Artist Mr. Brainwash Has a New Car-Themed Exhibit at Petersen Museum

Yahoo27-11-2024

Just to your right as you enter the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles, inside the Armand Hammer Foundation Gallery where all the 'artsy' exhibits go, is a really fun, or maybe really weird new exhibit.
Depends on your point of view.
'Cars Are Beautiful: Mr. Brainwash @ the Petersen,' is a whimsical collection of artworks, both paintings as well as cars and a few things in between, that will have you either laughing in bemusement or tearing up your museum membership card and demanding a refund. But it's almost certainly the former.
The museum calls it 'a fully immersive celebration of the automobile through the lens of contemporary artist Mr. Brainwash, including imaginative interpretations of iconic cars, engaging hands-on pieces, and an explosion of colors and unique creations.'
Consider some of the the exhibits, as the Petersen describes them:
'Brainwashed,' a life-sized interactive Matchbox Fiat 500, offers an ideal photo opportunity.
'Furry Fiat,' a Fiat 500 covered in pink faux fur, provides a tactical experience.
'Dream Car' is a sculpture divided into four sections, each representing a different luxury brand: Mercedes-Benz, Lamborghini, Porsche, and Ferrari. It fuses these four iconic vehicles together into what Mr. Brainwash envisions as a car enthusiast's dream.
'Rubik's,' a massive Rubik's Cube with each cube filled with multi-colored cars.
'Time Machine,' a Mini Cooper completely surrounded by books, symbolizes the spirit of adventure and freedom while highlighting the deep connection between books and cars.
'Childhood Dream,' an interactive display inspired by Vincent Van Gogh, turns a bedroom into a fully immersive space.
'The Thinkcar,' an interpretation of the iconic 'Thinker' sculpture by Auguste Rodin with a creative automotive twist.
'Big Little Car' pays homage to the nostalgic Little Tikes child's car scaled up to 10 ft. tall.
'Tired Victory' reinterprets the 'Winged Victory of Samothrace' from the Louvre, using real tires to bring new life to this ancient symbol of triumph.
Plus more than a dozen iconic paintings with hidden automotive touches.
My favorite is the Brainwash takeoff on Van Gogh's 'Bedroom in Arles.' The original painting on which artist Thierry Guetta, AKA Mr. Brainwash, based this work has brilliant blue colors depicting the simple, minimalist bedroom at 2, Place Lamartine in Arles, Bouches-du-Rhône, France.
Guetta, who was born in France but now lives in Los Angeles, does a remarkable full-sized, three-dimensional recreation of the room and the beautiful colors from the painting (I happened to see it a few months ago in the Musee d'Orsay in Paris, btw).
But in place of Van Gogh's simple bed, Guetta has placed one of those kiddie beds shaped like a race car. It's so cool you want to curl up in it and go to sleep, dreaming of racing.
Guetta is a well-established character in the art world. His website, mrbrainwash.com, lists a few accomplishments: 'Mr. Brainwash has designed album covers for Madonna, Rick Ross, and KYGO. His artwork was featured in films and television productions such as Molly's Game, Billions, Shameless, and The Kardashians.
'Mr. Brainwash's talents are showcased in creative partnerships with powerhouse brands like Hublot, Coca-Cola, and Marvel Comics creator Stan Lee. He also collaborated with world-known soccer player Pelé, who joined the artist in splattering paint on select artwork.'
He seems to be having a good time.
'This is truly a dream come true. I'm honored to have my very own display at the Petersen,' he said. 'Seeing the joy in everyone's eyes is priceless for me. I wanted this display to have no limitations so everyone can be one with the art.'
The Petersen describes Guetta's approach thusly: 'His distinctive style blends graffiti, printmaking, stenciling, painting, and sculpture. Mr. Brainwash's artworks are known for conveying a sense of playfulness and wonder.'
The museum, for its part, seems to be enjoying the whole thing, too.
'This exhibit is unlike anything we've ever done before," said Terry L. Karges, executive director of the Petersen Automotive Museum. 'Mr. Brainwash's creativity offers an unparalleled and exciting perspective on cars, and we love having our visitors get up close and personal with these works of art.'
'Cars Are Beautiful' will be on display until 2026. To purchase tickets or for more information about the Petersen, go toPetersen.org/exhibits.

Buggyra Academy's FACE OFF program heads to Lausitzring for round 2 of the GT Cup Series

