Ukraine's SBU spy chief Lt Gen Vasyl Maliuk said the FSB agent plotted 'several options' including a sniper and a drone.

He said: 'The task was the physical elimination of President Zelensky at Rzeszow airport.
'Several options were considered. One of them was an FPV drone, the other was a sniper.'
Maliuk said the sleeper agent had been recruited through nostaliga for the collapsed USSR and "nurtured" over many years.
He was detained in a joint operation with
Poland
's Homeland Security Agency.

EVERYONE says they want peace, so why is the war still raging in Ukraine?
The short answer is simple: Peace means very different things to very different people.
They have different goals and different motives. Vladimir Putin wants total conquest.
And he wants to be remembered as a modern Tsar who restored Russia's imperial greatness.
Ukraine wants to survive, as a sovereign independent nation.
Europe wants a chastened Russia and peace that lasts beyond six months.
Trump just wants a deal — any deal at any price — with minerals thrown in for good measure.

I grew up during the cold war as it was known between the United States and Russia and there was always a fear that World War 3 could break out at any time. But do you know what, we didn't lie in bed worrying about it because it was something none of us could control and if there was to be a nuclear war, we naively hoped Ireland as a neutral country would be spared from total annihilation and destruction. As a people we had a view that if we mind our own business, no one will interfere in our business. if there were things wrong in the world we kept our mouths shut and stayed out of it rather than upsetting any of the two superpowers. Things then all changed with the fall of the Berlin Wall and this in turn led to the breakup of the old Soviet Union as we knew it. New democracies from the old communist east emerged, Poland, Hungry, the Czech Republic, Romania, Bulgaria, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Ukraine and of course old east Germany was reunited with the west of the country. The new look Europe looked a far more peaceful place and our good friends in Moscow had their own troubles trying to keep a bankrupt Russia together. We all breathed a sigh of relief that the threat of a nuclear holocaust had passed for now. But fast forward to this year and thanks to the Russian leader Vladimir Putin, along with his buddy in the White House, Donald Trump, the world is now a far more dangerous place. The Moscow dictator wants to reunite the old Soviet Bloc which is why he started the war in Ukraine in the first place. He also has his eyes set on the Baltic states and could try to invade them in the next couple of years with devastating consequences for Europe. Trump in turn hates Europe and more specifically the EU - he sees Europe united as a big trading block as a threat to the prosperity of America. He would prefer if countries did a Brexit like Britain, leave the EU, and just do their own thing. Trump's decision to bomb Iran over the weekend was no big surprise. The last thing the west and specifically the US, Israel and Europe want is for the Mad Mullahs of Iran to have their own nuclear weapon. This is not a normal regime. It is a country run by religious extremists who will use their 1 million strong army against their own people to stay in power. They had no problem executing almost 1,000 of them last year. Any critics of the regime and severely punished and their secret police have eyes and ears in every little corner of the country. They are threatening all sorts of revenge against the US and Israel but the harsh truth is they haven't got the firepower to do it. The Iranians have lost control of their own skies so every military base and every piece of military equipment they have is now a sitting duck. They can be picked up piece by piece. Their threat to stop oil tankers using the straits of Hormuz wouldn't last too long if the Americans sent a naval battle group to the area, to protect international shipping. I hate war and prefer diplomacy all day every day. I have seen far too many young people die in conflict zones over the years. I am no fan of Trump but he had little or no choice but to bomb the Iranians. He was damned if he did and damned if he didn't. The world has no idea what evidence there was that Iran had a nuke so but tell you what I wouldn't trust the Tehran regime with their finger on the nuke button and I'd say Trump felt the same. I am an eternal optimist and genuinely don't believe this incident will cause world war 3. Russia says it will give Iran a nuclear weapon to defend itself, but don't believe a word of it. The last thing Putin will do is upset Trump because the President has basically given him free reign to grab as much territory in Ukraine before serious peace talks eventually get under way. Putin is also running out of cash to finance his military machine and the Russian economy is now under serious pressure. Remember it was the Americans who claimed Iraq had chemical weapons after 9/11 and it later turned out to be nonsense. They financed a war with Iraq which led to the removal of Saddam and his execution. Trump won't seek regime change in Iran because it would drag America into a long protracted and costly war that he and the Republicans don't want. He wants his legacy to be as a peacemaker not a warmonger. Sending young men into battle on foreign shores would go against the grain for him and there would be no support in the US for it. What does all this mean for Ireland? The Government rightly kept its head down and didn't condemn the Americans for the Iran bombing .They know where their bread is buttered. It called for dialogue between all sides to resolve their dispute. Most of our EU partners don't care much for our neutrality. They will want to see us paying big pots of money into a European defence fund in the years ahead so the EU can defend us. At the moment we haven't the military numbers or weaponry to defend ourselves and are the laughing stock of the world. We are literally a sitting duck waiting to be invaded. If World War 3 ever does break out trust me neutrality won't save us. The Russians have already said they see us as part of Britain.

