GOF cracks down on illegal sand mining, seizes equipment worth RM2mil
ALOR STAR: The General Operations Force (GOF) has detained 13 local men and seized machinery worth over RM2 million during raids on illegal sand mining sites in Kulim, Kuala Muda, and Bukit Selambau in Sungai Petani.
Northern Brigade PGA commander, Senior Assistant Commissioner Shahrum Hashim, said the operation was carried out yesterday by the intelligence branch of the Northern Brigade headquarters, along with the intelligence branches of battalions 1 and 2, in collaboration with the Kedah State Land and Mines Office (PTG).
He said they seized four excavators, six lorries, a bulldozer, a tractor, two sand suction units equipped with engines, and other equipment believed to have been used for illegal sand extraction from rivers.
"The estimated total value of the seizures in the three cases is over RM2 million.
"Preliminary interrogation revealed that the owner of the mining sites had been conducting these illegal activities for the past year and had been selling the sand in nearby markets for around RM400 per lorry.
"Further checks also revealed that the site owner did not possess a permit or licence from PTG Kedah to extract sand from the river," he said in a statement today.
The case is being investigated under Section 426 of the National Land Code 1965, which, upon conviction, carries a fine not exceeding RM500,000 or imprisonment of up to five years, or both.
"The Northern Brigade PGA is actively monitoring and patrolling areas in Perak, Penang, and Kedah to curb unlawful activities.
"In this regard, the public is urged to be the eyes and ears of the authorities by providing information on illegal activities," he added.

The court heard that while the son was in the kitchen Shahmar came from behind and hit him with wood on his shoulder, head and right leg. The victim's mother then tried to stop Shahmar who suddenly took a machete and threatened the victim with the weapon. Processing, sale of ketum juice: 4 arrested in Kota Belud

KOTA BELUD: Four men aged between 20 and 50 were arrested in separate raids across several villages in the district for suspected involvement in the processing and sale of ketum juice. Kota Belud District Police Chief Supt Shahrudin Mat Husain said a team from the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division of Kota Belud District Police Headquarters (IPD) conducted the raids from May 24 to June 5. Advertisement He said the arrests were made following intelligence gathering in Kampung Taun Gusi, Tampasuk 1, Kampung Suang Punggur, Kampung Pintasan and Kampung Ambong. 'The first arrest involved a man at a house in Kampung Pintasan at 11.30am, along with the seizure of eight bottles containing 1.5 litres of ketum juice. 'In the second raid at 3.25pm at a house in Kampung Taun Gusi, a man was arrested along with 24 bottles, each containing 1.5 litres of ketum juice,' he said. On June 5, a raid was conducted at a house in Kampung Ambong where another two men were arrested along with 10 bottles containing 1.5 litres of ketum juice. 'Further investigations revealed that the ketum juice was sold to customers at RM25 to RM30 per bottle,' he said. Briton's death: How did backpacker enter construction site, asks Lee
KUALA LUMPUR: The authorities must investigate how a 25-year-old British national managed to trespass onto a construction site before falling into an elevator shaft. Alliance for a Safe Community chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye questioned whether proper safety measures were in place, describing the incident as preventable. "The responsibility falls on the shoulders of the contractors and those managing the work site," he said. "Was there any signage at the site or a barricade? Were there any security personnel present? If they were on duty, they would not have allowed him to go through." He added that the company carrying out construction must conduct an internal investigation to prevent recurrence. Lee, who is also the former chairman of the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health, stressed that construction sites were legally required to have security measures in place to prevent trespassing. A construction work contractor is required to identify the perimeter of a construction site with a suitable sign and fence the area off under regulation 20(2) of the Occupational Safety and Health (Construction Work) (Design and Management) Regulations 2024. Anyone who violates the regulation may be liable to a fine not exceeding RM500,000 or imprisonment for a term not exceeding one year or both. On Thursday, the police confirmed that missing British backpacker Jordan Johnson-Doyle was found dead in an elevator shaft of a partially under-construction condominium in Bangsar here. A post-mortem showed that the cause of death was a chest injury due to a fall from height.
