Artist Mr. Brainwash Has a New Car-Themed Exhibit at Petersen Museum
Just to your right as you enter the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles, inside the Armand Hammer Foundation Gallery where all the 'artsy' exhibits go, is a really fun, or maybe really weird new exhibit.
Depends on your point of view.
'Cars Are Beautiful: Mr. Brainwash @ the Petersen,' is a whimsical collection of artworks, both paintings as well as cars and a few things in between, that will have you either laughing in bemusement or tearing up your museum membership card and demanding a refund. But it's almost certainly the former.
The museum calls it 'a fully immersive celebration of the automobile through the lens of contemporary artist Mr. Brainwash, including imaginative interpretations of iconic cars, engaging hands-on pieces, and an explosion of colors and unique creations.'
Consider some of the the exhibits, as the Petersen describes them:
'Brainwashed,' a life-sized interactive Matchbox Fiat 500, offers an ideal photo opportunity.
'Furry Fiat,' a Fiat 500 covered in pink faux fur, provides a tactical experience.
'Dream Car' is a sculpture divided into four sections, each representing a different luxury brand: Mercedes-Benz, Lamborghini, Porsche, and Ferrari. It fuses these four iconic vehicles together into what Mr. Brainwash envisions as a car enthusiast's dream.
'Rubik's,' a massive Rubik's Cube with each cube filled with multi-colored cars.
'Time Machine,' a Mini Cooper completely surrounded by books, symbolizes the spirit of adventure and freedom while highlighting the deep connection between books and cars.
'Childhood Dream,' an interactive display inspired by Vincent Van Gogh, turns a bedroom into a fully immersive space.
'The Thinkcar,' an interpretation of the iconic 'Thinker' sculpture by Auguste Rodin with a creative automotive twist.
'Big Little Car' pays homage to the nostalgic Little Tikes child's car scaled up to 10 ft. tall.
'Tired Victory' reinterprets the 'Winged Victory of Samothrace' from the Louvre, using real tires to bring new life to this ancient symbol of triumph.
Plus more than a dozen iconic paintings with hidden automotive touches.
My favorite is the Brainwash takeoff on Van Gogh's 'Bedroom in Arles.' The original painting on which artist Thierry Guetta, AKA Mr. Brainwash, based this work has brilliant blue colors depicting the simple, minimalist bedroom at 2, Place Lamartine in Arles, Bouches-du-Rhône, France.
Guetta, who was born in France but now lives in Los Angeles, does a remarkable full-sized, three-dimensional recreation of the room and the beautiful colors from the painting (I happened to see it a few months ago in the Musee d'Orsay in Paris, btw).
But in place of Van Gogh's simple bed, Guetta has placed one of those kiddie beds shaped like a race car. It's so cool you want to curl up in it and go to sleep, dreaming of racing.
Guetta is a well-established character in the art world. His website, mrbrainwash.com, lists a few accomplishments: 'Mr. Brainwash has designed album covers for Madonna, Rick Ross, and KYGO. His artwork was featured in films and television productions such as Molly's Game, Billions, Shameless, and The Kardashians.
'Mr. Brainwash's talents are showcased in creative partnerships with powerhouse brands like Hublot, Coca-Cola, and Marvel Comics creator Stan Lee. He also collaborated with world-known soccer player Pelé, who joined the artist in splattering paint on select artwork.'
He seems to be having a good time.
'This is truly a dream come true. I'm honored to have my very own display at the Petersen,' he said. 'Seeing the joy in everyone's eyes is priceless for me. I wanted this display to have no limitations so everyone can be one with the art.'
The Petersen describes Guetta's approach thusly: 'His distinctive style blends graffiti, printmaking, stenciling, painting, and sculpture. Mr. Brainwash's artworks are known for conveying a sense of playfulness and wonder.'
The museum, for its part, seems to be enjoying the whole thing, too.
'This exhibit is unlike anything we've ever done before," said Terry L. Karges, executive director of the Petersen Automotive Museum. 'Mr. Brainwash's creativity offers an unparalleled and exciting perspective on cars, and we love having our visitors get up close and personal with these works of art.'
