Scots can call on 'superpower' v Germany

BBC News01-04-2025

Uefa Women's Nations League A: Scotland v GermanyVenue: Tannadice Park, Dundee Date: Friday, 4 April Kick-off: 19:35 BSTCoverage: Watch on BBC Alba & iPlayer, listen on BBC Radio Scotland Extra & Sounds, live text commentary on the BBC Sport website & app
Sophie Howard believes Scotland's "superpower" will be required if Germany are to be beaten in Friday's Women's Nations League meeting at Tannadice. The Leicester City defender, born and raised in Germany to a Scottish mother and an English father, is not just fluent in German but fully versed in the development of the German game at club and international level. That familiarity, as well as the fact the Germans may not know so much about the Scots, could help interim head coach Michael McArdle's side get the better of the team ranked third in the world."I've got an advantage in that I know a lot of the players," Howard explained.
"I've seen them for many, many years and I believe they don't know as much about us as we do about them and that can be our superpower on Friday."You always go in wanting to win, why do we play football otherwise? We're fully aware a lot has to go right for us to come out on top."I'm convinced we can perform and compete with Germany, a top nation. We just need to be at our best."Scotland have lost their past three matches to Finland, Austria and The Netherlands and could presumably do with a morale-boosting win.The significant scalp of Germany would certainly fit into that category, although Howard is not getting too preoccupied with results at all cost."What we need is to build internally," she said. "What happens externally with results is sometimes secondary because we need to build on performances to make this sustainable."A one-off result won't solve problems and won't bring back belief. A result can help you but we see every day what we put in and that is more valuable than anything else."

Liverpool eyeing move for £100m PSG forward after record Florian Wirtz deal

Liverpool do not intend to stop their summer spending after signing Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz, eyeing up another big-money transfer. The Reds are doing anything but resting on their laurels after their impressive Premier League title win last season. Frimpong has already been brought in from Bayer Leverkusen in a £29.5m deal, while Wirtz is set to make the same trip in a club record signing due to be worth around £127m. The move for the German is a signal of intent from Liverpool, beating the likes of Manchester City and Bayern Munich to his signature, and they are ready to lay down another marker in the transfer market. The Sun report that Paris Saint-Germain forward Bradley Barcola is still a target for the Premier League champions this summer. The 22-year-old is also on Bayern's radar, in fact he has been labelled their number one target, but the Reds are keen to beat the German giants to him just as they did with Wirtz. The Frenchman has been valued at £100m, although he has fallen down the pecking order at PSG, which is why interested parties are circling. The former Lyon man was on the bench for PSG's 5-0 demolition of Inter Milan in the Champions League final, only coming on for the last 27 minutes. He remained a regular in Luis Enrique's team as he made 58 appearances in all competitions over the campaign, just not necessarily in the starting XI. The front three of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Ousmane Dembele and Desire Doue has taken prominence and suggests Barcola could now be available with a huge bid. The Magpies do not want to sell their star striker and will only be moved by a bid in the region of £150m, which will be too much for the Reds after signing Wirtz. Barcola will become the more achievable target if Newcastle stick to their huge asking price for Isak. With a substantial spending spree going on at Anfield, the Reds also need to sell players this summer. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Caoimhin Kelleher have already left for Real Madrid and Brentford respectively, but there will need to be more outgoings. More Trending Darwin Nunez is available for transfer and expected to leave, while Liverpool will also consider bids for Diogo Jota and possibly Luis Diaz as Arne Slot revamps his front line. Al Hilal had a bid for Nunez rejected in January and remain interested in the Uruguayan, while Atletico Madrid and Napoli are both considering making offers. Luis Diaz has been continually linked with Barcelona this summer and the Reds turned down an approach, but the situation could still change. Tottenham, Aston Villa and Newcastle in race to sign £25m Man Utd star on loan

