Eid invite turns into horror: 3 minors raped by 2 men in Goa hotel

Time of Indiaa day ago

In a shocking incident in Calangute, Goa, two men were arrested for allegedly raping three minor girls, aged 11 to 15, at a hotel. The accused, aged 19 and 21, had invited the girls under the pretext of celebrating Eid and a birthday.
PANAJI: An invitation to celebrate Eid on Saturday turned into a nightmare for three minor girls aged 11 to 15 - including two sisters - who were raped at a Calangute hotel by two friends.
Goa Police arrested both accused, aged 19 and 21.
The hotel owner - Rajat Chauhan, a native of Haryana - was also arrested later in the day for allegedly allowing the minor girls to stay without verification and consent from their parents, thereby facilitating the crime.
A few months ago, the 19-year-old accused befriended the 15-year-old girl on social media and began chatting with her. Last week, he invited her to celebrate Eid.
The 15-year-old - whom cops described as the 19-year-old accused's 'girlfriend' - left home with her 13-year-old sister and an 11-year-old friend on Saturday to meet the prime accused.
The prime accused and his friend (21) booked a room at a Calangute hotel, where the duo checked in with the three minors to stay overnight and celebrate the 15-year-old girl's birthday by cutting a cake.
Police seal hotel, arrest owner, will cancel licence too
Thereafter, the prime accused allegedly raped his 'girlfriend' while his friend raped the other two minors, repeatedly.
North Goa SP Rahul Gupta said cops received a complaint from the 15-year-old girl's family alleging that the minor sisters had left their residence on Saturday and did not return.
Meanwhile, the 11-year-old girl's kin filed another complaint, alleging that their minor daughter was missing, and they suspected that she may have gone out with the daughters of the first complainant.
'After meticulous efforts and after developing the information through reliable human sources and technical sources, all three minor survivors were rescued from a hotel in Calangute.
Two men present with them were apprehended and brought to the police station. During the inquiry at the hotel, it was revealed that the accused checked into two different hotel rooms,' said SP Gupta.
Goa police filed two separate FIRs in the case.
'During the investigation, both accused were arrested,' SP Gupta said.
Calangute police booked hotel owner Chauhan and hotel manager/receptionist Mansoor Shafi Peer, a native of J&K, for allegedly abetting the crime.
'We are sealing the hotel and moving for the cancellation of its licence,' SP Gupta said, adding that hotel management and owners will not be spared if they give a room to a child in the absence of any family or relatives accompanying him/her.
'This is in violation of Goa Children's Act. If any such violation is noticed in the future too, strict action will be taken,' he said.
(The victim's identity has not been revealed to protect her privacy as per Supreme court directives on cases related to sexual assault)

Dreamliner disaster: A long night of wait at the hospital for devastated families

Ahmedabad — The examination hall of the BJ medical college, behind the mortuary of Ahmedabad's civil hospital, was turned into a make-shift blood collection centre for DNA identification of the victims of Air India flight crash. Inside the heavily guarded mortuary are the bodies of those who died in the crash on Thursday afternoon. Throughout Thursday night and until early Friday, families from states as far as Manipur, and nearby Maharashtra came in to give their blood samples. Until 5 am on Friday, hospital officials said at least 200 people had given their samples. 'We are expecting families of foreign nationals to come tomorrow,' Kuldipsinh P Barot, from the medical college's forensic department, said. Inside the examination hall, was Imtiyaz Ali(42), who had come from Mumbai after hearing of the flight crash. On the Air India 171 flight to Gatwick, carrying 230 passengers and 12 crew members from Ahmedabad, there was his brother Javed, Javed's wife Mariyam and their two children — Amani and Zayn. Javed worked as a manager at a hotel in London. His brother, Imtiyaz spoke to HT after giving his blood sample. 'Javed had come on June 6 last for our mother's treatment and to celebrate EiD. The whole family was there on the ill fated plane. I haven't told my mother about it. We have not even seen the bodies. The doctors here told me to give my blood samples,' Imtiyaz said adding that he hoped for his brother to be alive. 'I am sending WhatsApp messages to his phone number. For some reason the messages are getting delivered. I am still getting two ticks to every message sent on his WhatsApp. So I know the chances are low but I wish he is and his family are alive,' Javed said. Police officers believe the phone may be among the hundreds of unclaimed bags that fell in the ground floor of the building near the airport wall when the plans crashed. Imtiyaz said his sister and her family were also returning to London on Thursday but had booked a different flight. 'It is destiny that Javed and his family were in that plane. He booked a plane via Ahmedabad. My sister booked a direct one. I have no idea what prompted Javed to book a flight via Ahmedabad. Somehow when I dropped him to the Mumbai airport last night, I did not ask him why he was going via Ahmedabad. Maybe it was the difference in the fares.' At the entrance of the hall, there are messages on the wall informing relatives that the blood sample report will be available only after 72 hours. Outside the hall, Pune resident Sameer Sheikh was unable to understand why he must wait for 72 hours. Irfan's younger son, Irfan Sameer Sheikh was a crew member. Sheikh has come with his family from Pune. 'The Air India executives went inside the mortuary and confirmed to me that my son's body is not charred. We showed our son's identity card to the Air India executives who confirmed that the body is not charred and they could recognise him. We cannot wait for 3 days. They should hand over the bodies of those who have been identified,' Sheikh said. Irfan, who had joined Air India two years ago, had last spoken to his mother before boarding the flight. 'He was to return day after tomorrow,'Sheikh said. At the blood collection examination hall, the help desk manned by hospital staff, medical students and local volunteers were busy through the night. For the medical students there, the task is even more traumatic because the dead include their juniors who lived in the hostel's mess next to the airport. The building next to the Ahmedabad airport boundary wall where the aircraft crashed, its rear parts stuck to the building, was the BJ medical college's boys hostel. The hostel is a 10-minute drive from the college and the examination hall where blood samples are being taken. 'Some families coming here are relatives of juniors whom we have seen at the college here. It is painful. Equally painful is having to take the blood sample of a 11 year old who has lost both his parents in the crash or an elderly man who has lost his son and daughter-in-law,' one PG student at the DNA blood sample collected desk said. More than 15 hours after the crash, families continued to walk in to give their samples at the medical college's examination hall. There is heavy security outside the mortuary. Volunteers and police teams are guiding every family to the DNA collection centre. 'Those who died in today's accident aren't just the passengers or those who were trapped the BJ Medical College's mess when the flight crashed. There were passers-by and shop keepers near the mess who too have died in the fire after the crash. Even at 5 am we are getting people coming from different parts of the state. The flames from the fuel of the plane engulfed the neighbourhood. The number of people who have died is more than what is being reported,' she said.

