A community has been left heartbroken after the death of a 20-year-old man in a quadbike accident. Ethan Powell has been named locally as the 20-year-old quadbike driver from Brynmawr who died in the crash on the A465, which is being investigated as an alleged murder.
Tributes have been posted by Ethan's loved ones remembering him as "a one of a kind boy" and a "loving young man." A GoFundMe describing Ethan as a "special person" who "will be greatly missed" has already raised more than £1,500 in his memory to support his family.
The local community in Brynmawr and Crickhowell are organising balloon releases in memory of Ethan, who was found on the A465 between Rhymney and Dowlais next to an overturned quadbike in the early hours of Saturday, May 31. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Its organisers say the balloon releases will be an opportunity "to say goodbye to such an amazing person."
Two people from Merthyr have been arrested in connection with the crash. A 40-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder and driving whilst unfit through drink and driving whilst unfit through drugs and a 37-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of perverting the course of justice and assisting an offender. They have been bailed while police enquiries continue.
Tributes posted by Ethan's friends and family said he was tragically "taken too soon." In a Facebook post his friend Jake Williams said: "Can't believe I'm writing this. On Saturday I lost not only my best friend but my brother you were truly one of a kind my boy you were unbelievably funny I have so many stories on how dull and funny you were. You was take for us far to soon and you will always be my bother [sic]."

"Rest in peace my sweetheart, forever loved!"
Others online described Ethan as "such a kind boy" who "could light up a room with his character" while another said he was a "sweet lad who always had a smile on his face."

Any donation is greatly appreciated."
Since being set up on Sunday its target of raising £1,500 has already been reached. You can donate to the GoFundMe here. For our free daily briefing on the biggest issues facing the nation, sign up to the Wales Matters newsletter here
On Tuesday, Gwent Police issued a new appeal in their murder investigation into the crash. Officers found a burnt-out BMW in the Dowlais area during the investigation, which they still believe may have been involved in the collision.
They ask anyone who may have information on this car to contact them. Police are also urging for anyone who was travelling along the A465 between the hours of 2am and 5am on Saturday morning to check their dashcams.
A spokesperson for Gwent Police said: "Officers investigating a fatal road traffic collision on the A465 westbound between Rhymney and Dowlais on Saturday, May 31 are continuing their appeal for information.
"A Brynmawr man, 20, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene at around 4.50am after his quadbike was found overturned on the westbound carriageway. His family are aware and continue to receive support from specially trained officers.
"A Merthyr man, 40, was arrested on suspicion of murder and driving whilst unfit through drink and driving whilst unfit through drugs. A second man, 37 and from Merthyr also, was arrested on suspicion of perverting the course of justice and assisting an offender. Both were later released on conditional bail as enquiries continue.
Detective Chief Inspector for Gwent Police, Matthew Edwards, the senior investigating officer, said: "We're keen to speak to anyone who was travelling along the A465 between the hours of 2am and 5am on Saturday morning, especially motorists with dashcam, as they could have details that might assist our enquiries.