Tottenham, Aston Villa and Newcastle United are in the running to sign Jadon Sancho from Manchester United in the summer transfer window, according to reports. Chelsea confirmed on Wednesday that they are not taking up their £25 million permanent option to sign Sancho following his season-long stint at Stamford Bridge and have paid a £5m penalty fee to send him back to United. Sancho's future is now uncertain as it's understood that Ruben Amorim has no plans to integrate the 25-year-old into his squad for United's pre-season campaign. According to The Sun, Sancho has already attracted interest from three Premier League clubs with Spurs, Villa and Newcastle all keeping tabs on the winger's situation at Old Trafford. It's claimed that Villa will aim to secure a loan deal but United are looking for a permanent sale this summer. Chelsea, who is on a £300,000-a-week deal with United, had the option to sign Sancho permanently for a £25m fee but could not reach an agreement with the winger over personal terms. Meanwhile, Borussia Dortmund have all but ruled out the prospect of re-signing Sancho this summer. More Trending Dortmund signed Sancho from Manchester City for £8m in 2017 and the winger enjoyed the best seasons of his career with the Bundesliga club before his £73m move to United in 2021. Sancho has been linked with a return to Dortmund this summer but the German club's sporting director, Sebastian Kehl, says the club have other priorities. 'Of course, contact with Jadon is always there, in some way, because we have a very long history,' Kehl told Ruhr Nachrichten. 'But that's not an issue for us right now. We have other priorities at the moment, and that's why the Sancho issue may have been more talked about in the media than internally.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. England star details major difference between Thomas Tuchel and Gareth Southgate

Atletico Madrid midfielder Conor Gallagher played a handful of games for Thomas Tuchel when the German was his Chelsea manager and Gallagher was given his England debut by Gareth Southgate Conor Gallagher has outlined the main difference between Gareth Southgate and Thomas Tuchel after the new England manager oversaw a forgettable second international camp. Tuchel has come in for some fierce criticism following a hugely uninspiring 1-0 win over Andorra and a dispiriting 3-1 loss to Senegal at the City Ground. But Gallagher, who worked under Tuchel at Chelsea, is convinced the German will soon get it right. And he has detailed his impact on the training ground. ‌ 'I think Gareth is more chilled and takes a step back, whereas Thomas is full on with tactical stuff,' explained the Atletico Madrid midfielder. 'He's really helpful and really hands on in training. ‌ 'It's really exciting. A lot of the lads know Thomas already. I know him from Chelsea and obviously he's a world class manager and everyone's excited to see where we can go together.' While the players might be excited, the fans seem less so, booing the players from the field in the wake of the defeat at the hands of Senegal. And Gallagher admitted: 'I don't think we were great, if I'm being honest. "The manager was calm. He was obviously disappointed and not happy, but he was calm with us. He knows we could be a lot better. 'There's a lot of improvement to be made. It's a shame because we're away from each other for a few months now, whereas he would like to kind of fix the problem straight away, but he can't because that's how it is in international football. 'But it's a work in progress. There's a lot to improve and there's a lot to work on and all the lads and the staff and the manager are all confident and happy with the progression. 'I'm sure the manager and the coaching staff will look back at the (Senegal) game and see where we can be better because there is a lot of improvement to be made. But we're moving forward.' ‌ Gallagher is one of the group of England players who will now turn their attention to the Club World Cup. ‌ His Atletico Madrid will be involved in one of the glamour ties of the early rounds when they meet Paris St Germain in Los Angeles on Sunday. And Gallagher is looking forward to the challenge posed by the Champions League winners and the tournament itself. He said: 'They (PSG) are a world class team. They are the best team in the world right now and we'll be giving our best to try and beat them. You want to always play against the best players and their midfielders obviously had an unbelievable season, so you want to be playing against these guys. We know how hard it will be, but it's good for us and it's exciting. 'I'm really looking forward to it. It's going to be a great tournament. I think it will be really exciting when all the teams are actually there and the tournament starts.' Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
