Martinelli scores 28, Northwestern beats Minnesota 72-64 to begin Big Ten tourney
Nick Martinelli scored 28 points to help No. 13 seed Northwestern beat No. 12 seed Minnesota 72-64 on Wednesday to begin the Big Ten Tournament.
Northwestern (17-15) earned its first conference tournament win since 2022 for a chance to play No. 5 Wisconsin in Thursday's second round. The Wildcats lost to then-No. 17 Wisconsin 75-69 on Feb. 1.
Five Northwestern players scored during a 12-3 run to begin the second half to go ahead by double digits, 44-32, for the first time in the game. The Wildcats stayed ahead by at least nine points until Mike Mitchell Jr. scored five straight points to get Minnesota within 67-60 with 45 seconds remaining.
Martinelli and Matthew Nicholson each went 1 of 2 at the stripe down the stretch, and K.J. Windham went 3 of 4 to keep Northwestern ahead by multiple possessions.
Ty Berry added 14 points, Jordan Clayton had 11 and Windham finished with 10 for Northwestern. Martinelli, averaging a league-high 20.2 points per game, was 12 of 22 from the field. Martinelli was just 4 of 10 at the free-throw line as the Wildcats finished 12 of 22.
Dawson Garcia led Minnesota (15-17) with 22 points and Mitchell added 11 points. The Golden Gophers lost five of their last six games to end the season.
Northwestern and Minnesota were meeting for the third time in the last six tournaments, all in the 12-seed vs. 13-seed game.

The Vikings make sense in that regard in several ways, as the team has one lockdown cornerback in Byron Murphy but lost its other two starters at the position during the offseason. Brian Flores also plays an aggressive style of defense that led to a league-leading 24 interceptions by the Vikings last season. Alexander could potentially rebuild his value in a big way statistically in such a scenario, while also playing on a team with legitimate playoff/Super Bowl aspirations and one that will afford him at least two opportunities to inflict direct revenge on his former employer during division play. Kay Adams of FanDuel TV's "Up & Adams" had similar ideas on her Monday broadcast. "My vote for landing spot for one Jaire Alexander would be the Vikings, of course," Adams said. 3-sport athlete at Maple Grove proves benefits of cross-training heading into 8th state tournament
It's state tournament season right now, and one Maple Grove, Minnesota, track athlete is hoping to lead her relay team to school history in the track and field state tournament. But she's already proven she's a standout, making it to eight state tournaments in three different sports. "The second I stepped on the track, I wanted to keep coming every day," said Abbey Oakland, senior relay distance runner at Maple Grove High School. Running distance is the best fit for Oakland, as it not only feeds her competitive spirit, but it also feeds into her training for the other sports she plays, like soccer. "In the fall [for soccer season], I was always super fit and ready from track, and I just think that helped a lot," said Oakland. Then in the winter, she switches gears again to hockey. "It just makes me excited for each season, and I don't feel any burnout," said Oakland. Being a three-sport athlete is something rare these days, especially for Oakland, who has gone to the Minnesota State High School League state tournament in each of her sports. "It helps me be very versatile," said Oakland. "I just feel like I see the sports from a wider angle." Oakland's distance coach, Hannah Hempe, sees big benefits from that versatility in her athletes. "Running, it can be the same thing over and over. How you approach a race might have some of the same strategies, so she hears so many different strategies both in soccer and hockey about how to approach competition," said Hempe. The Maple Grove Crimson girls relay runners now have their sights set on a first for the school, breaking into the state's top three finishers. "We'll be right in there with them, and I know all the girls in my relay will battle until the end," said Oakland. "I know [her relay teammates] would love to leave Abbey [the only senior] on that note with that top three finish," said Hempe. The track and field state tournament begins Thursday.