Trump urges ‘peace and harmony' as Iran hits US base in Qatar
Donald Trump has urged Iran to 'proceed to peace and harmony' after it fired missiles at a US base in Qatar in retaliation for America bombing its nuclear sites. Qatar's defence ministry said Iran launched seven missiles at the Al Udeid US airbase, with another 12 in a second wave, 11 of which were thwarted. Its interior ministry said some debris fell in residential areas, but no casualties were recorded. The US president thanked Iran for giving America notice prior to the missile attack which, he said, made it possible for no lives — both Qatari and American — to be lost. No casualties were recorded after the Iranian missile attack on Al Udeid air base in Qatar. File picture 'Perhaps Iran can now proceed to peace and harmony in the region, and I will enthusiastically encourage Israel to do the same,' he said in a social media post. In a later post, he added: 'Congratulations world, it's time for peace.' Iran had issued threats to retaliate against the US after bombers dropped 30,000lb bunker-busters on Iranian underground nuclear facilities at the weekend, joining Israel's air war against Tehran. Mr Trump mooted the possibility of the Iranian government being toppled. Iran, which had been warned by Washington not to retaliate had informed the US via two diplomatic channels hours ahead of the attack, as well as Qatari authorities, a senior regional source told Reuters. A number of gulf nations closed their air space for a time following the attack on Qatar but they opened again a number of hours later. New law based on Occupied Territories Bill Meanwhile, Tánaiste Simon Harris will bring the heads of what will be known as the Israeli Settlements Prohibition of Importation of Goods Bill 2025 to Cabinet on Tuesday. The Government legislation is based on a similar Occupied Territories Bill, but it will only include a ban on the trade of goods and not services. The Tánaiste said legal clarity is needed on whether or not it is possible to include services and that he has asked the attorney general to advise on this, however he does not want to see the bill delayed. He said: We will bring draft legislation because we are not waiting in Ireland, we are not waiting, the children of Gaza have waited far too long. Mr Harris was speaking while attending a meeting of foreign ministers in Brussels where the EU's trade agreement with Israel was discussed. The proposed legislation will make any import from the Occupied Palestinian Territory an offence under the Customs Act 2015, the main legislation dealing with all customs offences. The provisions of the Customs Act 2015 with respect to matters including powers of entry, inspection, search, arrest, seizure, and forfeiture of goods will apply to the importation of goods from Israeli settlements in the OPT. In practical terms therefore, the provisions of the bill will be enforced by customs officers. While foreign ministers did not on take action following the review of the EU-Israel Association Agreement, the matter will again be discussed when the Taoiseach attends an EU Council later this week. Micheál Martin said: 'There should be consequences in the context of the Israeli European Union Association Agreement and we will certainly be working with other like-minded countries at the European Union to seek movement on that.'

Starmer, Zelensky agree military production project
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced a new defence co-production initiative during a short visit by Mr Zelensky to London to discuss his country's defence against Russia. The two leaders announced the deal in the garden of Mr Starmer's Downing Street residence, where they also met Ukrainian troops being trained in Britain. "I'm really proud that this afternoon, we're able to announce an industrial military co-production agreement - the first of its kind so far as Ukraine and the UK are concerned - which will be a massive step forward now in the contribution that we can continue to make," Mr tarmer said. He did not provide further details on the agreement. Speaking alongside Mr Starmer, Mr Zelensky said it would help strengthen both nations and he thanked Britain for its support in the war against Russia. Mr Zelensky had earlier met Britain's King Charles at Windsor Castle where the two shook hands for cameras on what was their third meeting this year and the latest gesture of Charles' and Britain's support for Ukraine. The Ukrainian leader also met the speakers of both houses of parliament. The meeting comes as Russian drone and missile attacks in and around Kyiv overnight killed seven people, injured dozens, sparked fires in residential areas and damaged the entrance to a metro station bomb shelter, Ukrainian officials said. At least six people were killed in Kyiv's busy Shevchenkivskyi district where an entire section of a residential high-rise building was destroyed, Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv's military administration, said on the Telegram messaging app. Four children were among 25 people wounded in the attack, he added. "The Russians' style is unchanged - to hit where there may be people," Mr Tkachenko said. "Residential buildings, exits from shelters - this is the Russian style." Russia has stepped up drone and missile strikes on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities in recent weeks as talks to end the war, which began with Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022, yielded few results. Both sides deny targeting civilians, but thousands of civilians have been killed in the conflict - the vast majority of them Ukrainian. Interior minister Ihor Klymenko said people could still be under the rubble after the overnight attacks caused damage in six of the city's ten districts. "To be honest, it wasn't like I got scared. It was more like my life was frozen," said a 75-year-old local resident. "You're frozen, looking at all of it and thinking about how you will live." Ukraine's air force said it downed 339 of 352 drones and 15 of 16 missiles launched by Russia in the attack on four Ukrainian regions. Photos posted by Ukraine's State Emergency Service showed rescuers leading people to safety from buildings and structures on fire in the dark. An entrance to the metro station in Kyiv's Sviatoshynskyi district was also damaged, along with an adjacent bus stop, officials said. Kyiv's deep metro stations have been used throughout the war as some of the city's safest bomb shelters. Kyiv Polytechnic Institute said the attack damaged its sports complex, several academic buildings and four dormitories. In the broader Kyiv region that surrounds the Ukrainian capital, a 68-year-old woman was killed and at least eight people were injured, officials said. Russia launched one of its deadliest attacks on Kyiv last week, when hundreds of drones killed 28 people and injured more than 150.
