Laois rightly big favourites for Joe McDonagh Cup clash with Kerry

The bad news? This isn't the game you'd choose if you were looking to showcase Kerry hurling to the widest possible audience, as chances are there will probably be a wide margin between the sides come the finish.
Laois come into the game off the back of a 39-point victory over Down in the previous round, while the Kingdom suffered a 19-point defeat at the hands of Carlow.
Down, remember, are the Division 2 kingpins, while the Kingdom didn't even reach the final of the same competition. Chances are, then, that this could be another chastening enough experience for the green and gold in the small ball code.
The way the Joe McDonagh Cup has played out so far it's been pretty obvious that Carlow and Laois are a cut above the rest. And it's been a good wee while since the Kingdom ruffled the feathers of the O'Moore County in league or championship.
Indeed, when the sides met last year in Austin Stack Park the visitors on that occasion ran out very comfortable winners, 1-25 to 0-18, a ten-point margin between them come the finish.
And, being honest about it, if John Griffin's men were to emerge from Portlaoise next Sunday with a defeat of a similar margin they'd be fairly satisfied by a job well done.
The likelihood is Griffin and his management team won't risk Pádraig Boyle, Shane Conway and Daniel Collins for the game, given the importance of the final two games of the competition (away to Down, at home to Westmeath) when their survival in the grade will be decided.
That said when it comes to Kerry hurling, as we're fond of saying, expect the unexpected. We would be quite surprised if they were able to turn over Laois this weekend, but stranger things have happened.
Still Laois are formidable, a rejuvenated force under Tommy Fitzgerald, with players of the quality of Lee Cleere, Paddy Purcell, Aidan Corby, Tomás Keyes, Pádraig Delaney, Charles 'Cha' Dwyer, and Fiachra Fennell.
Even without old reliables like Enda Rowland and Stephen 'Picky' Maher, Kerry are going to find Laois a seriously tough ask. Laois, while they were relegated from Division 1B, spent the spring-time playing at a much higher level.
The bookmakers have Laois installed as overwhelming favourites for this one, nothing we've seen suggests they've called this one wrong.
Verdict: Laois

O'Leary and O'Shea star as Kerry open All-Ireland defence with win over Mayo

The 42 Kerry 0-13 Mayo 1-4 Dan Kearney reports from Austin Stack Park DANIELLE O'LEARY STRUCK for four points off the bench and Siofra O'Shea also hit four as TG4 All-Ireland champions Kerry overcame a spirited Mayo at Austin Stack Park in this Group 2 Round 1 encounter. Kerry, playing with a very strong breeze into the Dunnes Stores end of the ground, made the brighter start and found themselves four points to the good after 13 minutes. Mixing long and short ball into O'Shea in the full forward line, the hosts got off the mark 35 seconds in when midfielder Anna Galvin pointed from distance. Caoimhe Evans found O'Shea with a long ball and she punched over in the sixth minute before adding her second two minutes later following a sweeping move. Aishling O'Connell then popped over through the middle to put Kerry four ahead. Mayo finally started to get their hands on the ball around the middle of the field, with Erin Murray showing well, and their reward came in the 13th minute when a shot for a point from Hannah Reape fell short and was fielded inside by Clodagh Keane. Keane's initial effort was blocked by Emma Costello but the Knockmore player gathered the rebound and finished expertly past Mary Ellen Bolger. Kerry hit back with O'Shea's second point of the game, before Hannah Reape responded for the visitors. Carmody slotted over for Kerry, before Julia Gawalkiewicz made a smart save at the feet of the energetic O'Shea. Sinead Walsh then hit two brilliant individual points for Mayo before O'Shea struck for her third score of the half — and Kerry's third from outside the big arc — to see the hosts take a tentative 0-7 to 1-3 lead in at half time. O'Leary was introduced at half time and pointed a couple of minutes after a fine effort from Niamh Carmody, Kerry taking advantage of the yellow-carded Hannah Reape, who saw the sin bin following a charge into Carmody. Advertisement Walsh hit her third of the game from a free, but O'Leary responded for Kerry in the 40th minute with her second of the contest after good work from Ní Chonchúir and Anna Galvin to see Kerry lead by 0-10 to 1-4. The Kingdom scored three without reply during Reape's absence. O'Leary struck for her third and O'Shea added her fourth as a misfiring Mayo failed to add to to their second half single score. O'Leary then hit her fourth as Kerry finished comprehensive six-point winners. Kerry travel to play Munster rivals Cork next Saturday, while Mayo have a week off before entertaining the Rebels on 21 June. Westmeath demolish Laois to advance to Tailteann Cup quarter-finals

Westmeath have advanced to the quarter-finals of the Tailteann Cup after a surprisingly facile win against an off-colour Laois side in Mullingar. Nigel Harte put the home team ahead after a mere 15 seconds and Robbie Forde soon doubled this lead from a free. Ronan Coffey halved the deficit from a free, before Matthew Whittaker's powerful shot at the other end came back off the crossbar in the sixth minute, but his side still led by 0-04 to 0-03 with 13 minutes on the clock. The outstanding Sam McCartan took centre stage at the midpoint of the first half when he scored a quickfire brace of quality two-pointers from play. Westmeath's defending was very good at this juncture and Justin McNulty's charges were struggling to get in for scores. A rapid-fire brace of points from Brian Byrne and Kevin Swayne had the visitors within four points of their hosts, but Dermot McCabe's men finished the first half very strongly. A foul on the hard-working Shane Allen gave the hitherto-anonymous Luke Loughlin who, in fairness, had received a lot of pre-match attention from the Westmeath masseur, the opportunity to open his account by superbly converting the ensuing spot kick in the 33rd minute. After a neat point from Stephen Smith the hooter sounded, but Westmeath sensed the opportunity to increase their advantage and duly did so when skipper Ronan Wallace finished off a great move by finding the net from point-blank range. Wind-assisted Westmeath led by 2-12 to 0-07 at the interval. Laois needed a good start upon the resumption, but they never really threatened to make it into a real contest. Indeed, Westmeath had extended their advantage to 14 points (2-16 to 0-08) when Whittaker atoned for his earlier goal miss by scoring a wonderful individual three-pointer in the 42nd minute. The Lake County men went on to lead by 3-22 to 0-09 at the end of the third quarter. The O'Moore County outfit had a brief purple patch when they scored five points without reply between the 58th and 64th minutes, including their only two-pointer of the match from a free taken by goalkeeper Killian Roche. However, two more points from the best player on show, Sam McCartan, either side of a neat score by Kevin O'Sullivan preceded the full-time hooter. Westmeath strangely opted to play on and when Loughlin's goal attempt was blocked, Laois got a consolation goal from sub Jonah Kelly to round off a bitterly disappointing display from their perspective. Westmeath: Conor McCormack; Jack Geoghegan, Sam Smyth, Jamie Gonoud; Joe Moran (0-01), Ronan Wallace (1-05, 1 2pt), Sam McCartan (0-08, 2 2pt); Brian Guerin, Shane Allen (0-01); Matthew Whittaker (1-01), Kevin O'Sullivan (0-02), Nigel Harte (0-01); Luke Loughlin (1-02, 1-0 pen, 2ptf), Stephen Smith (0-02, 0-01f), Robbie Forde (0-02, 0-01f).
