedly called Kannaujia on May 21, misbehaved with him, mentally harassed him and threatened to kill him. Singh is reportedly a close relative of Rajya Sabha member Neeraj Shekhar, son of former Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar. The complainant claimed that during the call, Singh said, 'Go ahead and record this conversation if you want. I'm not afraid of the administration or the law and order in Uttar Pradesh."

Judicial activism shouldn't turn into judicial terrorism: CJI Gavai

NEW DELHI Chief Justice of India B R Gavai has emphasised that judicial activism is bound to stay but cautioned that it should not be turned into judicial terrorism. CJI Gavai said power of judicial review should be used sparingly and be used only if a statute is violative of the basic structure of the Constitution. "Judicial activism is bound to stay. At the same time, judicial activism should not be turned into judicial terrorism. So, at times, you try to exceed the limits and try to enter into an area where, normally, the judiciary should not enter," he said in response to a question from a legal news portal. Gavai described the Constitution as a "quiet revolution etched in ink" and a transformative force that not only guarantees rights but actively uplifts the historically oppressed. Speaking at the Oxford Union in London on the theme 'From Representation to Realisation: Embodying the Constitution's Promise' on Tuesday, Gavai, the second Dalit and the first Buddhist to hold India's highest judicial office, highlighted the positive impact of the Constitution on marginalised communities and gave his example to drive home the point. "Many decades ago, millions of citizens of India were called 'untouchables'. They were told they were impure. They were told that they did not belong. They were told that they could not speak for themselves. But here we are today, where a person belonging to those very people is speaking openly, as the holder of the highest office in the judiciary of the country," he said.

"Complete derailment": Manickam Tagore criticises Bihar govt over living situation of students

New Delhi [India], June 12 (ANI): Congress MP Manickam Tagore slammed the double-engine government in Bihar over the 'complete derailment' of living conditions for students from the marginalised communities residing in hostels of the state. He said that Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition (LoP) Rahul Gandhi had mentioned that the 'lack of amenities' in a Bihar hostel he visited and highlighted the delays in post-matric scholarships for students coming from the marginalised sections of society. 'LoP Rahul Gandhi has raised a very genuine issue. It is the issue of the (students from) backward classes, extremely backward classes, scheduled caste, and scheduled tribe and their hostel. The double-engine government of Modi and Nitish Kumar has completely derailed. We can see the hostel and the conditions of the students who are living there. Rahul Gandhi wrote it very clearly in that letter,' Tagore told ANI. Tagore focused on the importance of public spaces like a hostel, where students seek opportunities for their future. He hoped that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would act on the issue raised by Rahul Gandhi, instead of engaging in politics over the same. 'Hope the PM acts on it, but doesn't do politics on it. Let us understand that hostels are the places where we are going to give the kind of opportunities to the extremely backward class, most backward class, scheduled caste and scheduled tribe students, who are going to be the future of India. The quality of their hostel has to be improved, and I hope the PM acts on it and asks the CM and others to act on it in other states also,' the Congress MP added. Earlier, Gandhi wrote to PM Modi, claiming delays in post-matric scholarships for students from marginalised communities. The letter came following Rahul Gandhi's recent visit to a hostel in Bihar, where students complained, among other things, about alleged lack of mess facilities. 'I request you to resolve two critical issues that hinder education opportunities for the 90 per cent of students who are from marginalised communities. Firstly, the conditions in residential hostels for students from Dalit, ST, EBC, OBC and minority communities are deplorable. During a recent visit to Ambedkar Hostel in Darbhanga, Bihar, students complained about single rooms which 6-7 students were forced to share, unhygienic toilets, unsafe drinking water, lack of mess facilities, and no access to libraries or the internet,' Rahul Gandhi said in his letter dated June 10. The Congress MP further said, 'Secondly, post-matric scholarships for students from marginalised communities are plagued by delays and failures. For example, in Bihar, the scholarship portal was non-functional for three years no student received a scholarship in 2021-22. Even thereafter, the number of Dalit students receiving scholarships fell by nearly half, from 1.36 lakh in FY23 to 0.69 lakh in FY24. Students further complain that the scholarship amounts are insultingly low,' the letter added. The Lok Sabha LoP suggested that the government should take two actions to overcome these difficulties. The letter read, 'While I have cited examples from Bihar, these failures are widespread across the country. I urge the government to immediately take two actions to remedy these failures: Audit every hostel for students from Dalit, ST, EBC, OBC and minority communities to ensure good infrastructure, sanitation, food, and academic facilities; and allocate adequate funds to address deficiencies. Disburse post-matric scholarships on time, increase scholarship amounts, and improve execution by working closely with state governments.' (ANI)