"It is still our view that a second vehicle – a white BMW that was found burnt out in the Dowlais area – may have been involved in the collision. If you have any information about this car, then please get in touch."
"Anyone with information that could assist our investigation is asked to call 101, contact us via our website or send us a direct message on social media, quoting log reference 2500171434. Sacked police officer says he is seen as ‘abuser' after ‘aggressive' arrest
Lorne Castle was dismissed by Dorset Police after an independent disciplinary tribunal found that he had committed gross misconduct in relation to the arrest of the youth in Bournemouth town centre on January 27 2024. The ex-police constable had admitted misconduct in relation to breaching the standards of professional behaviour relating to authority, respect and courtesy, conduct and use of force but denied gross misconduct. Following the hearing, a Dorset Police spokesman said that Mr Castle had acted 'inappropriately' as he detained the teenager after receiving reports of two assaults in the seaside town. The spokesman said: 'Pc Castle was seen to use unnecessary and inappropriate words towards the boy and place both his hands on his throat. 'The panel found that Pc Castle failed to act with self-control, did not treat the boy with courtesy or respect. 'His shouting, swearing, finger pointing, taking hold of the boy's face and throat and suggested use of leg restraints was not necessary, reasonable or proportionate.' A video clip of the incident, released by the force on Tuesday, shows the officer tackling the boy to the ground before taking hold of the teenager's face and throat while repeatedly swearing and shouting at him. The boy can be heard shouting and crying 'what have I done' and 'what did I do' before the officer shouts 'stop screaming like a little b****, do you understand that? Shut up'. The teenager also screams 'my f****** neck, get off me, I don't want you on me', while Mr Castle is on top of him. The officer later shouts 'stop resisting or I'm gonna smash you, do you understand?' and says the boy is being arrested on suspicion of assault. Speaking on LBC radio, Mr Castle said that the suspect, who had been wearing a mask, had been 'an unknown risk' and was found to be in possession of a knife during the arrest. The 46-year-old father-of-three said: 'If I'd have known on those circumstances that he had a knife that would have probably been a firearms incident. 'The real danger is the unknown. We knew he was potentially violent, but we didn't know how violent. 'Now, the risk for any police officer is the moment you go to detain someone, until you know you've got them safely detained.' He added that it was a 'scary situation' because he was on the ground with the offender with other people nearby. Mr Castle said he had received thousands of messages of support but felt that people were questioning his nature despite previously having '10 years of exemplary service' and having previously received a bravery award from the Humane Society. A GoFundMe page set up for Mr Castle by a retired police officer has so far raised £49,616. He said: 'I've got a phenomenal family and everyone knows that but people are asking that question now 'am I some sort of abuser?' because I attempted to arrest someone who was potentially violent, who resisted and my risk analysis was 100% correct.' In a statement Dorset Police Federation criticised Dorset Police's decision to release the footage, saying the force had done so 'without also providing context or balance'. The federation added: 'Our view is that the showing of selective clips of an officer's body worn video is not a useful or responsible way to properly inform the public about an incident – and only serves to entice the public into making judgments without having the benefit of all the facts. 'This is not fair or just. ' Dorset's Deputy Chief Constable Rachel Farrell said: 'We are sharing body worn video to address concerns about misinformation and to reassure the public that, while tackling crime in Dorset, our officers will continue to be proactive and robust – but by using their powers proportionately and with respect.'

'Extra manpower across the park' - your transfer window priorities
We asked for your views on what Livingston need to do in the transfer what some of you said:Ethan: For Livi to be competitive this season we need to get a holding midfielder that can play with the ball at his feet but isn't going to be a bombscare. I'd like to see Robbie Fraser or Macaulay Tait come back to Livi but that will never happen because I think they excelled too much when they played with us. In terms of sales, get Tete Yengi out the door as well as Daniel Finlayson, both not good enough for the top This squad is miles better than the one that was relegated. I think two full-backs would be wise. A left-back to replace Fraser, and a right-back assuming Jamie Brandon returns to the midfield with Tait departing. Some back-up at centre-back seems essential, but I'm hoping we don't revert to the low block straight Livi are going to need some extra manpower across the park to mitigate the impact of our loanees returning to their clubs of origin and an ageing squad. A striker with a ruthless edge is required, wing-backs on both sides and the departure of Michael Nottingham means we need more options in central defence. An attacking midfielder would also be nice, but we mustn't wish for too much!Del: Livi has the basis of a very good team, a bit of strengthening up, especially creative players for David Martindale to go out and win games.

Former Zambia president Edgar Lungu dies aged 68
Mr Lungu's daughter, Tasila Lungu-Mwansa, announced his death in a video posted on the official Facebook page of his political party, the Patriotic Front. She said he died in a hospital in South Africa after having been under 'medical supervision' in recent weeks. Ms Lungu-Mwansa did not give a cause of death. Mr Lungu became president in 2015 to complete the term of Michael Sata after he died in office. Mr Lungu was elected to a full presidential term in 2016, beating current president Hakainde Hichilema. Mr Lungu later lost to Mr Hichilema in the 2021 election. Mr Lungu had sought to challenge Mr Hichilema in next year's presidential election, but a court last year barred him from standing. The court ruled his time as president from 2015 to 2016 counted as a full term and said he had, therefore, served the maximum length of two terms. Mr Lungu alleged there was political interference in the court ruling. His wife and other family members have faced corruption allegations. Mr Lungu claimed last year that his movements were being monitored by police and he had effectively been placed under house arrest to restrict his return to politics. Police said it was standard to monitor former presidents for their safety.
