'Taking politics out': Pete Hegseth rechristens US Navy ship named after gay rights leader; gives it World War II sailor's name
Pete Hegseth
US defense secretary
Pete Hegseth
on Friday (local time) announced the new name - USNS Oscar V Peterson - of USNS Harvey Milk, days after he directed the United States Navy to rename the ship.
"We are taking the politics out of ship naming," he wrote on X along with a video announcing the move.
The "politics" Hegseth referred to is that the ship's previous name was a tribute to Harvey Milk, a politician and gay rights activist. Milk, who served four years in the Navy in the Korean War but left due to his sexuality, later became California's first openly homosexual politician.
In November 1978, aged 48, he was shot and killed inside San Francisco city hall by Dan White, a former San Francisco supervisor. He was also the subject of the 2008 critically-acclaimed biopic "Milk."
On the other hand, Oscar V Peterson spent 20 years in the Navy and was killed during a World War II battle, in an act of self-sacrifice which saved lives. Peterson received a posthumous Medal of Honor for his act of bravery.
USNS Harvey Milk, a fleet replenishment oiler, was originally named in 2016 under then-President Barack Obama, a Democrat.
Its name-change comes amid a push from Hegseth to remove DEI (diversity, equity and inclusion) and "woke" policies from the department of defense, which he leads in the administration of Donald Trump, a Republican.

When the move was first reported earlier this month, Rep Nancy Pelosi, a California Democrat, called it a "shameful, vindictive erasure of those who fought to break down barriers for all to chase the American Dream."
"As the rest of us are celebrating the joy of Pride Month, it is my hope that the Navy will reconsider this egregious decision," Pelosi's statement read.

Trump's Triumph: US Senate Votes Down Resolution To Curb Iran War Powers | 'If We Send Troops…' The Republican-led U.S. Senate rejected a Democratic-led bid to block President Donald Trump from using further military force against Iran. This came hours after Trump said he would consider more bombing. The Senate vote was 53 to 47 against a war powers resolution that would have required congressional approval for more hostilities against Iran. The vote was along party lines, except Pennsylvania Democrat John Fetterman voted no, with Republicans, and Kentucky Republican Rand Paul voted yes, with Democrats. 1.4K views | 7 hours ago

Why authorities in Qatar are warning people to stay away from unidentified objects
Qatar 's Ministries of Defence and Interior have jointly issued a public safety advisory. It urges citizens and residents to report any suspicious fragments or strange objects that may be linked to the interception of Iranian missiles, as reported by Khaleej Times. It comes days after Iran launched a missile attack on the Al Udeid US base in Qatar on Monday, June 23, in retaliation for US attacks on several nuclear sites in the Islamic Republic of Iran as part of the 12-day conflict between Israel and Iran. Following the Iranian attack on a US base, President Donald Trump stated that Iran launched 14 missiles at the airbase. EC defends special voter roll revision amid oppn protests
Patna: The Election Commission (EC) on Saturday made it clear that the ongoing special intensive revision (SIR) of Bihar's electoral rolls is unlikely to be halted or postponed despite mounting opposition. The exercise is progressing on schedule and the draft electoral roll is set to be published on Aug 1 for corrections, if any. The last such revision was conducted in 2003. "All activities relating to SIR are progressing well as per schedule," the EC said in a press note. The clarification came a day after leaders of the opposition INDIA bloc criticised the timing of the revision and alleged that the exercise was a veiled attempt to disenfranchise sections of the electorate in order to favour the ruling alliance. "It is supposed to be the voters who elect the govt, but in this case, the govt is choosing the voters," an opposition leader said. Unfazed by the criticism, the EC underlined its constitutional mandate. "The Constitution of India is supreme. All citizens, political parties and the Election Commission of India follow the Constitution. SIR has already started successfully in Bihar for verifying the eligibility of each elector with full participation of all political parties," the poll panel said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Forget Furosemide, Use This Household Item To Help Drain Edema Fluid WellnessGuide Learn more Undo The revision process officially began on Wednesday. The EC said 77,895 booth level officers (BLOs) have already been deployed and there are plans to induct 20,603 more. In addition, over one lakh volunteers will assist genuine voters – particularly the elderly, infirm, persons with disabilities, the poor and other vulnerable groups – during the revision. Political parties, too, have engaged in the process with recognised national and state-level parties appointing over 1.54 lakh booth level agents (BLAs). The EC noted that parties may still designate more BLAs if needed. Printing and door-to-door distribution of enumeration forms (EFs) has begun in all 243 assembly constituencies, covering Bihar's 7.89 crore electorate. Online submission of EFs is also available. Of these, 4.96 crore voters already listed in the last revised roll (based on the 2003 intensive revision) are only required to verify and submit the form. The remaining 2.93 crore must provide documents to support their claims for inclusion, first in the draft roll and subsequently in the final list after necessary corrections. Handbills are being distributed to inform voters about the process.
