Family of Scot missing in Portugal fly out to join search as they plead for sightings

Daily Mail3 days ago

The family of a Scot missing in Portugal have spoken of their heartbreak as they plead for locals to help in the search for him.
Greg Monks' worried parents, Lynne McGloin and Gordon Monks, as well as girlfriend Nicole Ashleigh Kelso, have travelled to Albufeira to join the hunt for the 38-year-old amid growing fears for his safety.
The plant mechanic from Glasgow was last seen in the early hours of Wednesday morning during the first night out of a five-day stag do he was on with friends.
Mr Monks, who is due to be a groomsman at the wedding of his friend, told pals he was heading back to his holiday apartment but has not been seen since.
Greg's sister, Jillian Monks, said: 'We are really struggling. We are living in a nightmare, it's sickening.'
Ms Monks said police have told her that her brother was last spotted on CCTV in the quieter residential area of Cerro de Águia – which is around four miles from the Novochoro Apartments he had checked into.
The hill with residential properties is also more than an hour's walk west of the Albufeira Strip, where Mr Monks is thought to have left his friends.
Ms Monks, who has had to remain in Glasgow with her two young children, said travelling out to Portugal had helped her parents feel that they are doing what they can to try to find him.
She has also set up a social media page dedicated to raising awareness of the search.
In one message posted she thanked British holidaymakers, expats and locals for their support, writing: 'As previously stated this is so unlike Greg and we are truly desperate for answers.
'I am now seeking help from residents of the Cerro de Águia area to please check any home cameras or doorbell footage between around 2am and 5am on Wednesday as police believe he was in the area around this time.
'Please share this if you know anyone in the area. Thank you for all the support.' She later added: 'Please, we are desperate.'
The family fear Mr Monks became lost in the unfamiliar surroundings and may have had an accident.
Hospitals have been checked without success but police are not thought to have yet carried out an exhaustive search of medical centres.
This would involve officers going round wards to check on patients admitted without proper identification.
Ms Monks has described her brother as a 'really hard worker' and a 'quiet guy', whose disappearance immediately 'threw up a red flag'.
She said he has a Thor-type Viking unfinished tattoo at the top of his right arm which would be visible if he was wearing a vest top or had no shirt on.
Ms Kelso is said to have checked through Mr Monks' case to see what was missing. As such, the family believe he was wearing a navy blue Nike shorts and top set when he disappeared.
A GoFundMe appeal set up on behalf of the family to help support the search had reached more than £14,700 yesterday afternoon.
Mr Monks' other sister, Carlyn, also pleaded with people online yesterday as she shared the family's appeal for help.
She wrote: 'Please keep sharing and help get my brother home.'

Greg Monks: Family appeal for information after Scottish man goes missing on stag do in Portugal

The family of a Scottish man who went missing on a stag do in Portugal have urged police to ramp up their efforts to find him. Greg Monks, 38, from Glasgow, was last seen in Albufeira in the early hours of Wednesday morning, on the first night of a five-day stag do. His parents and his girlfriend flew out to Portugal to help with the search the next day, but have not found any recent sightings of him. Speaking to The UK Tonight with Sarah-Jane Mee, Mr Monks's sisters Jillian and Carlyn said they are "waiting for answers". "As a family, we're worried sick," Carlyn added. "It's just so unlike him, but myself and Jillian are just trying to hold each other up back home." Jillian then said: "He deserves to be found, he deserves to be looked for, we need him home. "He's a big part of our family, and it's just unimaginable if he's just lying somewhere and we can't find him." Carlyn also called her brother "a real family man", while Jillian said that "I know that if he could phone us or reach out to us, he would, he wouldn't put us through this". Jillian said that after his friends told her "he's not come home from the night before", they asked "if there was any way we could track his phone or try and see what his location is". "I just couldn't believe it," she added. "It's not like him, he wouldn't normally do anything like this. "It had only been 12 hours since he was seen, but we were just so worried." She and his friends then tried to report Mr Monks as missing, but she said "it wasn't really taken seriously at first because it hadn't been that long". Jillian added that when her family arrived in Albufeira, police told them they had spotted Mr Monks twice on CCTV footage walking around the residential area. The area where the 38-year-old was last seen had a lot of "rough terrain" - including rocky outcrops and cliffs - and was more than an hour's walk from the Albufeira Strip, where he was thought to have left his friends. Jillian then said that while the police are looking for Mr Monks, "they just don't have the manpower" to search the area fully, and "it's been difficult for them to get the information" they are looking for. The sisters are calling for the police to use dogs to help track down Mr Monks, and have asked locals, "if you know anything, any tiny bit of information, get in touch".

Leah Williamson admits England failed to produce their best in defeat to Spain

The Lionesses missed out on a place in the Women's Nations League finals after Claudia Pina's brace earned Spain top spot in Group A3. Alessia Russo had put England ahead on her 50th international appearance, despite Spanish players protesting that Salma Paralluelo had been fouled in the build-up. But second-half substitute Pina proved to be the difference with two goals in the space of 10 minutes booking Spain's place in October's semi-finals. What it means 🙌 Netting on her 50th cap 👊 — Lionesses (@Lionesses) June 3, 2025 England had come into the game on the back of a 6-0 win over Portugal and with the European Championship starting next month, Williamson believes there are 'tweaks' to be made. 'I think in the second half they pressed a bit higher, we struggled, we couldn't keep the ball as well as we had done in the first half. We didn't really have any real threat,' Williamson told ITV Sport. 'Under that much pressure against a top side, sometimes that's what happens, they get to you and win the game. 'I think especially first half was a great display, but for the most part we looked solid and we felt solid. 'We feel good, there's just tweaks that need to be made and it's disappointing because that's a competitive fixture and that's an important campaign to us going forward with rankings and seedings. 'I think you saw maybe the best of us the previous game and just slightly off it today.' Claudia Pina struck twice for Spain (Bradley Collyer/PA) England boss Sarina Wiegman believes her team showed signs of threat throughout the first half. 'Very intense game. Of course we know that they're very tight on the ball,' she added. 'I think we did well, after the first half they had a little more of the ball, but saw we had the ball a lot too. 'I think we could've been a bit tighter and patient in the first half too, but you could see where we could harm them. I think a couple more times we would not have been offside or play a little quicker behind or switch play quicker, we could've harmed them even more. 'Second half they started really quick, they did something different and pressed really high. We had some trouble to get out of the press and keep the ball. Sarina Wiegman's attention now switches to the Euros (Bradley Collyer/PA) 'Of course they brought Pina in and she was very secure with her shots.' England's attention now turns to Euro 2025 and Wiegman is set to announce her squad for the tournament this week. The team play Jamaica in a friendly on June 29 before their Euros campaign begins against France in Zurich on July 5. Wiegman added: 'What you've seen this week is that we had a very good week. Players coming back from injuries, players fighting for positions or minutes or selection and I think that's very positive. 'Some will keep training because they need to train, others will take a couple of days off. Then we move forward and come together get ready for Jamaica, then for France.'
