Man's ear bitten off in vicious late night bar brawl caught on CCTV

Christopher Hewer had his left ear bitten off by Paul Connor but both were jailed for their part in the brawl in Gosforth, Cumbria last year which was captured on CCTV
A 'bar room bore' had his ear bitten off in a vicious late night attack captured on CCTV, a court has heard.
Horrific footage from inside the Kellbank Hotel in Gosforth, Cumbria, showed Christopher Hewer having his left ear bitten off by Paul Connor as he tried to escape his 'incessant chat', Carlisle crown court heard. Tim Evans, prosecutor, said that a drunk Hewer was "being the bar-room bore" and a fight involving several people ensued after he approached stranger Paul Connor at about midnight on July 8, 2023, who initially tried to move away from his "incessant chat" The pair came to blows and Connor used both hands to grab Hewer's head, leaning towards him and biting his left ear completely off before spitting it onto the ground.

A stunned female bystander collected the severed ear in a serviette, the court heard, as customers and the only member of staff attempted to stop the fight. Connor, 33, of Fenton Close, Speke, Liverpool, admitted wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and also affray. He received a four-and-a-half year jail term from Judge Michael Fanning, who accepted he was provoked by Hewer.
"But I have to deal with you for what you have done," said the judge. "You have used a weapon to inflict this injury. Use of the teeth is a weapon." Hewer, 44, of West View Road in Distington, near Workington, Cumbria, admitted affray and was handed an 18-month prison sentence.
"You provoked Mr Connor to the position he found himself in," said Judge Fanning. "You came out of this very much the loser with a very serious injury." Hewer's partner Antonia Holliday, 36, of Hinnings Road, Distington, Cumbria also took part in the violence that night, the court heard. Cumbria Police released a custody photoof Hewer with his left ear missing.
CCTV footage shown during the hearing showed her punching out at another customer, and being punched. Connor kicked Holliday and was punched by her, before the physical altercation with Hewer.
She was given a 15-month prison sentence, suspended for a year, with the judge noting she was the sole carer of two children. She must complete 200 hours of unpaid work and an alcohol ban.

The judge considered background information on all three, hearing they were sorry for their wrongdoing. Connor, a tree surgeon and dad-of-two, had acted out of character as "something snapped" when he was provoked, said his barrister Kim Whittlestone.
Appliance engineer Hewer, who wore a head bandage during the sentencing hearing, underwent a medical procedure with a view to a prosthetic ear being fitted. "Even after two years he is feeling the effects," said Marion Weir, mitigating.

Holliday could be seen punching out at another customer, and being punched. Connor kicked Holliday and was punched by her. Connor was struck by Hewer before the two men exchanged blows.
Connor then used both hands to grab Hewer's head, leaning towards him and biting his left ear completely off before spitting it onto the ground. Hewer initially appeared oblivious to the savage act, while Holliday fell after being punched to the head by Connor.
Mr Evans said: 'It to the credit of a number of people, none more so than the staff member, that they try to stop the violence.' A stunned female bystander collected the severed ear in a serviette.
Holliday's 15-month custodial term was suspended for a year, the judge noting she was the sole carer of two children. She must complete 200 hours' unpaid work and an alcohol ban.

Terrifying moment balaclava-clad robber threatens shop worker with meat cleaver before stealing £2,000 - as police launch manhunt

A baclava-clad robber waved a meat cleaver in the face of a shop worker before stealing £2000 as he instructed him to 'empty the till now'. CCTV shows the thug storm into the Armadale Premier in Bathgate, West Lothian, at around 8.15pm yesterday evening. Wearing a grey tracksuit and grey Adidas trainers, he can be seen shoving the shop owner into a corner before helping himself to the cash. Shop bosses took to social media to share the video and are now appealing for any information about the culprit. They wrote on Facebook: 'There was a robbery at the shop at 8:15pm, if anyone know anything about this guy please let us know.' Store owner Abdul Manan added there had been 'minor incidents in the past but nothing like this' and said the store assistant was 'shaken but is doing ok'. Mr Manan, who was not in the store at the time, said he was first alerted to the incident after the store clerk, Atta, contacted him immediately when it happened. He told the Edinburgh Evening News Atta had informed him there'd been a robbery at the shop. Mr Manan explained: He said he was [ok] so I said just hang up and call the police and I'm on my way. 'He's been working in the shop for quite a while and that's the first time this has ever happened.' The store owner went on to say he believed the robber was seen at around 7.45pm standing at the bus stop next to the shop for half an hour, keeping an eye on the store. He said Atta had been getting ready to close the shop for 9pm, clean it, and mop everything before the incident took place. Mr Manan added: 'The police were here until around 2am on Friday and forensics have been out. Because I shared the CCTV video on social media lots of people have come back to me as well with information and I have given that to the police.' One well-wisher wrote: 'Poor guy, just doing his job' while another said: 'This is absolutely disgusting, I hope you're ok, that must've been terrifying.' A third customer added: 'This is out off order they are trying to make a honest living to help the community they are so nice and helpful.' A Police Scotland spokesman said: 'Police received a report of a robbery at a premises on Lower Bathville in Armadale around 8.20pm on Thursday, 26 June, 2025. 'A man threatened staff with a weapon before stealing approximately £2,000 in cash and running off. No-one was injured. 'Officers attended and enquiries are ongoing to trace the man.'

