Saifuddin: Drug use down more than 10pc nationwide, Kelantan sees biggest drop after ‘jalan tikus' crackdown
PUTRAJAYA, May 13 — Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution today said that the number of drug users nationwide has dropped by approximately 10.5 per cent in the first quarter of this year compared to the previous period.
Speaking at a press conference after his ministry's monthly assembly here, he said the drop in the first quarter was largely driven by a decline in cases reported in Kelantan.
'This is closely linked to the fact that we have shut down illegal entry points, the 'jalan tikus', which were a major channel for drug entry. So it's highly correlated,' he said, referring to the uncharted border tracks.
'As you know, we launched an enforcement campaign and intensified awareness programmes because the data shows that four states near the border are the most affected,' he added, describing Kelantan, Pahang, Kedah and Perlis.
Saifuddin said the National Anti-Drugs Agency has since stepped up awareness and education programmes involving all stakeholders while strengthened border control to tackle the issue.

JOHOR BARU, June 12 — The Johor Customs Department has uncovered an international drug syndicate's tactic of using courier services to smuggle narcotics from Hong Kong to Malaysia, seizing nearly RM1 million worth of drugs. Johor Customs Department director Aminul Izmeer Mohd Sohaimi said the bust was made after enforcement officers inspected two suspicious parcels at a Pos Laju office here on April 23. 'An inspection of the parcels revealed a white bottle containing black liquid, which tested positive for morphine. The liquid weighed 10.194 kilogrammes and had an estimated street value of RM955,687,' he said at a press conference at Menara Kastam here today. Aminul Izmeer said investigations revealed the parcels had been sent from Hong Kong to a two-storey terrace house in Pulai, Johor. However, the owner of the house and the individuals involved are still under investigation. He added that the syndicate had disguised the drugs as candy and placed them in black liquid bottles to evade detection. 'This is a major success for the Johor Customs Department this year. We will continue to intensify inspections of suspicious parcels at all entry points, including courier centres,' he said. The case is being investigated under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for drug trafficking.

MACC chief: One or two suspects to be charged soon in Sabah mining scandal
KUALA LUMPUR, June 12 — Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki has confirmed that one or two individuals will soon be charged in court over the alleged mining scandal in Sabah. Speaking at a press conference after an MACC event, Azam said an official announcement would be made shortly on the individuals to be prosecuted. 'I will make an announcement very soon about the one or two individuals to be charged in court,' he said. Earlier on June 6, MACC sources revealed that investigation papers had been completed and submitted to the Attorney General's Chambers, with several individuals identified as potential suspects. The alleged scandal surfaced in 2024 after leaked videos showed purported discussions involving bribery and misconduct related to mineral exploration projects in Sabah, implicating several state assemblymen. Last month, MACC said it had finalised a forensic report on the controversial video clips. Azam had previously stated that initial versions of the videos were too heavily edited to be credible. In a separate update, Azam said investigations into the alleged misappropriation of sukuk funds for a Klang Valley highway project are expected to conclude in one to two months, citing the need for detailed document and financial analysis. The probe recently saw MACC officers record a six-hour statement from a corporate figure with a 'Tan Sri' title, with questioning ongoing at the individual's Kuala Lumpur residence.

Yusoff Rawther acquitted and discharged of drug trafficking, fake firearm charges
KUALA LUMPUR, June 12 — Former political aide Muhammed Yusoff Rawther was today acquitted and discharged by the High Court here of two charges involving drug trafficking and possession of a fake firearm without being called to enter his defence. Judge Datuk Muhammad Jamil Hussin ruled that the prosecution had failed to establish a prima facie case against the 32-year-old, according to a report published by Astro Awani today. Muhammed Yusoff was represented by lawyer Muhammad Rafique Rashid Ali, while Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohd Sabri Othman led the prosecution. The prosecution closed its case on April 28 after calling 13 witnesses during the trial, which began on April 7. Among those who testified were a narcotics investigation officer from the Dang Wangi District Police Headquarters and a chemist from the Chemistry Department of Malaysia. On September 12, 2024, Muhammed Yusoff was charged in the Magistrates' Court here with trafficking 305 grammes of cannabis in a vehicle in front of the Kuala Lumpur Police Contingent Headquarters surau at 10.15am on September 6, 2024. The charge was framed under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and punishable under Section 39B(2) of the same Act, which carries a mandatory sentence of life imprisonment and no fewer than 12 strokes of the cane, upon conviction. He was also charged under Section 36(1) of the Arms Act 1960 for possession of two imitation pistols by the roadside near a condominium along Jalan Bukit Kiara at about 9.25am the same day. The offence carries a maximum sentence of one year in prison or a fine of up to RM5,000, or both. On November 12, 2024, the Magistrates' Court allowed the drug trafficking case to be transferred to the High Court.