Following a successful debut in Austria, Buggyra Academy's innovative FACE OFF driver development program continues this weekend with round 2 of the GT Cup Series at the German Lausitzring. Monaco/France, June 12, 2025 -- The FACE OFF program offers young talents a unique learning experience by pairing them with experienced racers in real race conditions, not just simulators or test sessions. By combining competition with mentorship, FACE OFF helps junior drivers grow on and off the track. This weekend, two Mercedes-AMG GT4 cars will race under the Buggyra ZM Racing banner. In car #29, Dubai-born Aliyyah Koloc makes her GT racing debut of the season alongside 16-year-old Miroslav Mikeš 18-year-old Filip Nedoma. Koloc missed the opening round due to her participation in the Chinese Taklimakan Rally, reflecting her dual commitment to both GT and rally raid disciplines. In car #55, Czech veteran racer Adam Lacko teams up with 18-year-old Filip Nedoma. The driver pairings differ from the Austrian round, where Nedoma raced with experienced Czech circuit and rally driver Martin Hudec, substituting for Aliyyah Koloc, and Mikeš was partnered with Lacko. 'I'm really happy to finally start my GT season, especially at a track I haven't raced on before,' said Aliyyah Koloc. 'I've spent a lot of time preparing for the Lausitzring in the simulator, and after an intense rally raid season so far, it will be interesting to see how the switch to GT goes. I'm also really looking forward to sharing my experience with the youngsters. Helping them grow is a big part of what FACE OFF is about.' The Lausitzring, renowned for its high-speed oval section, which is rarely found in continental Europe, has been a part of the GT Cup calendar since 2024. As part of the FACE OFF program, the young drivers are evaluated across multiple performance indicators, including on-track results, technical understanding, and personal development off the track. The evaluation system has been specifically developed by Buggyra, and it is designed to complement, not compete with, the official championship rankings. After round 1, Team 29 (Nedoma) leads the FACE OFF standings with 64 points, while Team 55 (Mikeš) has only 18 points due to technical issues in Austria. The team has since worked tirelessly to resolve these problems and is aiming for a strong comeback at the Lausitzring. Our Hyundai Ioniq 6 Is Almost as Fast as a Porsche Taycan

These days when it comes to analyzing performance, traditional metrics like 0 to 60 mph and quarter mile times often only tell part of the story. Sure, the likes of a 2025 Porsche Taycan S can easily pummel a fellow EV sedan such as our yearlong review 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 6 SE Long Range out at the test track. But when it comes to charge times, we recently found during our testing that the Ioniq 6 can more than hang with the Taycan S. The Hyundai Ioniq 6 SE Long Range impresses with fast charging, nearly rivaling the Porsche Taycan. It adds 267 miles in 30 mins, is efficient, and costs $43K. However, its 292-mile real-world range falls short of the 361-mile EPA estimate. It excels in city efficiency but has minor tech annoyances. This summary was generated by AI using content from this MotorTrend article Read Next It's the type of result that further highlights how impressive Hyundai's E-GMP platform-based EVs continue to be, even when matched against Porsche's recently updated and equally impressive Taycan models. Now that our Ioniq 6 is back at our Los Angeles HQ, we had a chance to subject it to our EV testing regimen, and not only did it outperform just about every other Hyundai Group EV we've tested to date, it's the third fastest-charging EV we've ever tested when it comes to cumulative range added after 15 and 30 minutes at a DC fast charger, behind only a 2025 Taycan S (we tested the Taycan S in both its Normal and Range modes, and are listing the closer Normal results). It's not quite a photo finish, but the Ioniq6 is in the Taycan's ballpark. Here are the results: MotorTrend's Yearlong Review 2024 Ioniq 6 SE Long Range RWD Cumulative Range Added @ 15 min: 200 miles Cumulative Range Added @ 30 min: 267 miles 2025 Porsche Taycan 4S Performance Battery Plus (Normal mode) Cumulative Range Added @ 15 min: 207 miles Cumulative Range Added @ 30 min: 273 miles The differences can be primarily chalked up to the fact that the Taycan S can ingest significantly more average power than the Ioniq 6 when charging from 5 to 80 percent (258 kW for the Porsche versus 195 kW in the Hyundai) and 5 to 100 percent (124 kW versus 105 kW), with total peak power also handily in favor of the Porsche (325 kW for the Taycan and 242 kW for the Ioniq 6). It also must be pointed out that the Ioniq 6 is considerably more efficient—153/127/140 mpg-e versus 89/85/87 mpg-e—so each mile of range added requires fewer kWh coming through the charger. The numbers are also competitive when looking at baseline 5 to 80 and 5 to 100 percent charge times. The Ioniq 6 matches the Taycan to 80 percent at 19 minutes, and the electrons streak into its 77.4-kWh battery pack some six minutes quicker to 100 percent at 45 minutes versus 51 minutes for the Porsche and its 97.0-kWh battery pack. Note that the Taycan has a lot more battery to fill than the Ioniq 6 does. When it comes to our signature MotorTrend 70-mph Road Trip range test, however, the Porsche simply took the Ioniq 6 out to the woodshed, sort of like they'd do if both cars were pitted against each other in a quarter-mile drag race. At an official EPA combined range of 361 miles, the Ioniq 6 managed 292 miles in our test that runs a car at a steady highway route from 100 to 5 percent charge. That's 19 percent off the EPA number and slightly worse than our overall average. It's a good number for its $43K price, however, and it's important to note that we don't expect our test to match the EPA's numbers (our real-world numbers have also normally been far lower). Interestingly, we tested our yearlong car with about 11,400 miles on the odometer, and the number we recorded was virtually the same as a new, mechanically identical 2023 Ioniq 6 we previously range tested, which speaks to the consistency of both our test and the Ioniq 6's battery life to date. It was a far different story for the 2025 Taycan S, which recorded better range test numbers than its official government estimate of 295 miles. In its default drive mode, the Taycan cleared 302 miles, and it cleared 314 miles in efficiency-maximizing Range mode. The Taycan is among the few vehicles we've tested that have bettered the EPA's numbers. The Ioniq 6 does hold one other edge over its fellow EV sedan, with a slightly better drag coefficient (0.21 vs. 0.22), numbers that help both models with overall efficiency. As our testing continues to make clear, nothing is certain, and everything is constantly changing with the charging, performance, and efficiency of EVs that often leads to surprising results, as these numbers illustrate. ‘Why I Hate New Cars': Man Tries to Replace a Headlight Bulb on His 2022 Toyota Corolla. Then He Learns Something Unexpected