'Cars Are Beautiful' will be on display until 2026. To purchase tickets or for more information about the Petersen, go toPetersen.org/exhibits.

'Waiting for Britney Spears': 5 shocking (allegedly true) stories from a former tabloid writer
In his new book, "Waiting for Britney Spears: A True Story, Allegedly" — a mix of fact and fiction — music writer and L.A. native Jeff Weiss brings us back to the last gasp of the celebrity gossip-mongering machine of the early aughts. It was the prelapsarian age of the dumb phone, when we weren't all taking photos of everything all the time and paparazzi were commanding six figures for shots of Angelina Jolie's baby bump. Fresh out of college and dreaming of Pulitzer glory, Weiss instead takes a job with Star magazine — called Nova in the book — to pay his rent and winds up being present during ugly episodes of the celebrity stalking era: Britney Spears' meteoric rise and career lows in the early 2000s, a few years before her personal and business affairs were placed under a court-ordered conservatorship controlled by her father, Jamie. Weiss bears witness to this particularly gruesome episode with clenched teeth, filing dispatches for rent money alongside photographer Mel Bouzad (referred to as Oliver Bournemouth in the book), who acts as his Virgil, smoothing the writer's way through Hollywood's red velvet ropes. Weiss in short order is engulfed by Spears' world until it becomes his organizing principle. The writer becomes an unrepentant co-conspirator in the plot to knock down Spears, one breaking news item at a time. "We wanted more and more, until she had no energy left to resist and no place left to hide," writes Weiss. Here are some of the most shocking stories from the book. Read more: Britney Spears' highs and lows — a timeline from 'The Mickey Mouse Club' to her tell-all memoir As a cub reporter in 2004, Weiss gets a hot tip about Spears' wedding to Kevin Federline at the Studio City home of a Spears confidant. Accompanied by Bouzad, Weiss scouts a neighboring house and pays off its owner in order to witness the nuptials next door. 'An hour before the ceremony, the bridegroom swaggers in in his white undershirt,' Weiss writes. 'The groomsmen look like lost members of 98 Degrees, wearing squiggly goatees and gummy-worm braids.' After the reception, where Federline 'removes [Britney's] garter belt with his teeth,' the wedding party packs into black SUVs wearing monogrammed Juicy Couture sweatsuits: 'Britney's announces Mrs. Federline. His just reads, Hers.' Weiss' Britney beat is temporarily placed on hold so he can dig up information on Ben Affleck's budding relationship with actor Jennifer Garner. In search of the duo, Weiss drives to Affleck's Brentwood house. He's in luck: Affleck materializes and hops into his car, prompting Weiss to tail him. 'My wobbling, elephantine car is no match for his agile V12 Mercedes, but I somehow keep up,' he writes. But Affleck is onto Weiss and swerves across lanes of traffic along the 101 en route to the San Fernando Valley. Weiss is nearly side-swiped by a Range Rover, 'and suddenly, it's over. [Affleck's] car heads into the parking lot of Bob's Big Boy.' When the visibly shaken driver emerges from the Mercedes, it turns out to be Affleck's brother, Casey. On assignment for People magazine in 2005, Weiss attempts to sneak onto Brad Pitt's beachfront compound in Santa Barbara, hoping to grab some tasty morsels about the megastar's new relationship with Jolie. He has been tasked, alongside a two-paparazzi team, with monitoring Jolie's son's fourth birthday party. 'I'm on the verge of breaking open one of the decade's biggest stories,' he writes. 'For the last six months, you haven't been able to buy a Snickers at the supermarket without missing the all-caps headlines' about the love triangle between Pitt, Jolie and Jennifer Aniston. No sooner does Weiss climb a bluff and whip out his binoculars than he is surrounded by 'four goons' with Glocks tucked into their shorts. He is harassed and finally released, but not before Pitt appears. 'He shakes his head slowly, confidently, letting me know that I've lost.' The next day, Weiss himself becomes a tabloid story: In the U.K., the Daily Mail headline reads, "People Paparazzo Popped Trying to Snake Pitt." Weiss has his first 15 seconds of infamy. Read more: Britney Spears' 13-year conservatorship is done. Here's how we got here In 2007, Weiss and Bouzad chase Spears — recently divorced from Federline — to a nondescript hair salon in Tarzana. 