Nokia, Blackned to Develop Next-gen Tactical Networks for German Army

Asharq Al-Awsat2 days ago

Finland's Nokia and defense technology firm blackned, majority-owned by Rheinmetall, will jointly develop next-generation tactical networks for the German armed forces, the companies said on Wednesday.
The new mobile communication systems will be specifically "tailored" for Germany's defense requirements, Nokia said, with potential for adaptation to other countries' defense needs.
Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.
Nokia and blackned will bring together their 5G technology and software expertise to create tactical networks for battlefield operations, integrated with Rheinmetall's Battlesuite digital platform.
Tactical networks allow military personnel to share information, coordinate operations, and maintain situational awareness in the field, even in challenging environments where regular communication infrastructure is not available, Reuters reported.
The deal comes as the Finnish maker of telecoms gear, which also provides secure defense communications networks, seeks to benefit from growing military spending across Europe.

Allegri Returns to AC Milan as Head Coach

Massimiliano Allegri will return to AC Milan for a second stint as manager after the struggling Serie A club appointed him on Friday, a day after sacking Sergio Conceicao. Allegri will replace the Portuguese coach who came in mid-season to help them win the Italian Super Cup but the club ultimately failed to qualify for any European competition after a disappointing eighth-placed finish. According to Reuters, Milan did not mention the length of Allegri's contract. Their final game of the season, a 2-0 home win over Monza, was overshadowed by fan protests against the club ownership and hierarchy. Seven-times winners of the Champions League, Milan have not won the competition since their last triumph in the 2006-07 season while their last Scudetto came in the 2021-22 campaign. Allegri, who previously guided Milan to a Serie A title in the 2010-11 season, last managed Juventus. The Italian won five league titles and five Coppa Italia trophies with Juve in two separate stints while also guiding them to two Champions League finals.

Real Madrid sign Alexander-Arnold from Liverpool

MADRID: Real Madrid have signed defender Trent Alexander-Arnold from Liverpool on a deal until 2031, the Spanish giants said on Friday. The 26-year-old England international's contract at Anfield was drawing to an end but Madrid paid a fee to bring him in earlier so he can play in the Club World Cup. Right-back Alexander-Arnold, who has just won the Premier League title with Liverpool, came through the academy of his boyhood club and won the Champions League in 2019. He also won the Premier League in 2020 and 352 appearances for the club. The defender joins former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso at Real Madrid, with the Spaniard appointed as their new coach to replace Carlo Ancelotti. Alexander-Arnold's close connections to Liverpool meant that his announcement that he was leaving the club was viewed with disgust by some supporters and he was booed in the penultimate match of the season. But after club figures including former manager Jurgen Klopp and Mohamed Salah urged fans to remember the contribution he has made to Liverpool's success over the last six years, he was roundly cheered when he lifted the Premier League trophy at Anfield last Sunday. The defender joins a Real Madrid side which failed to win a major trophy this season. Alexander-Arnold has been criticized for his defensive concentration at times but brings supreme passing vision and attacking edge down the right flank. Real Madrid have struggled at right-back this season with Dani Carvajal recovering from a long-term knee injury and winger Lucas Vazquez enduring a torrid time there out of position. Alexander-Arnold could make his Real Madrid debut when they face Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal in their opening Club World Cup match on June 18 in Miami. Real Madrid have also signed Spanish center-back Dean Huijsen from Bournemouth as they look to bolster a back-line which was ravaged by injury this season.

EU says ‘fully invested' in Trump trade talks after US court ruling

The EU is 'fully invested' in reaching a deal with the United States to avoid sweeping tariffs, the bloc's trade chief said Friday, after US judges ruled the controversial measures were unconstitutional. 'Our time and effort fully invested, as delivering forward-looking solutions remains a top EU priority. Staying in permanent contact,' EU trade commissioner Maros Sefcovic said on X after a call Thursday with US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. Sefcovic did not comment on the court developments directly. On Wednesday, the US Court of International Trade barred most of the tariffs announced since President Donald Trump took office. However, an appeals court the following day preserved his sweeping import duties on China and other trading partners. The short-term relief will now allow the appeals process to proceed. Sefcovic has previously said he had calls with his US trade counterparts on Friday, Saturday, and Monday, as the two sides intensified talks following last week's tensions. US President Donald Trump had threatened last Friday—then postponed—to hit EU goods with major tariffs, voicing frustration that negotiations with the EU were 'going nowhere.'
