Tax credit for gun training, storage heads to GA state senate
ATLANTA (WJBF) – Several groups are pushing lawmakers to toughen gun laws in Georgia, especially after last year's school shooting at Apalachee High School.
State house lawmakers passed House Bill 79 which would establish a tax credit program for up to $300 per taxpayer for those who purchase firearm secure storage devices or complete a firearm safe handling course. Eligible expenses include gun safes, trigger locks and cable locks, and will be capped at $10 million annually for the state.
Some democrats say that's merely not enough, and want a law that would require adults to lock up guns at home when their children are there to avoid accidental shootings or having access to guns.
'Another devastating group is 30% of firearm deaths under age 19 is suicide and any one of us will be devasted that a child used a firearm to end their life,' said State Representative, Mark Newton.
The bill states that each taxpayer can only receive the tax credit once in their lifetime and if approved by senate lawmakers, it would run from 2026 through 2031.

‘Grinch' who allegedly stole, prowled cars on Christmas in Camas arrested
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Months after a person was caught on camera stealing a car and prowling other vehicles last Christmas, Camas police announced on Wednesday that they have made an arrest in the case. Twenty-three-year-old Jorge Ayala was charged with auto theft, possession of a stolen vehicle, nine counts of vehicle prowl and third-degree theft. According to police, the crimes occurred between 8:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. on Christmas morning 2024 when a dark gray Mazda CX3 with Washington license plate BSD5166 was stolen by a 'Grinch' from the Woodburn Neighborhood then used to drive around the area to prowl other vehicles.