Man seen on CCTV calmly walking in city after killing wife as she pushed pram

A 'violent, jealous, controlling' husband who stabbed his wife to death as she pushed their baby in a pram after tracking her to a women's refuge was captured on CCTV casually walking around a city centre in the minutes after the murder. Habibur Masum launched a 'ferocious' daylight knife attack on Kulsuma Akter before leaving her 'bleeding to death in the gutter' and calmly walking away from her and their seven-month-old son. A court heard Masum, 26, followed Ms Akter, 27, to a refuge in Bradford where she had been staying after he held a knife to her throat following an assault at their home in Greater Manchester. After tracking his wife through her phone location, Masum was seen on CCTV in the days leading up to the fatal attack 'loitering, watching and waiting' in streets around the hostel, jurors heard. He sent Ms Akter messages threatening to kill her family members if she did not return to him, before trying to lure her out by sending fake messages from a local GP practice pretending their son had an appointment. Bradford Crown Court heard Ms Akter eventually felt safe enough to leave the refuge on April 6 last year after Masum updated his Facebook page falsely claiming to be in Spain. He confronted her as she was walking in the city centre and was seen on CCTV trying to steer her and the pram away before pulling a knife from his jacket and launching the 'brutal attack' when he realised she was not coming with him, prosecutor Stephen Wood KC told jurors. CCTV footage of the attack, played during the trial, captured Ms Akter's screams as Masum stabbed her at least 25 times, put her on the ground and kicked her 'as a final insult' before lifting her head and cutting her throat. Footage released by police after Masum's conviction shows him calmly walking away from the murder scene and through Bradford city centre. Jurors heard Masum travelled almost 200 miles south to Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, and was arrested in the early hours of April 9 in a car park near Stoke Mandeville Hospital, where he had gone to be treated for 'lockjaw'. During the trial, Masum refused to watch footage of the attack but jurors heard that during his first police interview he requested to see it, with Mr Wood saying he wanted to see what officers 'had on him'. When he gave evidence through a Bengali interpreter, Masum said he did not remember killing his wife and had taken a knife with him intending to stab himself in front of her if she did not 'listen to him'. He broke down in tears as he claimed to have 'lost control' when Ms Akter told him there would be no shortage of people willing to replace him as a father to their son. But Mr Wood said his tears 'were as fake as his claims of self harm' and that 'the only person Habibur Masum feels sorry for is himself'. The prosecutor said the relationship between Masum and Ms Akter was 'an abusive relationship characterised by his jealousy, possessiveness and controlling behaviour'. Jurors heard the couple met and married in Bangladesh, and came to the UK in 2022 after he obtained a student visa and enrolled on a Masters course to study marketing. On November 23 2023 he became jealous over a 'completely innocuous' message she received from a male colleague and was accused of assault by grabbing her face, slapping her and pulling her hair. He was cleared of that charge. The court heard he told her he was going to murder her, and held a knife to her throat the next day. Masum was arrested and charged over the incident, with Ms Akter deciding to leave him and being moved to the Bradford refuge by Oldham social services in January 2024. The court heard that while she was at the refuge, Masum sent her a photo of the front of the building with a message saying: 'I know that you are living in this place. I knew from the first day you moved here. 'If I had any wish to kill you, I could have from the first day. You do not know what you have lost but one day you will understand. Nobody will love you like I do.' The court heard Ms Akter's social worker arranged for her to be rehoused and she was due to move on April 8, but in the meantime she heard from Masum's brother that he was in Spain, and 'felt safe to leave the refuge' on the day she was killed. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) said no officers will face action after Ms Akter contacted West Yorkshire Police a week before she was killed saying Masum had sent her death threats. The watchdog said officers were sent to the area but no suspect was found, and an intelligence report was then shared with Greater Manchester Police three days later. Masum had pleaded guilty to manslaughter but denied murder. On Friday he was found guilty of the more serious charge, as well as one charge of assault, one count of making threats to kill and one charge of stalking. He pleaded guilty to possession of a knife in public. Masum did not visibly react as the verdicts were read out. He was told by the judge Mr Justice Cotter, that he will be sentenced on July 22, when the minimum term for his life sentence will be determined.
