Thief who murdered Amazon driver while stealing van jailed for at least 30 years

Independent14-03-2025

A thief who murdered a 'hard working' Amazon delivery driver who was trying to stop him stealing his van has been jailed for life.
Claudiu Carol Kondor, 42, was delivering parcels in Leeds last year when 'career criminal' Mark Ross, 32, climbed into his van and started to drive away, a court heard.
Determined not to let Ross steal his livelihood, Mr Kondor clung onto the vehicle for half-a-mile as the defendant hit speeds of up to 60mph and swerved from side to side before hitting two parked cars, all in an effort to knock him from the van.
Mr Kondor died from head and chest injuries from the second crash, the court heard.
On Friday, Ross was jailed at Leeds Crown Court for a minimum term of 30 years.
Mr Kondor's devastated fiancee said he had dreamed of owning his own van and bought it just three weeks before he was killed.
In a victim impact statement read to the court, Mariana Gheorghe, who said she had been 'forced to return to Romania with a broken heart' after his death, described Mr Kondor as a 'man of integrity and hard work'.
She said he had a difficult upbringing in Romania and moved to Italy at the age of 19, doing various jobs and working as a volunteer to help earthquake victims in 2009.
Ms Gheorghe said Mr Kondor came to England in 2019 and worked as a delivery driver and security guard, realising his dream of owning his own van in July 2024.
Her statement said: 'Of all his jobs he liked delivering the most. He enjoyed meeting people, delivering parcels on time and correctly.
'When he finished work each day he was happy to say he had done his best.'
Ms Gheorghe went on to say: 'I don't know how I will live without him, everything seems so difficult to me. I'm still shocked and confused about everything that happened.
'Both me and Claudiu were the kind of people who like to work, who built a life on dreams and honest work on their own.'
Ross had pleaded guilty to manslaughter, but denied murdering Mr Kondor, claiming he was unaware of him hanging onto the van and that speed bumps had caused him to lose control of the vehicle.
On Wednesday, a jury of 11 found him guilty of murder by a majority of 10 to one.
Sentencing him on Friday, judge Mr Justice Goss said: 'Claudiu Carol Kondor must have been terrified in the last 45 seconds of his life as you ignored his pleas to stop and drove faster, dragging him along the road, causing him mental and physical suffering.'
Jurors heard Mr Kondor was delivering parcels for Amazon in the Armley area of Leeds on August 20 last year using his own silver Transit van – which was full of parcels he had collected from an Amazon depot.
While he was away from his vehicle delivering a parcel, Ross, who lived nearby and had gone out to buy cannabis, climbed into the driver's seat and started to drive the van away, the court heard.
Mr Kondor tried to stop him by opening the front nearside passenger door of the van and attempting to climb in.
The court heard this did not stop Ross driving away, with Mr Kondor hanging onto the moving van through an open door.
Witnesses described Mr Kondor's legs dragging on the ground as he clung onto the inside of the open door, with one woman saying she heard him shouting 'Help'.
Prosecutor John Harrison KC told jurors: 'After speeding and swerving failed to get rid of Mr Kondor, the defendant deliberately drove into collision with two parked cars.'
He said Ross turned the steering wheel towards a black car parked on the side of the road, and when that did not knock Mr Kondor free from the van, he 'tried again'.
'The second collision was with a blue car which caused damage to the van, to the parked car and most significantly, caused fatal head and chest injuries to Mr Kondor,' Mr Harrison said.
Mr Kondor, who lived in Sheffield, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The court heard after driving away, Ross met up with some other people and the contents of the van were removed.
In his closing speech, Mr Harrison said 'career criminal' Ross must have realised Mr Kondor, who was wearing a high-viz jacket, was there, but made the choice that the driver was 'expendable'.
Ross, of Conference Road, Armley, told the jury he had been involved in stealing vans previously, but said he had 'never been involved in anything like this before', adding 'I would have stopped the van and run off if I had known he was there'.
He was given a concurrent sentence of six months for a separate offence of theft after stealing cashmere jumpers from a lorry.

