Police record 22 theft cases at ECRL sites in Terengganu
KUALA TERENGGANU: Terengganu police recorded 22 theft-related reports, including cable thefts, at East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project sites across the state from Jan 1 to May 31 this year, with estimated losses totalling RM300,000.
State police chief Datuk Mohd Khairi Khairuddin said 13 investigation papers were opened, with five cases in Besut, four in Marang, two in Setiu, and one each in Kemaman and Dungun.
"Of these, five cases have been charged in court under Sections 414 and 379/511 of the Penal Code.
"Another five were classified as no further action (NFA) due to lack of evidence, while three are still under investigation," he told Bernama here today.
He said the number of cases had declined compared to the same period last year, when 35 reports were lodged, involving nearly RM2 million in losses.
At that time, 23 investigation papers were opened, eight cases in Marang, five each in Kuala Terengganu and Besut, three in Setiu, and two in Dungun.
"Of those cases, eight were brought to court under the same sections, five were given NFA status, and 10 remain under investigation," he said.
Mohd Khairi advised project site operators to strengthen security to prevent further theft, especially involving cables.
He recommended installing perimeter fencing, CCTV cameras, and adequate lighting, especially at night, in addition to deploying sufficient security personnel and maintaining a well-organised inventory system for construction materials and equipment.
He also urged nearby communities to report any suspicious activity or unauthorised movements around project sites to authorities or site management.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke had previously said the police must take firm action against cable thefts at ECRL sites, as such incidents could disrupt the project's progress.
Malaysia Rail Link (MRL) had expressed concern over cable thefts detected at certain locations along the ECRL alignment, which spans Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, and Selangor.
Meanwhile, in Kuantan, Pahang, eight cases of ECRL cable thefts, with estimated losses of about RM217,000, have been reported at project sites since the beginning of this year.
Kuantan district police chief Assistant Commissioner Wan Mohd Zahari Wan Busu said the incidents were reported in Cherating, Gebeng, and Damansara between Jan 1 and June 22.
"Investigations revealed that the cable thefts at ECRL station construction sites and along the alignments were not linked to any syndicates. However, we are investigating all possibilities, including the potential involvement of insiders.
"We are still tracking down the suspects and, to date, no arrests have been made.
"Police have advised ECRL on preventive measures to help curb these thefts," he said yesterday.
Wan Mohd Zahari said that following the recent incidents, Kuantan deputy police chief Superintendent Mohd Adli Mat Daud chaired a meeting with ECRL representatives on Monday.
"The department took immediate action by convening a meeting with ECRL officials at the Kuantan police headquarters.
"We discussed strategies to address the issue, and both parties have agreed to cooperate closely until the project is completed," he said.
Pahang police chief Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman had previously announced that a task force would be set up to prevent theft at the project sites.
He also recommended that the project operators consider employing auxiliary police to further strengthen security.
Malaysia Rail Link Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Datuk Seri Darwis Abdul Razak had previously voiced concerns over a series of cable thefts in Pahang, Kelantan, Terengganu, and Selangor, which he said could disrupt the planning and operational timeline of the ECRL.
He said thefts involving cables and transformer units had been reported at multiple sites, including Kota SAS, Paya Besar/Gambang, Cherating, and Kuantan Port City.
The 665km mega-rail project, which traverses Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, and Selangor, linking Kota Baru to the Gombak Integrated Transport Terminal, is slated to begin operations in January 2027 - Additional reporting by Asrol Awang.

MACC Completes Ismail Sabri Probe, Plans RM170 Mln Forfeiture
PUTRAJAYA, June 25 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has confirmed that the investigation into former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob has been completed, and a forfeiture application for cash amounting to RM170 million is expected to be filed within the next two weeks. MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said the investigation papers have been submitted to the Attorney General's Chambers, and the Deputy Public Prosecutor has agreed to proceed with the application for forfeiture of the cash. 'The affidavit application and related documents are being prepared. It is up to Ismail Sabri to challenge our application,' he said at a press conference at the MACC headquarters here today. However, Azam clarified that no decision has been made yet regarding criminal charges against the country's ninth prime minister. Ismail Sabri had previously appeared at the MACC headquarters several times to assist in investigations into alleged corruption and money laundering involving the use and procurement of funds for promotion and publicity of the Keluarga Malaysia programme during his administration from August 2021 to November 2022. Azam said the MACC had also recorded a statement from Ismail Sabri's former son-in-law, Datuk Jovian Mandagie, in relation to the investigation into the former prime minister's asset ownership. The investigation followed a directive for Ismail Sabri to declare his assets under Section 36(1) of the MACC Act 2009. The declaration was made on Feb 10, and the MACC is now analysing the sources of the declared assets. Following that, the MACC seized RM170 million in cash in various foreign currencies — including Baht, Riyal, Pound Sterling, Won, Euro, Swiss Franc and Yuan — and confiscated 16 kilogrammes of pure gold bars estimated to be worth RM7 million, as part of the corruption and money laundering probe against the former prime minister. The seizures were made during raids at a residence and office believed to have been used as a 'safehouse', based on investigations into four of Ismail Sabri's former senior officers who were detained in February.

MACC completes probe into Ismail Sabri, to file forfeiture bid over RM170 mln linked to former PM
Azam said Ismail Sabri's case is now with the deputy public prosecutor. — Bernama photo PUTRAJAYA (June 25): The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) today announced plans to file a forfeiture application involving RM170 million in connection with its corruption and money laundering investigation into former prime minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob. MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said the investigation has concluded, and the commission is awaiting further action from the deputy public prosecutor (DPP). 'This case has been completed and is now with the deputy public prosecutor. Based on the information I've received, the DPP has agreed to file the application, possibly within the next two weeks. 'This allows time to prepare the necessary affidavits and documents for the forfeiture of, firstly, the RM170 million I previously mentioned, which was obtained. It is up to Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri if he wishes to challenge our application,' he said at a press conference at MACC headquarters here today. Azam added that no decision has been made regarding criminal charges, as MACC is still waiting for further direction from the DPP. Asked when the Bera MP might be charged, Azam said the commission is optimistic that the next steps could take about a month. 'I believe within the next month or so, the DPP will come to a decision. I have also urged the DPP not to take too long, as this is a matter of public interest,' he said. Previously, Ismail Sabri was summoned seven times by MACC to assist in the investigation. The probe centres on alleged corruption and money laundering involving the expenditure and acquisition of funds for the promotion and publicity of the Keluarga Malaysia programme during his tenure as the ninth prime minister from August 2021 to November 2022. The case is being investigated under the MACC Act 2009 and the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001. On March 3, Azam revealed that Ismail Sabri is a suspect in the corruption and money laundering investigation. During an MACC raid, approximately RM170 million in cash in various currencies and 16 kilogrammes of gold bars were discovered in a 'safe house'. — Malay Mail
