
How are letters of credit helping Chinese exporters pivot to home market amid trade war?
After the United States imposed so-called reciprocal tariffs on imports from China in April, Beijing took steps to help Chinese exporters sell their products domestically.
In addition to the staging of product promotion events across the country and the offering of fiscal and financial incentives, Beijing also encouraged the increased use of letters of credit (L/Cs) to help such businesses switch focus to the domestic market.
What is a domestic letter of credit?
A letter of credit, also known as a documentary credit in the US, is widely used in international trade. It is a financial tool, presented in document form, that serves as a guarantee to the seller that the agreed amount of money, services or goods will be paid by the buyer in time.
The domestic version has similar functions, helping to ensure payment security and enhance credit, both major concerns for many Chinese firms.
The payment period for domestic L/Cs, which can be issued by major Chinese banks, is generally one year.
While international L/Cs can only be used in transactions involving physical goods, domestic ones can also be used in the trade in services.

Chinese carmaker GAC's electric-van unit takes aim at Ford and Stellantis in Europe
A commercial-vehicle subsidiary of China's state-owned carmaker GAC Group has its sights set on Europe, where it hopes its electric vans can lure corporate buyers away from petroleum-powered models built by the likes of Ford and Stellantis. It aims to grab 10 per cent of the European market, where more than 1.7 million vehicles of this type are sold each year for public transport, goods delivery, emergency services and commuting. 'Electric commercial vehicles have an overwhelming advantage over petrol rivals because of electricity's lower cost than gasoline,' he said. 'Our van will compete against six to seven rivals there, and we think it's reasonable to target a 10 per cent share.' Established in late 2023 and based, like GAC, in Guangzhou in southern China's Guangdong province, the company is displaying its prototype models in Hong Kong at the International Automotive & Supply Chain Expo, which ends on Sunday. Miraco's battery-powered vans can go as far as 350km on a single charge. Xiao said the company also planned to offer autonomous-driving systems so that its vans could vie for a share of the robotaxi industry around the world. Its first production model, a minibus, would hit the Hong Kong market this year, he said.

HKEX to connect Asian start-ups with worldwide investors as exchange marks silver jubilee
Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing (HKEX) will broaden its role to connect companies across Asia with global capital through secondary listings in the city, the bourse operator's chairman said. HKEX is already linked with 20 of the world's stock exchanges through mutual recognition agreements, a technical accreditation that lets companies listed in Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Saudi Arabia and Abu Dhabi sell additional shares in Hong Kong. 'There is certainly interest among Asian companies to tap [global and mainland Chinese] funds in Hong Kong, indicating that Hong Kong can be a major regional connector [besides] its core position connecting China with the world,' Carlson Tong Ka-shing said in an interview this week after attending the World Federation of Exchanges board meeting in Singapore. How Hong Kong can shake off stagnant growth
Hong Kong's economic growth and resilience over the past two decades should serve as a source of pride. Real gross domestic product has grown at close to 3 per cent year on year over the past two decades, a robust figure for a developed services-based economy. But far more impressive is the way Hong Kong has rebounded rapidly and emerged even stronger after each crisis it has faced, whether it was the severe acute respiratory syndrome epidemic of 2003, the global financial crisis of 2008, or the economic slump of 2012. A closer look shows that Hong Kong's recent economic journey has really been a story comprising two chapters. Between 2004 and 2014, GDP grew by an average of 4.5 per cent, outpacing many of our regional peers. We all remember this period of fast-rising prosperity, fuelled by mainland China's economic boom and breakthrough policies such as the Individual Visit Scheme The past 10 years – chapter two in our story – are more nuanced, however, as Hong Kong's GDP grew by an average of just 1 per cent between 2015 and 2024. The social unrest of 2019 and the three-year period when Covid-19 gripped the city could be written off as one-time events. But the prolonged period of stagnant growth that we continue to live through feels materially different than previous slowdowns. mega-events , Much has been written about the challenges and potential solutions for Hong Kong's economy. Many of the city's recent investments in tourism technology and innovation are encouraging. Hong Kong's pivot will not be easy, though. While everyone understands we need to ensure that our economy is better aligned with the future, not with the past, the kind of change we need to effect requires an entirely new playbook. 'Business as usual' will not suffice. Understanding where future growth will emerge is crucial to Hong Kong's economic transformation.