At ground zero, public glare on 16-sq-ft stall that sparked clash

1 2 Kolkata: A one-ft-tall tulsi sapling, planted at the site of a 16-sq-ft fruit stall, barely metres from the Rabindranagar Police Station, was at the root of the violence at Santoshpur-Akra in Maheshtala that continued for over six hours on Wednesday. The sapling was planted by a group of youths—regular faces at the 'Shubh Mangalbar Aarti' at a Bajrangbali temple beside the police station. They put up a small tulsi platform at the site nearly four days earlier and started offering prayers there. At this very spot, a fruit seller had his shop for years. Some residents of the area claimed the fruit shop had been shut for a couple of days for Eid and that the tulsi sapling was planted during this time. On returning, when the fruit seller discovered the plant, he and his wife reportedly reached out to some community elders and complained about it. The youths who had planted the tulsi, however, denied the allegation. "That is not true. When we were planting the sapling, he was standing nearby. But he later decided to create a false narrative and said he was being forced to chant 'Jay Shree Ram'. Unfortunately, the elders believed him without cross-checking the facts," said Shivam Mahato, a worker at the local municipality. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Unfriendliest Countries in the World, Ranked BigGlobalTravel Undo Mahato lives in a bustee, 200m from the police station. "I was present there when they were planting the sapling. Harimohan and Rahul took the initiative, and all of us helped them." Trouble broke out on Wednesday with a group of residents staging a protest by hurling bricks near the police station. Within minutes, a crowd gathered near the Bajrangbali temple, located on Santoshpur Road, which is lined with grocery stores, pharmacy stores, mobile shops, builders' offices, roadside eateries and two schools. The Akra-Santoshpur area has a mixed population, most of the minority community members being engaged in textile and garment-related trades. The situation had soon escalated with police resorting to lathicharge and firing tear gas shells. Multiple cops were injured and several vehicles were damaged. "We stay in a locality, where Hindus and Muslims have been living in harmony for decades. I was married into a neighbourhood, where most people were Hindus. But I never felt anything strange. Those who orchestrated the attacks on Wednesday were mindless hooligans, who belong to no community," said Tarannum Begum, who has been living in the area for more than three decades. Tarannum and her husband run a small eatery, which has not opened since Wednesday. "That shop is our only source of income. We don't know when life will return to normalcy." On both sides of Santoshpur Road, which leads to the Kankhuly area, indiscriminate attacks on homes and shops were evident. Bricks, which were used as "weapons" during the clash that had engulfed the area a day earlier, lay on the ground. Sk Akbar runs a barber's shop on the ground floor of an apartment near Bidhangar, Santoshpur area. In front of his shop, a number of cars, with broken windshields, were parked. "Teenagers and even children carried bricks in their hands. They pelted every building in the area and passing vehicles with those bricks. I feared for the residents who were desperately looking for help and stayed locked up inside their homes," Akbar said. For the next half an hour, Akbar and Shyamal Chakraborty—owner of a restaurant opposite Akbar's shop—stood on the road, pleading with the crowds not to attack anyone. On Thursday morning, residents' groups held meetings among themselves. "We are yet to figure out how all these things happened. The episode over a tiny tulsi plant attempted to shatter the trust we built over decades," said Arup Adhikari, a resident of a housing society in the area.
