Manipur's Suman eager to cement her place in the Indian women's hockey team
As the Indian women's hockey team begins their European leg of FIH Pro League against Australia at Lee Valley Hockey & Tennis Centre in London on Saturday, one player who will be more than eager to showcase her skills is Manipur's Suman Devi Thoudam.
After breaking into the senior team as a teenager way back in 2017 during a Test series against Belarus in Bhopal under the then coach Sjoerd Marijne, she went onto play 12 matches including the 2018 Asian Champions Trophy where India finished second behind South Korea. She played few more games after that but couldn't ever cement her place in the squad and last played during the 2022 Pro League against the Netherlands in Bhubaneswar.
However, she has made a comeback into the squad after three years and made her presence felt during India's tour of Australia last month where the Harendra Singh-coached side played five matches and won one.
Speaking about her return, Suman said, "During the first game, I felt a bit nervous. But I had played under Harendra sir earlier and he gave me a lot of confidence. Sushila Chanu has also supported me a lot at the camp."

And the person who was the happiest seeing her return to the team was her father. A hockey player himself during his youth at the local club level, Thoudam Anand Singh used to wear his daughter's jersey and proudly stroll around the neighbourhood. "He stopped doing it though after I was dropped from the team. He had told me then that he would wear them after I made it to the team again," added Suman.
A carpenter by profession till a few years back, Anand, hopefully, has started wearing them now and will be watching the Pro League games from Imphal home, where he resides along with his wife.
However, this remarkable return wouldn't have been possible but for the coaches at National Centre of Excellence (NCOE) in Delhi, who gave Suman all the support she needed.
"After I was dropped from the squad, I trained hard and worked a lot on my fitness but never did I feel that hockey was over for me. I obviously felt sad but I kept telling myself that I have enough time in my hands to make a comeback," added Suman, who also landed a job in Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) in 2022, much to the relief of her family.
This struggle though wasn't anything compared to when she first came to Madhya Pradesh Hockey Academy in 2014 and struggled to get accustomed. "I couldn't understand Hindi even a bit, I used to feel nervous and scared, felt like crying and wanted to go back home," recollected the defender, who also led the U-21 side in two invitational meets in 2019.
Luckily she persevered and today she has another chance to prove to everybody what she is capable of. And what better opponents to do it against than Australia.

FIH Pro League: India suffer fifth straight loss, go down 3-2 against Australia
Antwerp (Belgium): The Indian men's hockey team suffered another heartbreak as they slumped to defeat despite taking a 2-0 lead as the Kookaburras bounced back to prevail 3-2 in the ongoing FIH Hockey Pro League 2024/25 here in Antwerp on Saturday. Following four successive narrow losses in the European leg, the Indian team, sans their captain Harmanpreet Singh, had a dream start against Australia until they floundered in the final quarter, allowing their opponents to come back. It was goals by Nathan Ephraums (42'), Joel Rintala (56'), and Tom Craig (60') that put Australia ahead, while Abhishek (8', 35') scored a double for India. It was an entertaining opening quarter with India taking the lead as early as the eighth minute of the game. The initial few minutes saw both teams trade chances in the circles until a perfect pass from the midfield by Manpreet Singh, who is on 399 international caps, to Abhishek positioned at the top of the circle fetched India a crucial 1-0 lead. Abhishek did well to beat the defender to find the net. Only two minutes later, Australia threatened to equalise when James Collins won Australia's first penalty corner with some clever work in the circle, finding the Indian defender's foot. But Suraj Karkera has shown great promise in this tournament, standing firm in the post and making a brilliant stop with his foot. He was kept busy in the following minutes as the Australian attack raided the circle with multiple chances, but the Mumbai lad was up to the task. India was cautious in the second quarter. Did well to defend the 1-0 lead and also came close to doubling it when experienced Mandeep Singh set up Manpreet at the goalmouth with a quick-fire cross pass, but Manpreet couldn't quite get the right deflection. Though Australia turned the tables on India in the third quarter, pushing for that elusive first goal, India doubled the lead in the 35th minute, thanks to the handy work of Sukhjeet Singh, who made a clever assist to Abhishek. Adding a double to his name in this match, Abhishek made no mistake in pumping it past the Australian goalie Ashleigh Thomas. Australia eventually did find an opportunity to score through Nathan Ephraums with a fine assist by Tom Craig. The final quarter was nervy for Indian hockey fans with Australia mustering back-to-back PCs, but Suraj Karkera was on top of his game to keep Australia at bay. With a little over five minutes left for the final hooter, Australia won another PC and this time, they equalised with Joel Rintala's conversion. They extended the lead in the 60th minute with another PC well-struck by Tom Craig, handing India another heartbreaking loss on the trot. India will again take on Australia at the same venue on Sunday before concluding their tour with two games against host Belgium on June 21 and 22, respectively.

South Africa clinch World Test Championship, beat Australia by five wickets
South Africa managed to pull off a famous victory by winning the World Test Championship title at the iconic Lord's cricket ground on Saturday. Temba Bavuma's men crossed the line with five wickets to spare against Australia. Aiden Markram almost saw South Africa's chase home with a calm and reassuring 136 before departing with South Africa needing just six runs to win. Both teams had gone to bed on Friday with South Africa on 213/2 in the 2nd innings, the target of 282 very much in reach. But they lost talismanic captain Temba Bavuma's wicket early on for 66 runs. South Africa had opted against retiring him hurt on Day 3 of the Test after he was struck by a hamstring injury. Bavuma was on six runs when the injury occurred, but added 60 runs to that before walking off after being dismissed. As It Happened: SA beat AUS on day 4 of WTC Final South Africa were handed another scare when Tristan Stubbs was dismissed by Mitchell Starc for 8 runs with the Proteas at 241/4. South Africa were cautious in their chase on Saturday, but ensured that there was no finish line blues. Batting first, Australia managed to post 212 runs on the board in the first innings, with Beau Webster top-scoring with 72 and Steve Smith adding another 66. Kagiso Rabada had claimed five wickets in the first innings, with Marco Jansen adding three more. South Africa mustered the worst reply it could, folding up for a paltry total of 138 with David Bedingham top-scoring with 45 while skipper Temba Bavuma managed 36. In their second innings, Australia encountered their own slump which saw them touching 73 runs for the loss of seven wickets. That's when Alex Carey (43) and Mitchell Starc (58) added some runs for their bowling to defend in the final innings. Eventually, though, it proved to be too little.