More info An associate of Mark Richardson is understood to have been targeted for a third time by henchmen working for Dubai-based gangster Ross McGill. A Transit van linked to Richardson's associate, Paddy Beatson, was torched in the early hours of Monday morning. The incident happened outside his home on Niddrie Marischal Crescent, reports the Daily Record. Only days before, Beatson taunted his rivals - known as Tamo Junto (TMJ). In a post online, he urged them to 'come and get him'. He wrote: "I'm home, if anyone's looking for me. I've never once ran. I've never even left my bit, other than to take my boy on a holiday. "If anyone wants it with me today, get on me. I won't be roped into a slagging match or arguments with fake accounts. I don't do that." (Image: Daily Record) The Ford van at Beatson's home was torched at around 4am on Monday. Half a mile away - and at the same time -a Range Rover believed to be owned by another associate of Richardson's was firebombed at a property on the capital's Campion Road. Cops are treating both incidents as suspicious. Images taken in the aftermath show the burnt out shells of both vehicles. Tamo Junto were quick to claim responsibility for the attacks in a video. Footage shared by the gang shows flames bursting out of the Range Rover and the Transit van. In one clip a hooded figure can be seen standing with an accelerant canister before he backs away from the fireball. The video plays the song Two Tribes by 80s pop group Frankie Goes to Hollywood and it ends with emojis of a black pawn chess piece and a sand timer appearing side by side. The property on Campion Road, where the Range Rover was torched, was also on attacked before on May 10 - the same day Ross McGill "rejected a truce offer" with his enemies. Pictures taken at the time showed windows boarded up in the wake of the attack after men were filmed kicking in the door. Homes, cars and businesses belonging to associates of Richardson have been hit in a series of firebombings and shootings. Machete thugs also pounced on his close ally David McMillan Snr at his home on Pitcairn Grove in the city last month. Police said they are treating the attack on the 56-year-old as attempted murder. In April, a carpet and flooring unit owned by Daniel enforcer Craig "Rob Roy" Gallagher was torched in Bishopbriggs. And in Milton, a female pensioner and 12-year-old boy were injured after hoods stormed their home looking for a high-ranking member of the Daniel family. McGill's men went on to target the home of Steven 'Bonzo' Daniel, as well as the properties of his mum Annette, uncle Norman and sister Kelly 'Bo' Green. Last month, two men were attacked with a machete at a garage owned by Robert Daniel in East Kilbride. Police Scotland later released a statement to say the force currently has 'no intelligence' to link the shootings in Fuengirola to the ongoing turf war, or that the shootings were organised from within Scotland - but underworld sources have claimed that is not the case as fingers were pointed at rival hoods. Just minutes after the double assassination, a posh mansion in the Renfrewshire village of Bridge of Weir was torched. Last week TMJ - who have been known for showcasing their attacks online - took credit for the firebombing as they released a picture of the blaze alongside a chilling threat. Michael Ross' lawyer describes Orkney Assassin as 'well-mannered' and 'gentle' in Prime Video documentary

Michael Ross was convicted of the murder of Shamsuddin Mahmood in 2008, with his lawyer opening up on the convicted killer in a new Prime Video documentary. Convicted murderer Michael Ross has been described as "gentle" by his lawyer in a new one-off documentary. The Orkney Assassin: Murder In The Isles premiered on Prime Video on Sunday, June 8, providing audiences insight from officers, journalists, witnesses, and Ross's parents regarding the murder of Shamsuddin Mahmood. ‌ In 2008, Ross faced conviction for the murder of the Indian restaurant waiter, which occurred 14 years prior and recieved a life sentence. ‌ Throughout the trial, Donald Findlay provided Ross' defence, but as disclosed in the documentary, with more than 10 years remaining until parole eligibility, Ross sought new representation. Lawyer Aamer Anwar was hired for the position but expressed his initial doubts about taking on the case. Anwar commented in the documentary: "So when it came in, there was some healthy cynicism. "'Why me? You know my reputation. You know I fight injustice, human rights and on race' but they said that's exactly the reason why Michael wanted me to have a look at the case. "And when I met Michael, he was well mannered, considered, gentle." ‌ Ross, since his sentencing, has consistently proclaimed his innocence and has made three attempts to escape prison, the most recent being a 2018 incident where he tried to scale a fence. Anwar added: "And the fact that in all these years, he's maintained his innocence. "That always strikes me when somebody refuses to take the easy option and go 'you know what, I'm guilty' to try and get out earlier. "But he's refused to do that, he says he cannot do that, he insists he's an innocent man. And it's never ended."