A 2022 Toyota Corolla owner was shocked to discover how expensive and time consuming it is to replace a burnt out headlight on his vehicle. Derek (@wrenchin_derek) posted a TikTok about his experience that's garnered more than 573,000 views so far. All this stress results from a design choice that necessitates not only removing the bumper, but swapping out the car's entire headlight assembly. Normally, Derek states, such a fix would cost $20 and a few minutes. It's engineering like this, he argues, that has many folks reluctant to purchase newer cars. Get the best news, reviews, columns, and more delivered straight to your inbox, daily. back Sign up For more information, read our Privacy Policy and Terms of Use . Headlight Out Derek begins his video standing in front of a red 2022 Toyota Corolla with an open hood. He's already frustrated. 'This is why I hate new cars,' he proclaims before delving into his story. 'Last night, I'm driving home, I pass my parents. They call me say, 'Hey you got a headlight out. You need to replace that before you get pulled over.'' The TikToker assumed that this would be an easy enough procedure. For instance, as a YouTuber demonstrated , in a 2007 Toyota Corolla you just pop the hood, locate the headlight unit, and swap in a new bulb. Derek says replacing the light on his 2022 Corolla wasn't so straightforward. 'This morning I wake up, I come out, to pull the headlight bulb out of this Toyota Corolla. 22' Toyota Corolla. And I come to the discovery that it's a sealed unit.' Changing the light in a sealed unit proves it isn't 2007 anymore. 'The bulb is not serviceable. So in order to replace it you have to replace the whole assembly. Which requires taking this bumper off.' No Bulb For You As if the sealed unit weren't bad enough, Derek's problems compounded when he called a local parts store to purchase a new light. He says he was told the bulbs weren't for sale, meaning he had precious few options for fixing his own headlight. Instead of just purchasing a single bulb, Derek was faced with a new expenditure: an entirely new assembly unit. 'I'm like, 'Yeah I know I gotta buy the whole headlight assembly. How much is that?' And they say, 'You don't want to know.'' When Derek asked if it was 'that bad,' he says a worker replied, 'Oh it's bad. You're looking at anywhere from $1,000 to $1,100 for this driver's side headlight.' Derek was astounded. 'Jesus freaking Christ,' he says in the TikTok. 'Uh, no. For one.' Then She's Told It's Totaled, Costs $27K To 'Fix 5 Wires' Other Options Derek then began scouring the internet for better deals. However, this didn't solve his problem of having a burnt out headlight. 'Cheapest one I could find was on Amazon for $120 for this particular model, XSE. But then I'm waiting a few days which means it's not gonna come in before I gotta drive to work in the mornings. Further, there's the process of replacing an entire headlight assembly. This is much more time consuming than simply switching out a bulb. Derek estimates it'll take him an entire afternoon. At this point in the video, Derek directs his lens into the engine bay of the Corolla to demonstrate that the headlight could have been made easily accessible. 'It's not like I have no room to get back there to it. Like I got all kinds of room. I could've had…a bulb that's serviceable.' Toyota Headlight Woes Derek says that bulbs for his other vehicle cost about $60 for two of the 'best.' And changing one would've taken him about 20 minutes. Of the Corolla, he says, 'Freaking waiting a few days for a headlight to come in. And then a few hours to replace it.' He believes these design choices dissuade folks from purchasing new vehicles. 'And people wonder why they don't want to buy new cars. Because they make things so unserviceable and so pricey. Why would you want to?' 'With Enough Glue and Tape It Should Hold' People were universally appalled by the cost and effort to change the headlight in Derek's 2022 Toyota Corolla. One opined that sealed front lamps should have extended shelf lives. 'An unserviceable led headlight should last longer than 3 years,' they said. Another highlighted how such a maneuver produces an inordinate amount of waste, yet 'meanwhile they have us drinking from cardboard/paper straws.' Another TikToker said that such exorbitant pricing would force them to come up with a creative solution. 'Personally, for $1000 I'm drilling and jigsawing the bulb out and wiring up a replacement. With enough glue and tape it should hold.' Another speculated this is part of a concentrated effort from auto manufacturers to fleece its customers. 'They don't want you independently working on cars. They want you under their thumb for everything.' Motor1 has reached out to Toyota via email and Derek via TikTok comment for further information.