'Shielded by her security, Britney scurries in like a frightened deer,' Weiss writes. From an open window, Weiss hears Spears tell the hairdresser, 'I want you to buzz my hair off.' When she refuses, Spears grabs the trimmer and clicks it on: 'The extensions are hacked into lifeless scraps … the stray hairs curl on the floor like writhing snakes.' Hours later, Spears' hair is auctioned on eBay. 'The bidding reaches $1 million before the online auction house removes the listing. The authenticity of the hair cannot be verified.' In her own memoir, 'The Woman in Me,' Spears explained the reason for the bold act. 'Shaving my head and acting out were my ways of pushing back,' Spears wrote. That same year, Spears attempts a musical comeback with a new album and series of one-off performances. Weiss nabs an exclusive interview with the pop star at a rented mansion in the Hollywood Hills. It doesn't go as planned. A disoriented and agitated Spears shows up late, rejects the pre-selected wardrobe choices for the photo shoot and locks herself in the bathroom. Finally, Weiss' moment arrives. Over lunch, 'Britney shrugs and summons me like she has something to confess.' Weiss is about to get his first face-to-face with Spears, but it's a false alarm: She thinks Weiss is a production assistant. 'She hands me her empty plate filled with bones and fat to throw away.' The top 10 cars on the market that are the easiest to park in the UK
Car models from Ford, Kia, Volkswagen, Fiat and more have been named among the easiest to park with in the UK. While driving is something many motorists enjoy, the act of parking can be a bit more difficult and cause stress for some. It comes as research from Cazoo shows that Gen Z (people born between 1997 and 2012) are the most nervous generation by far when it comes to parking. A survey of more than 2,000 motorists found that 96% within the age group faced 'park-xiety'. Parking can be a cause of stress for some motorists (Image: Getty Images) Additionally, around two-thirds (66%) say they have asked someone else to park their car for them, which is illegal if the person isn't insured on that car. With this in mind, Harry Waring, Motoring Specialist at Cazoo, has shared the 10 best cars currently on the market that are the easiest to park with. A classic first car for a reason, the Fiat 500's compact size, light steering and good all-around visibility make it ideal for slotting into spaces. The Ford Fiesta offers functions such as voice control, rear-view cameras and parking sensors available across a range of its models. Waring adds that it is "responsive and solid on the road and in the car park". All models of the Volkswagen Polo have a range of advanced safety features, such as automatic braking, that could help you avoid a collision when parking. Waring says: "A slightly more premium supermini, the Polo offers an easygoing driving experience with a focus on comfort rather than outright fun." The Mercedes-Benz A-Class is considered to be a good option thanks to being equipped with several parking assistance features. This includes standard reversing cameras, parking sensors, and even active parking assist systems that automatically steer the car into parking spaces. Waring adds: "It's relatively compact hatchback form also helps with manoeuvrability compared to larger vehicles, and second-hand examples are very affordable, despite the premium badge." The Hyundai i10 is an "excellent" car for the city and is a "dream to park" thanks to its small size, light steering and good all-around visibility. Some more expensive models even have rear parking sensors, a rare feature in a car of this size. The Kia Picanto takes the crown for one of the UK's least-expensive and best-value cars, and this approach carries through to parking. Waring adds: "Incredibly practical for urban driving, the Picanto's small size, light controls, and good visibility make it a breeze to park." The Suzuki Ignis has a high driving position, which provides good visibility for the driver, and the light steering helps to make parking straightforward. The Audi A3 is described as a "great practical option" that can be fitted with Park Assist. This helps the driver with both parallel and perpendicular parking. The Skoda Karoq is said to be a "fantastic all-rounder, mid-size SUV" which comes with rear parking sensors as standard. Some models may also offer park assist features that can help to steer into spaces. If you're looking for a seven-seater that's manageable to park, the 5008 is a great option. Higher trims offer a mix of all-around parking sensors, reversing cameras, and park assist.
